  1. I fail to see the purpose in paying 2013 ahead of the older balances. If the money from the grandparents is a fixed amount, pay the amount on the oldest balance. Then arrange a payment plan for the rest. Am I missing something?
  2. No other option. It is a much easier process now. Tests are just as difficult and there are only 3.
  3. No one will even look. If there is a state involved, they will not pay attention anyway. This has been my experience over the years.
  4. We do it because the IRS shares information with the States. The state tax departments are not smart enough to know the difference. We choose to be proactive instead of reactive. You will have the same issue if a client moves. WAY too much overthinking here!!!
  5. I wonder how the big box stores handle this?
  6. I used to question why I live in Ohio. Now there are at least 3 states I am glad I do not live in and the list grows every day.
  7. I use a base price plus. My base will increase $25 if it is only the one question with a yes answer. If it is more than the one question, it will be a minimum of $75 or more, depending upon how much time it takes me to get the information from the client. I will bill this additional as ACA additional costs. I want every taxpayer to know the source of this extra "tax" they are paying.
  8. We deal with this all the time. Send a non-resident form to the address on the Fed return. Been doing this for many years. YES, way overthinking.
  9. I am looking forward to a big influx of new clients this year, and lots of work when the notices come out a year from now.
  10. If the parents reside in a state with a state tax, why wouldn't you file the state return to begin with? Regardless of the address? Too much overthinking on this one.
  11. Like I said. The IRS does NOT care what mailing address is used. Too much thought into this already. It is ONLY the mailing address. Has everyone forgotten the simplicity of this answer? Michaelmars nailed it.
  12. Use the address of the son with POA. Don't overthink this.
  13. What then, was their purpose for divorcing?
  14. if the decedent passed in 2013, e-file would have been possible before yesterday, Nov. 21. IRS stopped accepting all personal e-files yesterday to begin preparing for next season. If the decedent passed in 2014, the 2013 return can only be paper filed.
  15. Just say no on the returns where the client does not want any bank products. I think everyone is getting two different things confused. There never has been a "per e-file" charge if you purchase MAX. No indication that there will be for 2014. Bank products are a different matter. I master form mark the decline box in the e-file information page. Problem solved.
  16. Same answer. Sale price is irrelevant for the gift tax return. Selling for $1 gives the recipient a basis of $1. If simply gifted, the recipient's basis is the same as the donor. Selling for $1 is a stupid urban myth attempt to avoid taxes.
  17. The lower of FMV or actual basis of the giver.
  18. Support has nothing to do with e-file. Two separate things. IRS will stop receiving all e-files on Nov. 21, 2014 from ALL transmitters. If you have not renewed, and have a technical problem or a program/tax problem, it appears that ATX has dumped us. So anyone who has to reinstall on a new computer, and does not renew for 2014 is SOL. I long for the days before CCH!!! ATX company people understood and practiced REAL customer service. I wonder if this support cutoff is new or if it was in previous years terms of agreement? Not pleased with the direction CCH is going these days.
  19. You must set the percentage of ownership for each member in the member information screens.
  20. The question was if ATX flows taxes paid to another state to the resident state return. That is the only question. The answer to the OP is NO. No more complex than that. ATX state returns do NOT flow tax from a non-resident or part-year-resident state to the resident state for credit. Never has, and I doubt it ever will.
  21. Sounds like an internet connection issue. I have sent 3 e-files today, no issues. Just received acks. No issues.
  22. How about just doubling the fees? You will quickly find out who values your professional skills and who is just looking for the cheapest.
  23. So far, no issues like that today. I think something was going on at the server level unrelated to your program. Just my gut feeling as I watched it be weird.
  24. It is totally erratic. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it don't. A couple of times, my reply posts did not post. This started happening out of the blue.
