  1. I wish I could report differently but yes, there is an IRS early withdrawal penalty on Non-Qualified annuities. Too bad TP didn't wait a few months. As far as his withdrawing money in the future the contract probably limits (Ins co.)penalty free withdrawals to 10% of the original investment, subject to a maximum amount. I hope he didn't buy one with a long surrender period, like Catherine said, read the contract.
  2. It's my understanding that the RRB computer system like SS's is tied in with the IRS', that's probably how RRB picked up the 1099 before filing. Depending on Casey Jones' circumstances, ie. disability pension, early retirement, early age there is probably a reason why they will adjust retirement benefit for 2015 due to the income, possibly over a certain limit.
  3. My take from Cred65's post is that there will not be any artificial intelligence available for a reasonable (or totally correct) answer. Then again, why would we need to ask it, we have www.atxcommunity.com
  4. This is good advice, if you don't believe in ghosts. The first house I owned there was a SIDS death (found out years later). I swore I heard a baby crying at times, or maybe it was my old Mita printer groaning.. One other thing, finding a house that was over improved for the comps in the area would be a great find. You just have to know the market and look at a lot of houses.
  5. That would be my new strategy going forward. Buy a house all done, just try not to overpay, because the sellers always think they have gold. And not to look too excited when seeing something that just may be perfect.
  6. I showed this to my wife and she said it would be enough for her shoes.....maybe. Great suggestion though, I like the patio but I think the jacks in front are illegal, easy fix.
  7. Did you try stopping and re starting service from control panel > administrative tools > services? I've been doing this on a regular basis the last week on my desktop, laptop is fine. So unpredictable.
  8. It's the modern version of the Carousel of Progress (64/65 World's Fair and now Disney's Tomorrowland). Companies doing all they can to make a cheaper product, increase profits, market share, and stock price at the expense of people's jobs. I feel for all the future college graduates. So what do we do? If you have money you can invest some of it in these companies and receive the dividends for income, then if and when the market crashes use the rest of it to buy more, just like the big guys do (at the expense of the little guy). If you have no money you need to find a way to get some, hopefully legally by finding a field or building a business that a robot won't takeover. Maybe the lyrics by Zager and Evans "In the Year 2525" are not so far off.
  9. Too bad the student let the cat out of the bag because some other students might consider those "tips" a gift contribution for a starving artist. Student said they were tips so it's income for her. I would do line 21. At least you don't have to worry about this person ever underreporting tips when the real world job is brought to you, unfortunately everyone isn't this honest. Let me know when she gets a job, I need a new hairstylist, mine is never on time and her tattoos scare me.
  10. Herein lies the problem with most "just little" jobs whether it be a tax return or a home improvement job. Today, after last week I wired up an under the cabinet over the kitchen sink LED light, should last my lifetime. But the wire connecter that goes behind the fixture will not fit into the wall due to a 2x4 in the way. Tried Home Depot and Ace to get a smaller one, no luck. so I fabricated one out of two, hack sawing and filing to make it work. Wonderful, then the last step trying to screw it under the cabinet was impossible as the little screws are recessed and also impossible to set the screwdriver in the recessed hole. Two hours later after a lot of cursing (which I never do) I went to the nuclear option and drove two big screws into the fixture and under the cabinet. Didn't care that they popped a little bit of shelf in the back of the cabinet. I felt satisfaction. So the moral of this story is there is no such thing as a little job, it's always the last screw or nut that is impossible, or the tax return with that last piece of info that is so elusive, or the loan analysis I am currently working on for a client that was from her mother and is needed now for the estate with all the siblings calling me. Varying interest rates, payoffs, and dates all over the place. Yes, there is no easy job. Funny, I actually feel better now. This place is like therapy.
  11. I knew I could depend on everyone's support. This job started as a strip the wallpaper and paint, she said it would only take 2 days like they said on the show. Not my bathroom...so I come to find that the walk in shower water control was loose. Needed to open a wall to get in there and brace everything. Then she thought an efficient water flow toilet would be nice. That medicine chest you see should be recessed, I'll be fixing that. New fixtures on the vanity may as well be done as my new knee pads are getting broken in. It's like a new client who says, I don't have much, won't take long at all, not long at all. It'll be a week for this one, but at least I could say, she's appreciative, and that's a lot more than you get from many clients. Thank you all, you made me smile, makes me forget the back pain.
  12. Don't let your spouse watch those home improvement programs, you'll be sorry.
  13. I believe it would be based on box 1 wages, which is the shareholder's compensation, as I read the pub referring to in applying the percentage.
  14. You know, this is not a bad idea. I've had ProSeries PPR since the 2012 blowup and have kept it for my two complex returns that more than pay for the extra expense. I'm just a very cautious person, safety minded, and not willing to trust ATX 100% yet, there's still some problems, just ask Jack. As a side note, I just updated to 15.9 and my computer has been acting a little wacky since then.....not enough resources, and that little blue circle spinning on and on until I restart. I need to look away or it may hypnotize.
  15. He'll get his one day. Don't worry, what goes around, comes around.
  16. Yes, I do remember your telling us about this. This was probably a sizeable loss where the required casualty theft loss is so much more beneficial than a limited capital loss that the other preparer erroneously used. What a good feeling when the client calls in appreciation. Nice going, and kudos for the IRS, good to know there's somebody still there. We love good news!
  17. This creep probably tried to pass himself off as a minister years ago when it was the latest scam trying to evade taxes. I love that show, helps me to understand the stupidity that goes along with the greed. BTW, I stopped in your lovely town on the way to Lucy's museum. Beautiful country.
  18. Considering that the beneficiary is under age 70 1/2 there are 3 options available (sounds like an IRA or qualified annuity due to the amount of tax withheld). 1. Open an inherited IRA, Life Expectancy method. 2. Open an inherited IRA, 5 year method. 3. Lump Sum distribution. It appears beneficiary took option 3. Local podunk financial manager may be thinking about a spousal beneficiary.
  19. This was probably an IRA or qualified annuity. If it can be taken back there will be a more beneficial distribution option available.
  20. Not enough, speak a little louder, maybe they'll hear you (us). They fail their hearing exams with every new release.
  21. Very sorry for your loss. Depression is a very misunderstood disorder, I trust your family has the support and comfort needed at this tragic time.
  22. I use all the free editions of CCleaner, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. I run CC, then either Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpy at the end of my day, updating each daily. I also use McAfee. I've learned to do this on a regular basis after a laptop was infected and Dell needed to wipe everything out, started all over. Tech said this method is what he did, maybe overkill, but he mentioned Malewarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware may find something the other didn't.
  23. That's too funny! Sometimes I try to be helpful and give them the loose change to round it off to make it easy for them. So many times they can't figure out the change and think I'm a fast change artist. Once manager had to come over to help. Got to stop doing that, it's a time waster....for me.
  24. Last year I was in my favorite store and asked a 20 something for a pint of the Tuscan bean soup. She pointed to the board and said they only have 16 and 32 ounce sizes. First time I was at a loss for words. Don't want to discredit all our youth because there are many really bright kids out there, a testament to their parents and their teachers who really care. We don't thank teachers enough, they have a hard job these days.
