  1. The zip code crash was a problem until I found out how to remedy that. I haven't had any issues in fixed assets but mine will randomly crash about once a day during the printing process. When this happens I can't re-open the software without first restarting the computer. Very frustrating.
  2. I had it happen several years ago and I simply paper filed the w-2 forms. Never heard anything from anyone so I guess it worked.
  3. Oops. You're right. Just saw the parenthetical. Can't help with that one. Sorry
  4. Look in the area where you enter your Preparer/ERO info. There should be a checkbox that says "print signature." Check that box and that should do the trick
  5. This fix appears to work once the program is closed and restarted after deleting the file.
  6. I have now discovered that if you don't click on okay when the box comes up and says the program has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close and instead click the red x in the top right corner that the program will not close and you can continue to work.
  7. That's how I worked around it too for now but the zip will have to be entered before returns can be e-filed. I guess a much dreaded call to tech support is in order. Arrghh!
  8. Every time I enter a zip code in the address header of the 1040 or on the W-2 worksheet my software crashes and shuts down. I hadn't noticed it before today but everything I have worked on up until now was rolled over from last year so I guess that's the reason I haven't noticed it before now. Anyone else experiencing this?

    NT-VACATION

We've done nice condos during peak season for as little as $80 bucks a night. You just have to look. Attractions are pricey and if you have kids you sometimes feel as if you should just walk down the street handing out $100 bills but the area has a lot to offer and if you're into nature there is plenty of hiking and the like to do for free. Tubing on the river is fun and inexpensive during the warmer months. We are actually heading that direction this weekend - looking forward to it!
  10. I think it may depend upon whether your activity is passive. It's a very confusing subject.
  11. Thanks, John. I appreciate the help and I agree.
  12. Had a fella call today. He was a part-year resident of NC and a part-year resident of KY. Moved to KY and got married in July. He and his wife are filing married filing separately and she is itemizing deductions. Wife has never lived in NC and has no NC income. My question is this - can husband use the NC standard deduction since the wife was never a NC resident? The data form on ATX says "check this box if filing status is married filing separately and spouse is itemizing on NC." My gal is not itemizing on NC because she's not required to file anything for NC. Thanks in advance. You guys are the best!
  13. Prayers for your mom and your whole family, Terry.
  14. I hate envelopes. It's like they think they are doing us some giant favor by leaving their stuff in the envelopes. Ugh! I say charge extra, shred them, and give them the pile of shredded envelopes with their tax info! Oh, and if they were unopened and you got the pleasure of opening them all, then I think that is worthy of still another added fee. And extra on top of that if you suffered a paper cut while doing the opening!
  15. Farmer actively engaged in the business of farming sells his farm, livestock and most of his equipment with gain of approximately $250,000 - He is not retiring from farming but moving to another farm he owns several counties away. Please tell me I am correct when I say that the gain from sale is NOT subject to the Net Investment Income Tax on form 8960.
  16. I have spoken with him again. It just keeps getting better. He now says they are technically married and have been for many years but that they have never lived together. The LLC was created for the sole purpose of buying, selling and holding the mortgage on this one property. There is no other property and no other income from any source. The property was not rented. All in all it looks like a pretty stupid move to me - they bought the house for $150K and signed a mortgage (him as managing member) and then sold it to someone else the same week for the same price. The only difference is the bank is charging the LLC 4.5% on an ARM and he is charging the purchaser 5.5% on a fixed rate mortgage. Just stupid in my opinion. This guy may not be the smartest cookie in the batch, plus when he came in today he was groaning and carrying on and finally said he was having terrible cramps and asked to use my bathroom. He is quickly elevating himself to least favorite client status! Kentucky doesn't require you to even list the names of members when you form an LLC - only an organizer and registered agent. The wife is listed as a member on the annual report which is filed with the secretary of state - and only the name and business address is required on that filing.
  17. New client came in yesterday. He formed an LLC with his ex-wife who is a citizen and resident of a foreign country. The LLC purchased a house and re-sold it in a seller financed transaction in 2016. The LLC hold a valid first mortgage against the property. According to my client his ex helped with the down-payment on the purchase of the house and was made a member only to protect her "investment." He is receiving all the income and paying all the expenses. I am at a loss. When I first learned of the multi-member LLC I thought, "okay. File a 1065 (they did not elect S-corp treatment) and pass income through to member." Then the more he talked, the more complicated it got. How do I go about filing a partnership return where one partner is foreign and has no ITIN and receives no income? It's too late in the game for this. I will definitely be putting this on extension (individual return - partnership is already late) but I still am unsure how to proceed. Thoughts and ideas are appreciated.
  18. I had a large attachment last year (nowhere near 14mb, though) and ATX would not let me e-file the return. I finally ended up e-filing the return and sending the brokerage statement in with 8453. As Jack said, I almost always get the warning about 4562 attachment being too large but I ignore it and t sends without problems.
  19. I have a couple who also happen to be friends who go to church with us. I have done their taxes for the last 5 years or so. In early February the wife left one Saturday morning to go visit her parents and texted her husband a "Dear John" note to the effect of "I don't want to do this anymore. I want a divorce." That was the last contact he has had with her except through her parents or the attorneys (I think she is a little mentally unstable but that's neither here nor there). They have two children and had not yet filed their 2016 tax return when the split occurred. It looks as though the divorce is going to be a very nasty affair. The husband told me that his attorney is going to try to get the judge to sign an order stating that they have to file a joint return for 2016 and split the refund accordingly. I asked him if he was sure she hadn't already filed and he has no idea. He has asked me to file an extension. Do I file an extension for both of them as MFJ or just for him as MFS? I have had no contact with the wife. I'm assuming she thinks that I will "get custody" of him in the divorce since he and his parents are still attending church with us and she has left.
  20. They should have received a 1099-SSA for the portion of the year the deceased spouse was living and drawing benefits. I've had several brought in to me this year for clients who have died. Are you perhaps dealing with a situation where the address changed after the death of the one spouse and SSA wasn't notified?
  21. I am so far behind I don't know when I will see the light of day. I've lost count of how many returns have been dropped off and are waiting. I'm up 25% from last year - and I was up 45% last year from the previous year. Local CPA firm was acquired by a larger company and decided to double and sometimes triple their fees. It's been good for business. This is the last year I will attempt it as a one-woman operation. Next year I will be hiring some administrative help. But, hey, maybe there won't be a next year since I just received a text saying my mobile number had been randomly selected and I have won $2,000,000!

    PEOPLE

I prepared a return last week - married couple with 5 kids. They are receiving a federal refund of $12k and a state refund of $60. He called today wanting to know how they came out. When I told him he said, "Why I am only getting back $60 on the state?" WTH, are you serious!?!
  23. I love the ones that don't realize you have caller I.D. who call and ask things like "where would you put the amount shown in such and such box on the the tax return?" or "could you tell me what it means if there is a number 1 in box 7 on my retirement form?" Come on, seriously.
