    form 8958

I am going to "allocate" all of his income and withholding solely to him and send it off with a prayer, a chant, and some incense. I figure, how bad can it be? It's not like it's $$$thou$and$ of $$ on that stupid 8283! TOWANDA!

    form 8958

I have been down so many rabbit holes this year, and don't want to go down another one. Maybe someone can tell me if I need to be concerned with the form 8958. MSF, he lives in NV (community property state) and she lives in VA (not community property state). Neither one itemizes. He has pension and SS only, in NV. She has $11k on a W2 in Va. This was supposed to be a simple return and the form 8958 is popping. I have read the instructions, and it appears that I need to file the form. HRB has not done this in the past, so I was wondering if it is something I really am not required to file. Anyone?
  3. Clean the rollers with alcohol on a q-tip, and use the canned air to spray the dust out of it, often. Just a tip to help it along. Make sure you aren't letting any humidity get to your paper, too. It works for me. My printer is 15 years old.
  4. Not much else infuriates my spirit like that comment from my clients. Not much else.
  5. I don't strive to be the cheapest, I strive to be the best! Although, I am very often the cheapest...
  6. I'm the red-headed step child using TW, and I LOVE this forum! Thanks, Rita, for inviting me!
  7. I start triage on Monday. Fast returns will be turned around, hopefully. Others are extended. For the last week, I have been telling clients it is likely they will get an extension, are they ok with that? And they have all said ok. I have over 50 in the bucket, untouched. Incoming this week will get extensions. But I do like to wrap them ALL up before the end of April.
  8. It used to be that we used the Simplified General Rule with every annuity. What about a client who has been collecting a death benefit annuity for over 20 years, and box 2 is "unknown." I have been taxing it all. Now, I see so many other 1099s taxable portion being reduced by Box 5 totals, and box 2 is filled in (taxable portion is reduced by box 5). I read on IRS site regarding box 5 and it does not say that the taxable portion is regularly reduced by this amount because that figure could be several things that would not necessarily reduce the taxable amount. Am I right to tax 100%, or should I have been reducing the taxable amount by box 5 all along? I'm sure it is fatigue that has me second guessing this. I just hate for the IRfrikkinS to get one penny more than they should.
  9. You were VERY nice not giving her a hug. Have you been hitting the cough syrup again?
  10. Military couple's home of record is VA. They live in NC. She usually doesn't have any income, but last year cashed in a retirement account. Is this income taxed in VA, her home of record? Regarding EARNED income... If she works in the future, will her earned income always be taxed in VA? No matter where she might earn it? FYI, she and her husband (military) are both from VA, so this is their home of record.
  11. There was a college here whose files were hacked, and I seem to have every frikkin' student in my database. I have never in my life seen so much ID theft. Adults and dependents alike. Then, it flips to a paper return, federal and state. What time sucking flat tires this causes! I feel like I'm being robbed every time I have to print and process another paper return. Rant over. Thanks. And now, back to your regularly scheduled program. cheers

    Extensions

I usually have a lot of new clients coming in at the last of the season. My established clients aren't afraid of an extension, aren't offended, so I extend the ones I can. If they are big returns, I absolutely extend after Mar 31. I have made errors in the past trying to make everyone happy. I've learned it is best if I am happy. So, I try to flip the new clients out quickly because if I WOW one new client, they will tell 5 people. If I make a mistake and tick off a client, they will tell 10. I also tell my clients that I want all my extensions done before May 1. I travel and I don't want this business to own me. I'll do about 500 this year, and with all these late clients, it's a struggle to stay happy some days. Most of them are waiting for the 1095 forms. Great, huh? I have about 100 coming in before deadline. No exaggeration. I have to say though, I do love my gig, and I LOVE my clients. If I didn't, I'd be outta here.
  13. This is a theory I had not considered. You are absolutely right. Wow. Thanks for that insight.
  14. My client moved back into the house that they rented to tenants while stationed in another state. They moved back in, the first of July. So, Mortgage Interest and RE tax would be split 50/50 between A and E. BUT, if I split them, the Sch A will not bite, and they lose some of the Int and RE tax. Is it legal to put it all on the Sch A so I can take the full deduction? Seems like a good strategy to me. And since they did indeed pay it all, I don't see why not.
  15. I won't upgrade. I can go to the bottom of the window and close it. Hover over it and right click, see if you can close it.
  16. That happened to me twice. Now I have a new MO. I hold every dependent return until the parent's return is accepted. Standard Operating Practice now. It will never happen to me again. Then, I have a jello shot. Right, Rita?
  17. try this: https://www.irs.gov/uac/Where-to-File-Paper-Tax-Returns-With-or-Without-a-Payment
  18. I don't think it will reject. My question is: Why are you not at your office today? It's March 24th!
  19. I don't think so. There wouldn't be NEARLY as much money to go around without fraud. The ones who can afford to go abroad will go whether they get a refund or not.
  20. One of these days, the IRS will catch on, that as long as income and withholding statements are not verified BEFORE issuing refunds, there will be fraud. I don't for the life of me, understand this "pay now, ask questions later" mentality of the government. Give employers until the end of January to file W2s, give the IRS until the end of Feb to verify them, and start filing returns in March. Can you imagine the fraud that would be put to bed if they did this simple thing?
  21. You yell at your clients right up front?
  22. Does he have a large refund? The IRS is holding my 5-digit refunds, it seems. Eventually, they will come. I just tell them that questioning it makes the IRS more suspicious, and they leave me alone...

    1099R Code 2

I don't know much, but I know I wouldn't have done that. My pension started when my ex turned 55 1/2 (QDRO) and I was only 54. Mine was code 2 and it was correct.
