  1. I haven't counted but there is at least 7 or 8 posters on the ATX Board who have also received mystery collection letters just like yours. It is truly mind boggling, the level of incompetence at ATX to do something like this.

    MA Deadline

Emancipation Day which falls on April 17th is a Federal Holiday in the District of Columbia, which is the reason Federal Due Dates are Tuesday April 18th. Most states use the same due dates, don't know about MA.

    AirBnB

Think about it. If you're renting to someone for several days or even a week or two, you are providing cleaning services, clean towels and linens, clean dishes, glasses and kitchen utensils, heat, water, garbage, cable TV and Internet. If you are renting month by month, the renter pays for almost all of these things.

    AirBnB

I have a nephew who has 3 AirBnB rentals with an average rental of 3 to 4 days. Did his own return reporting on Schedule E Got hammered by the IRS was forced report on Schedule C.
  5. If we're going to be creative, then this would be the perfect time to file a 3115 and expense all of the undepreciated asset balances in the current year.
  6. There have quite a few posts on the ATX Board in the last several days about various problems similar to yours. Some posters have been billed for various mystery charges and been blocked from opening the program.
  7. I don't know what version of Windows you are using, but at the very least go to your system settings and turn off all of the power savings settings. On Windows 7 Pro, there is a high performance setting. The most important thing is to keep your hard disk spinning so that the ATX program doesn't lose contact with the various ATX servers set up on your system.
  8. I efiled a return about 3 hours ago and it went thru just fine. If this is an ATX issue - nothing you can do but call support. First I would redownload all the forms for this return and then refresh the apps and try again.
  9. I had one similar to this several years ago. See the examples in Pub 4681, it's my go to resource for stuff like this. It has lots of examples and is fairly well written.
  10. For the last 3 or 4 years, the ATX tax programs have had several chronic glitches: 1. While printing returns, the printer cache gets filled up with garbage generated by the ATX Program. 2. Your systems RAM gets gradually filled up with more garbage generated by the ATX Program. Leaving the program and coming back in will will partially deal with these problems. Leaving the program and rebooting your system will clear out all of the garbage.
  11. I agree, I have a husband/wife high income clients who have been in similar circumstances for years. Claiming home office results in paying more taxes due to deductions lost because of the 2 % misc threshold, complicated by itemized deduction phase out and by the AMT, which they are always in.
  12. It's no wonder, when presented with a fairly complicated tax return that 100 tax preparers will end up with a wide range of results.
  13. Does this meet the standard of temporary & indefinite ?
  14. Microsoft is releasing a major update for Win 10 on April 11th. If you don't want to wrestle with all the changes, turn off your automatic update setting until after tax season
  15. Is the daughter young enough to be a qualifying child, because with their income they probably aren't qualifying relatives.
  16. This client always owes, so I will skip it.
  17. I have one Calif personal tax return that I do every year. Do you need to have the taxpayer's Drivers License info in order to file ? If so, specifically what do you need, License #, Issue Date, Expiration Date ? Anything else ? Thanks,
  18. According to the ATX Blog, the IRS is still having intermittent transmission problems today.
  19. Rather than amending the return, use a 3115 to return to the correct methods. If any tax is due you get a 4 year forward spread.
  20. That's exactly what I did. B of A told me they don't send emails like that and then I forwarded the email to [email protected], so they can try to track it back to it's origin.
  21. This morning, I received a security alert from Bank of America regarding my credit card, which was a scam. When I logged into this site, I got a popup warning that this link was not secure ! How do you know what's secure or safe and what isn't ? Supposedly, 80 % of all internet traffic is now spam, phishing, hacks etc. If this continues, it could bring the the internet as we know it crashing down, because we won't know what to trust. We may end up retreating to fax machines and snail mail.
  22. When logging into the ATX Board, if the stop sign pictures pop up, don't click on the sign posts.
  23. Exactly the question I intended to ask !
  24. There lots of examples of temporary absences that are acceptable i.e., extended vacations etc. If she was a missionary on temporary assignment or working as a volunteer with a NGO or a visiting teacher would probably be acceptable. You should at least make a few inquiries.
  25. I don't work much with trusts and estates, but I do have general discussions about the issues. So once a trust becomes irrevocable, the assets held in the trust gets no stepup with the second death ?
