You are correct. I missed the last year part. Filling out the 2210 may reduce it some, depending upon when the distribution took place.

If he received the money in the last quarter of the year, have him make the 4th quarter estimate for the amount of tax. Then fill out the 2nd page of Form 2210 when you do his 2014 return showing the income being received at the end of the year. It may reduce his underpayment penalty.

Once the preparer is aware of the facts and circumstances, he/she becomes liable if it is not reported correctly. I disagree with your premise. Those days are long gone.

Taxable, YES. Underage penalty NO, due to it being inherited. I hope he had enough withheld!!

I have a multi-state return. Client lives in Indiana and has both Indiana and Illinois returns. In order to claim taxes paid in IL against taxes in IN, IN Sch 6, line 5 states: "Credit for taxes paid to other states: Enclose other state's return." When creating the e-file, I get a pink warning saying: "IN SCH 6 Warning Please attach a copy of the other state's income tax return to the Indiana return." I created a .pdf of the IL return. When I tried to attach it to the IN return, there is no place to attach anything to IN as a .pdf. I just hung up on tech support because the lady was guessing and telling me that I did NOT need to attach it. (more about that later) This amounts to a tax credit for the client of $4,100, so this is not a small issue. Anyone have any ideas or experience? My next action will be to e-mail the development team at ATX that has come to know me so well!!! Anyone?

Not holding my breath!!! I will not have the new OS for at least a year to allow all the "gotta be the first on the block to have it" people can finish it for Microsoft.

First trip to either location each morning, and last trip home are commuting miles. NO BUSINESS DEDUCTION. Any other driving for his business with the vehicle will be deductible business miles. Don't overthink it.

Personal miles. Not deductible.

2004 and 2005 tax programs are not saving client files
Jack from Ohio replied to rwalter's topic in General Chat
Most computer users have no idea what that is or how to use it. It does NOT ALWAYS work. At the firm, I have one XP machine with 2004 and prior programs on it. It is part of the network and was only used for one return this past tax season. Too much messing around with the old programs on the new machines. -
If she wants the problem to be resolved, she will mail it. Otherwise, she gets to pay you a lot more to keep trying to correct this mess. As her tax professional, this is what you should suggest and almost insist. If she does not want to follow your guidance, either get a very large retainer for going forward or fire her. I grow weary of clients that do not take my experienced and researched advice to solve problems.

Mail it to the address in the instructions ONLY. Be sure the copies of her ID (Drivers License AND SS card) are expanded enough to be clearly legible. Don't overthink this. Previously, you posted that she has NOT had any ID theft issues? Fraudulent tax returns do not equal ID theft. So she would not check the box saying that she had. Don't overthink this.

Double Checking - VA funding fee not deductible in 2014?
Jack from Ohio replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
You are correct about the deduction ending on Dec. 31, 2013. However, this is one if the things that Congress may pass at the end of the year and make it retroactive to Jan 1, 2014. Stand by for more lunacy with tax deductions and credits for 2014!! -
Too much trouble!! My method is much simpler!!

Format that WD external drive. This will remove the trash program it installs. Then remove that program from your computer. Once you format it, you have a huge flash drive. Use Windows computer or server backup. I have formatted several of those when they are brand new. Their software is scat.

2004 and 2005 tax programs are not saving client files
Jack from Ohio replied to rwalter's topic in General Chat
Only back to 2005 successfully. A few possibilities of 2004 working on Win 7. 2003 or earlier will NOT work on Win 7. Are the programs stand alone or networked to a server? -
Message me. I can help you. Too complex for posting here.

Recreate and transmit again. Problem will go away. It is one of those glitches in 2012 that will never be fixed.
-
Save all as .pdf. Issue solved. IRS says we have to keep them 7 years. That is far beyond the statue of limitations for any actions by the IRS. I would save them based on the tax year of the return. No confusion if you go to look for them.

My date stamp with the word Received.
-
Edited my post to include the word - NOT
-
The key words are NOT REQUIRED! Anyone receiving interest can issue a 1098-INT. It is a good paper trail for both the recipient and the payer. Such ranting over minutia!!!

Still have problems opening 2013 ATX Software
Jack from Ohio replied to ETax847's topic in General Chat
Just click retry. This is a known issue by ATX and will not be fixed for 2013. The input part of the program is not talking to the server portion of the program. You do not have a computer issue at all. Just click retry as many times as it takes. -
"...I know I brought it to you. You must not have copied it..." Heard that already.

Create a pdf copy of the document mentioned by Max, attach to the return, and e-file.
