  1. If using the new simplified method, you should not include the 8829.
  2. Perhaps a sticky key? My 3 sometimes looks like 333, which if it's in the middle of a number, I can end up with with my ip code looking like 953368!
  3. Sure you can, as long as the hulu is just for your client's use! Perfectly OK to provide waiting clients with entertainment while they are in your office. No different than having a TV in your waiting room. You, after all, are way too busy to watch TV during tax season.

  5. From Rev. Proc. 2013-13 .08 Limitations. (1) Taxpayers using this safe harbor method to compute their deduction must continue to satisfy all requirements of § 280A for determining their eligibility to claim a deduction. For example, a taxpayer may claim a deduction for a business use described in § 280A©(1) for a portion of a residence only if that portion is exclusively used on a regular basis for business purposes. As a further example, a taxpayer who is an employee may deduct expenses attributable to a business use of a residence described in § 280A©(1) only if that use is for the convenience of the taxpayer’s employer. (2) The amount of the deduction computed using the safe harbor method provided by this revenue procedure cannot exceed the gross income derived from the qualified business use of the home for the taxable year reduced by the business deductions described in section 4.05 of this revenue procedure (deductions unrelated to the qualified business use of a home). Any amount in excess of this gross income limitation is disallowed and may not be carried over and claimed as a deduction in any other taxable year.
  6. Jack, the reason is that those forms are SUPPOSED TO BE MAILED IN ENVELOPES CLEARLY MARKED "TAX INFORMATION ENCLOSED", which makes for an easy target for someone stealing mail to obtain identity theft info. So blocking the numbers is intended to protect against that.

  8. Talking to the banker would serve no purpose. Besides, from her behaviour, I rather doubt her version of what she was told. Sure, he might have mentioned that she might be able to save some taxes by forming an S-corp. Everybody who reads the papers knows that people like John Edwards and Newt Gingrich used that method to avoid lots of taxes. That hardly makes him responsible for the client's stupidity or irresponsible decision not to consult a professional about it.
  9. Find myself suspecting that the Judge does not like the IRS very much!!!
  10. Agreed, Michael. In fairness, tho, while in Long Island, NY you can find such a company, in many parts of the country they are few and far between, and thus much more expensive. Also, lots of difference in a 60-80 unit building vs a single family rental house.
  11. Greatland has them for all different software programs, and will sell as few as 25, but Office Max 100 actually costs slightly less.
  12. giogis245, just to be totally clear, you have to have the 2012 program on the same machine as the 2013 program, before you can rollover the 2012 returns to the new program. You can not do it from the flash drive.

  14. It means the state return will not be transmitted until the fed is acked, which is a good thing. Means if the fed rejects, you fix it and recreate both and if/when the fed is good, the state will then be released to transmit to the state without any need to recreate the state file.

  16. Tell them the alternative is to not deduct the expense, and they will realize that 'doing the sub a favor' is too expensive. If you tell the client that you are required to answer a question ON THE TAX FORM that they have filed all required 1099's, and that answering it 'no' will FLAG their return, they will usually get you the info to file the 1099. At worst, you file the 1099 with REFUSED in the space for the SSN/EIN.
  17. You can set the DCN to start at any number, although the default starts at 1. So if using two separate machines to transmit, set the DCN on the second machine to start at 500, and you then can also know from just looking at the number which machine it was transmitted from. To set the DCN, on the second machine, click on Efile Manager, then on E-file, drop down to Modify DCN Series, and set it.
  18. Tabby is spot on about the real problem with the bogus IRS Announcement, IMHO. People who think that their return has 'been efiled' start expecting their refunds within a week or two at most, and the early filers especially so.
  19. Yes, hope he makes a fortune on this invention!
  20. Many software providers will let you transmit to them earlier, they then stockpile those until the 31st. And in fact the IRS is now advertising that Free efile started yesterday. http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Free-File-Opens-Today,-Offers-Free-Tax-Prep-and-E-filing
