There is another issue afoot. The back-up folder for 2013 will grow by as much as 1GB per client. If you are choosing to use the option for backing up to an additional location such as a flash drive or external drive, this can be a big problem. It can also cause a problem for hard drive space on the C drive of the computers whether the server, standalone or workstation. The program filled the C drive on my server at the firm to 95% from just under 40% originally, in just the 6 weeks I have been testing and working with the program. The Back-up folder was 90GB with just over 200 clients in my testing program. The problem is still inherent in the program. At my home office, I had the same issue and found the back-up folder for ATX2013 to also be the source. I have already reported this to the development team and today received a response. The problem has been solved and will be included in a future program update. I will also be contacted with a short term fix for this issue. Just as soon as tech support contacts me with a workaround, I will post it here. Till then, if you notice your system running slow, look at the amount of free space on the C drive. If the free space is not at least 10-15% of the total drive space, this may be part of the problem. When a drive gets below 10% free space, it's efficiency drops dramatically.

FIRST!! You must install an video card that supports TWO monitors. All the stuff you have been trying is useless until you do. Once you install the video card, you can then configure the two monitors.

If he is getting that error, he cannot boot to safe mode, or ANY mode.

Accuwage & Java download problems with IE11 and Win 7
Jack from Ohio replied to jklcpa's topic in General Chat
It is the website issue. I have gone to other websites with java applets installed with no issues. I am using IE11 -
That message indicates that the computer cannot read the boot sector on the hard drive. It is a very large symptom of hard drive failure. I hope you had all the important information backed up from the old dinosaur...

I will NOT talk to the banker. I despise dealing with juvenile minds. There is no "reasonable" explanation, and when we informed her in July, she has "acted diligently" to do NOTHING to correct the mistake. All your responses are reinforcing my original thoughts.

So all we have to do is file the 1120-S for 2013, include the 2553 and 8832 and "poof" she has S-Corp status for her Sole Proprietorship? How did I miss this shortcut??

Problem here is, she is not an entity of any kind. All she has done was establish an EIN and secure her business name on the IL government site. Nothing more.

I know this is a taxable event, but is the award taxable?

Accuwage & Java download problems with IE11 and Win 7
Jack from Ohio replied to jklcpa's topic in General Chat
What is your take on the Accuwage download issue? First of all, the downloaded file is only executable with Java. That is a website designer choice. Second of all, I have not heard that IE11 does not recognize the latest version of Java. I have opened many sites that use Java with no hitches. If my IE11 did not recognize it, it would not use it. I am sticking to the website needing to be fixed, or the download file to not require Java. -
She sells cosmetics.

She did have 2 other employees and she did pay herself. She is doing all the payroll on her own to save money. There is NO benefit for her to be an S-corp at her level of business profit. The business is her only source of income.

I know this is a taxable event, but is the award taxable?
Jack from Ohio replied to Pacun's topic in General Chat
Awards for pain and suffering are not taxed. If any of the award was to replace lost wages, that portion would be taxable. Editorial note... I must be less cautious the next time I go to and audit for a client.... -
941 payments were made to the EIN for her sole prop. I just had her tell me again... "...but my banker said..." It was very hard to be civil!!

Error: Failed to connect to an EFC server
Jack from Ohio replied to neilbrink's topic in General Chat
I do not e-file 1099s till third week of Feb. to allow time for errors to be corrected simply. Therefore, I have not tried transmitting. Give yourself time. I am not sure when ATX will start accepting them, or if there is date restriction for filing. -
Client is one of those that does not follow directions. She has a profitable, approx. $75K in 2012, Sole Proprietorship. A year ago, her banker told her she should "become an S-Corp" to save taxes. (we all know bankers are the oracle of tax wisdom) She insisted that was what she wanted to do. She lives in Illinois. Filed her business name with State of IL and thought she was now incorporated. This past July, we informed her of the steps necessary to become incorporated so we could file the S-Corp election. She did NOTHING. Now she is adamant that we can still get her S-Corp status for 2013. I have told her that there is no way at this point. She did not establish an LLC, nor did she establish a corporation. Is there something I don't know about, or do we need to give this client the heave-ho!! Just looking for some reassurance that I have not lost it!! (sarcastic replies to this line are expected!!)

How do you plan to handle the Jan 31 opening of E-file?
Jack from Ohio replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
Nope!! That is no longer the standard. MEF processes as they are received. The IRS stopped publishing a schedule, since it no longer applies. This year, even more scrutiny of processed files to find fraudulent and Identity Theft returns. This means longer refund times. I am telling clients 21-30 days or less. I am reinforcing the statement... "Don't call me about your refund status till at least 21 days after filing and you have checked on the status at 'Where's My Refund' on the IRS site." Remember when waiting 4-6 weeks was acceptable?? -

Jack from Ohio replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
At the firm, we are not e-filing before Feb. 5. At home, I am waiting till Feb. 7. Don't want any of our returns in the first two days flood. The IRS efile site always has huge issues that day. -
Importing 2012 returns from old computer to new
Jack from Ohio replied to RitaB's topic in General Chat
I promise that with my help, your IT guy will be able to do what you are asking. How many clients did you have in 2012? Here at the firm, we had 3,013 clients. I will now have a 100% rollover this season by making the necessary changes and taking a few extra steps. -
Importing 2012 returns from old computer to new
Jack from Ohio replied to RitaB's topic in General Chat
Rita, check your messages. I can help. Too complex to explain here. -
Whether you see it or not, the IRS has determined that replacement of the roof is a capital improvement and must be depreciated 27 1/2 years. The latest "clarification" makes that abundantly clear. When you replace the roof, you expense the unused depreciation on the old roof, then capitalize and depreciate the new one. The clarification leaves no room for doubt as to how the IRS treats it.

One more time... Forget all you knew about how the program interacts with computers from ALL previous years. Setup the computers as a network. One computer must be designated as server and the files will be stored there. The other computer is a workstation. The methods you are describing are a recipe for data loss and corruption, and the 2013 is NOT designed to operate that way.

March 24. Anything that comes in after that is automatically extended, a quick calculation to see if payment needs made with the extension, and they go in a separate queue. I charge for doing the extension. April 15 has been on the calendar for 50 years and the due date for filing taxes has not changed in decades.
