The IRS began releasing via FOIA a database of PTIN information. Due to concerns by practitioners they stopped but now after making some changes to their system it appears they will begin again releasing the information under FOIA. In a e-newsletter for practitioners today, April 20th, they have the following item that sends you to a IRS page that explains how you can update your information and now use a PO Box etc. The IRS item is: 4. FOIA Awareness for PTIN Holders The Freedom of Information Act requires the IRS to release certain information about preparer tax identification number (PTIN) holders. The IRS has created guidance on what information is released and how a PTIN holder can update their contact information. End of item. Clicking on Guidance above should send you to the page explaining things. A friend just updated his information to use a PO Box and other than not remembering his user ID or password (which they sent to him after answering a couple of questions) the process was not that difficult. So if you have an office in the home and you might not want your home address released under FOIA to everyone, you might wish update things.

Sometimes that is the case, but in my experience it's more often the other way around.

Thank you all. Waiting now for the Doc to come and give us the go-no go decision. Expect it will be go. On a lighter note, this is a hilarious short video. Funny how people just have to press that button! http://www.tvkim.com/watch/1909/kims-picks-push-to-add-drama?utm_medium=nl&utm_source=notd&utm_content=2012-04-20-fifl&utm_campaign=s

Hopefully you will also find at least one small mistake he made. Often, when dealing with the same sort of situation I found that they had either left off something or entered something in the wrong place. Making it easy for me to point out their need for my help. The best thing about that they cheat themselves more often than they cheat the IRS, in my experience. Which makes them appreciate my value all the more..

We are scheduled to go home tomorrow afternoon !!! Pray that nothing bad happens to change this, please!

Sometimes the Windows settings are set to hide icons after they have not been used for a certain length of time. Could that be what happened? Clearly that would not be true of the current year program, but I'm not clear what years disappeared. Could just be gremlins, of course. This time of year the gremlins are especially bad.

I am in a panic - HELP _ kind of a legal question
kcjenkins replied to frazzled's topic in General Chat
The statement he signed should protect you just fine. Ignore her, and ignore the lawyer, who probably did not have the full story anyway, if he got his info from her !!!!! -
Either the IRS will accept it, [most likely] in which case the ack date is the ruling one and you are fine, or they will reject it and you will know that within the hour, and then can resend it with the right date. Either is ok.

Further update, yesterday afternoon he had the worst seizure of all, lasted over 2 min. Yet today he's feeling better than he's felt in at least a week. I'm getting emotionally punch-drunk. But hopeful just the same. Thanks to all of you for your support.

You are right, as UPE. I was just thinking of it being on the A. Clearly I am not getting enough sleep!

Thanks, Rita, I just played that for hubby, and he got a good laugh from it!

goes on Line 21, btw

Well, of course, you can generate a report as an excel spreadsheet from each tab, then combine the spreadsheets and you get two columns that let you quickly see if something is missing in either column.

OMG, Cat, you sure topped anything I've ever posted in Laugh of the Day. I have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. And boy did I need that today! Thanks so much. I hope everyone reads this one, 4/12 is a perfect day for a real belly laugh.

I had that problem a couple of years ago, and could not get it to get out of that loop. That's when I just decided not to bother with it. I was using this board primarily, any way. I've never missed it since.

Having the business reimburse them is better, because it lowers the net income of the business which is subject to SE taxes. Deducting it on their 1040 removes that benefit.

"And I just ate a bag of popcorn that was best by July 2010. " LOL

It's not double dipping. One is just an exception to a penalty, the other is a tax credit. It's totally OK.

Tell him he is about to lose his refund for 08, but that you have to have his payment of $XXX before you even look at it. And set that payment HIGH. And that, unless he does pay now, you want him to pick up his documents. Have a form ready for him to sign, acknowledging his receipt of his documents back. Then the ball is in his court. Why should you have to pay to send him his stuff, or fool with storing it?

You have to look at what his 'basis' is. If the funds in the original 401K were never taxed, his basis was zero. If he had after-tax contributions in it, those would be his basis. Let's say, for example, he put in $30K in after-tax contributions, which were matched partially by the employer, over the years at the job. So his basis was $30K when he moved it. So his GAIN is the difference between his basis and what he cashed out.. No loss to deduct. Now if he had after-tax contributions of more than $80K, he could deduct the loss, but that is highly unlikely, isn't it?

Well, it is day 22, and just as he seemed to be turning the corner and we could see daylight ahead, this morning he had another bad seizure. This makes the third, although this one was not quite as bad as the other two. I really do appreciate all your prayers, I think they make a real difference. I do read some of the posts, from time to time. Weird, but thinking about taxes is actually helpful to me, when I get busy worrying about him. Internet access is a bit slow here at the hospital, and I have to keep up with my farm work on Farm Town, you know! But that and the tax boards, and my Nook, help keep me sane and balanced. Without them and you wonderful friends, I'd be nuts by now!!!!!!!

I do not claim to know the answer definitively, [i.e. no cite] but my assumption would be that installation is part of the cost of any asset that requires installation. In other words, the "cost" is the cost to have the asset in working condition. That is true in any other type asset, so I would treat this the same.
