  1. Great work getting it under control Eric. Thanks! Whew! Now I don't need that second glass of wine, no wait, I need it to catch up on my post reading.
  2. We're on opposite schedules. If we were in business together we would have a 24 hour tax practice with large deductions for electricity.
  3. When in a similar situation as yours I filed a CA-6 (I hate that form), although according to MA's AP 605.1 it says to file form CA-6 to increase or decrease previously reported tax; or increase or decrease tax as per federal or state changes AND to make amendments that have no net effect on tax. So the way I read it, looks like it is only in federal or state change circumstances where no net effect is required as they didn't separate no net effect with a semi colon. Pretty bad when you have to dissect every punctuation point. What say Catherine? Always good to get an opinion from a native, I'm a transplant with a non native accent. I need some cawffee this morning.
  4. While I only do 2 of these a year, I did amend a 2014 without a problem. You can put the amount on line 11. In the instructions (I keep everything) it says "Include any tax credit from the previous year AND (their caps) any additional payments made for the filing year, including amount paid when requesting an extension." I don't remember attaching a note but with amended box checked I thought they could figure it out.
  5. Someday I just may find out as her brother and ex are also my clients. I'll report back in 3 years. I did warn her after our conversation to not commit tax fraud as she has a municipal job that could be in jeopardy if convicted. We'll see if she has a conscience. I'll have plenty of popcorn, homemade wine, Jello shots, and cough syrup at the ready as I don't think she heard me. Thank you everyone for confirming my decision to stay away. My description of this case isn't even the whole story. Building was gifted by her father to her before I took over 20 plus years ago. She unwisely over the years pillaged the building through mortgages and re finances not spending the money on the building (she does have an extensive shoe collection). I pride myself on keeping clients out of financial tangles, this is one of my greatest failures.
  6. The quiet of a Sunday afternoon was shattered when I receive a call from a longtime client, she knows I work everyday this time of the year. She sold a 4 family apartment building last May and received a 1099S for 1.05M. Basis left is about 68K, she never paid the estimated tax I calculated. After expenses, money went foolishly into buying a new personal residence and payoff of another family residence, all of it. The conversation begins with "I know you're conservative, but could you make this out so I pay no tax". I felt like I was talking to Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel), "you're an accountant, it's got count in it's name, move around a few decimal points". Of course I declined, so she said she will find someone else because she can get invoices for improvements, good luck on producing the cancelled checks. Was I ever relieved that I don't need to deal with this. Almost sorry I included the depreciation schedule in her package because I would love that call from her new accountant. Maybe it will be Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) because he is going to need that blue blanket. Come to think of it, the final scene of the movie took place in a prison.
  7. I came to this board in 2013 but rarely posted as I thought I was busy enough on the official board keeping up. I have recently found something here that is different, still the same knowledge and expertise but an informality that addresses all the other nuances of this business we are all thinking, experiencing, and wondering, can we be alone? Not here, this is like therapy for tax professionals, helping each other, the comedy, and the best part, the nice people....priceless! Thanks, Bill
  8. You were correct in your theory, they will be getting a form update out to fix the error you identified, but after the deadline. BTW, I'll never forget how you eased my concern when I thought I made a mistake on an EIC return. Had a tax nightmare seeing a $500 penalty. Yes, this is a great online office. Enjoy today, sounds like you'll be having a great day!
  9. Just saw that Kristin did the same, that should complete your having a good weekend.
  10. I recreated your scenario while watching the Big Bang Theory last night (thinking it would make me smarter) and I got the same result, could not get it back to 1 even after I deleted the record from worksheet A. Went to bed and I think it came to me in a dream "remove the spouse's DOB". Sure enough, that did it this morning. Thanks for the tax dream. Can't wait until after tax season so I could get back to dreaming about riding in a Corvette convertible touring the wine country in Napa Valley.
  11. My niece went to Syracuse, really great school, lots of team spirit too, she loved it.
  12. Thank you Rita, that would be great, a lot of laughs and probably won't get a lot of work done except you'll have extra help making your backyard garden look beautiful. I'll start stocking up now on Jello and Robitussin.
  13. Unless they're going to the Yankee game, watch out on I95, especially when they are on the way home!
  14. My strategy, I hammer them with emails and phone calls as I do my best to clean out the backlog that is waiting for a piece of information. It helps me to feel better seeing less in the racks. This time of the year it's all about you and me, transfer the stress from us to them. Don't you just love it when they think there is no rush because they owe or they have until 4/15. While I'm always nice as pie to them, I will let them know how inconvenient and un-productive it is for me to wait on them, and maybe they will realize how inconsiderate they have been, usually takes a few years.
  15. I see you've been to Brooklyn, don't make fun of the way I tawk.
  16. Do you also welcome former New Yorkers and Massachusetts-ites (Catherine, help me out here) to your beautiful tax-free state?
  17. And of course you're not offended by this, and are getting a good laugh out of it. I am.
  18. And she doesn't even know how nice you were, or appreciate not getting to see the backyard.
  19. I would like to add something I learned the hard way. On their wedding day someone should tell him this, 1. She is always right. 2. Give her whatever she wants. 3. If you have an argument refer back to #1. Happy wife, happy life. So far, it's worked for me, #25 this year.
  20. Exactly what I was doing. We're on to something here.
  21. So I check with my doctor the other day to find out what's ailing me. He said I had IT'SAD, Income Tax Season Affective Disorder. This malady was first recognized by Dr. Walter N. Cluer of the renowned ATX Institute or the Amsterdam Taxpreparers Xfile Institute in the Netherlands. Some of the indications are, Fear of missing something if you don't visit this board daily. Grief, when opening a tax package and seeing a crumpled, sticky, coffee and spaghetti sauce (or blood) stained documents. Headache, from breathing the odor of tax documents that smell like a pack of Marlboros. Sadness, when receiving a long fax with 50 pages of a year end brokerage statement with instructions. Anger, when realizing you are out of fax ink and machine keeps beeping. I'm sure many of you have other symptoms. I asked if there was a remedy and he said "No bunky, just therapy from a support group". I hope everyone here gets the help they need if they are affected, and it is good to know we have a great support group right here. Thanks to all, I feel better already. Don't let the April fools get you down, they all just realized what date is fast approaching.
  22. I have a signature from a 29 y/o that I could superimpose on my EKG, can't read either of them. At least both say she and I are still alive.
  23. Just recently had the screen freeze and grey out while working on an 8949. I think I remember it happening once before the update so can't be 100% the update had anything to do with it. Didn't lose anything, only time in restarting. I'm on a standalone. Update becomes mandatory for e filing any day now. Finished up about 10 returns after that with no issue.
  24. Why do they always do that? You had a good time with them, they take your number, say they are going to call, and you wait and wait.
  25. This brought and big smile to me, but then I realized it is very sad. Did they close all the schools?
