I have several clients with adult disabled children, but this one takes the cake. -
Disabled adult son married, wife's parents to claim her

He can't get EIC if he doesn't claim himself as a dependent. It was super nice that one year when they allowed people over 65 to get EIC; this case would be a good example. (Maybe) -
This is so true and the recommended procedure. However, many of my clients don't have computers and/or printers; nor do they have the savvy to follow the directions to get the information. I just had a client a few days ago tell me that he could only get so far and it wouldn't let him continue. Of course, he was not doing something correctly, but this is going to cause havoc. I have clients who come in with the letter telling them what their new benefit will be, but don't have the SSA1099; nor do they have a clue what it is.

I just called one yesterday to ask if they had any investment income this year. She said, "Oh, that just came today. I didn't know that you needed it. She dropped it off, I finished the return and filed it. Today she texts me a picture of a K1 that she received today, but of course she didn't think that we needed it since they didn't draw any of that money out. It isn't going to change the outcome of their return, but I feel ethically bound to include this in their income to avoid repercussions.; so will amend. I told her to take her time getting it to me. I am busy.

They are already not answering their phone here in Wisconsin. SS applicants without computers are getting frantic. Oh, how simple life used to be.

Thank you, Judy. Another interesting tidbit. All of my six Grandchildren did have CGs.
-
Remember that this is reported on Form 8615 or can be attached to the parents' return. You have to report it because the IRS does not know the basis if it is reported on a 1099R. I just happen to have a Grandfather who gave six Grandchildren each 50 shares of valueable stock which they sold. I have the 1099's for all of the children and will be reporting the CGs for each child whether it is taxable or not.

This is extremely helpful information. Thanks Judy.

2024 1099-R distribution for a man that died in 2023

Sorry, I missed the 23. -
Or, it could be the operator. So far Max has worked flawlessly with my computer as long as I follow directions.

If there is no court-appointed representative and no surviving spouse a "person in charge of the decedent's [roperty" must file the tax return. If the return shows a refund, the person must verify on Form 1310 that the court has not and will not appoint a representative. Otherwise the Estate representative must file all required returns for the decedent. In this case, a MFJ return can be filed. (Quickfinders, Page 15-2) -
It is probably your anti-virus software. In my case, it was Avast.
-
This works as well. In my case, the culprit is Avast. My IT person went into Avast and turned off the files that were not allowing ATX to open. This now prevents me from having to turn off Avast every time that I want to log into ATX.
-
I got it three times yesterday. Close out ATX and close computer and restart. I think we reach a point of overload. We had IT with us all day yesterday and all of our computers are working fine and up to date.
-
True, but how many of them understand that or have a clue as to how to do it?
-
It's even worse when you tell them to print it to a PDF and attach it to an email. They are dazed and say "Huh?"
-
I think it is necessary. I have always used a different password for Payroll.
-
Make sure that you have a different password for Payroll than you use for the ATX 2024 tax program.

Isn't this the absolute truth? So many with the info on their phone and no printer. Then they want to send a screenshot, which we can't read. So tired of saying "Where is your this, this and this?" What a waste of time and energy. This year I am telling my assistant to add a surcharge. Either they will learn a lesson or pay the price.

I get mine from TangibleValues.com. They have several. Mine are non-binding window covers which I have used for many, many years. Special early bird deals, etc. I usually order 200 at a time.

Let's just say that we all do the same job with different methods. For instance, behold the desk of Elsi who is 101 and doing three returns a day. Her desk is an orderly mess. I don't even see a computer, so am assuming that she is still using a typewriter and carbon paper. Re: Judy's post regarding the age of tax preparers.
-
This is one of the most stimulating and impressive things that I have ever seen. One of my clients did tell me just the other day that I had to stay actively preparing her tax returns for another 20 years. Maybe?????
-
Nor, do I!!!! Give credit where credit is due.

I believe that you will have to add the rest of the 40% which were not fixed assets to the basis of the rental at 27.5 years. This trashing of rentals seems to be the rule rather than the exception the past few years. (Depending on the class of rental properties the client has.)
