Please do not call me in 15 years and ask me if I think that you could be married. -

I'm pretty sure that if I wasn't sure if I was married or not, that I would have found out before 15 years went by. -

I advised her to find an attorney. This is something that I don't want to touch. I have no idea what other stuff might be involved. -
A potential new client (referral) called me last night. Her Mom died last year and she needed help with her 2013 taxes. I explained that I would have to put her on extension. She then goes on the tell me that she needs to tell me something that nobody knows. I don't know this woman from Adam, but she needs to confess to me. Do I think she is married if she went to Vegas and got married, but didn't file any papers in Nebraska. I told her that I am not an attorney, but that she needs to call Las Vegas and check. I asked her when they did this and it was in 1999. He died in 2013. Both of them filed taxes as single people all of these years. She called me tonight and told me that she has been married since 1999, because she called and checked. What the heck are people thinking? Apparently they believed that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. I'm pretty sure that she needs to talk to an attorney, since their taxes were all incorrect and who knows if she is responsible for any debts that he had when he died. I am going to have a piece of chocolate and my husband made me a filet for supper.

They loved the bowl of fortune cookies that I have out from my husband eating at Chinese restaurants. They aren't carrots, but maybe fortune cookies aren't as bad as tootsie rolls. I only keep things out for clients that I won't eat. -
Do you procrastinate on difficult or long returns?

One of my clients had her little boys say a prayer for me and I'll be darned if he didn't get it fixed within 30 minutes. I think that their prayers were more friendly and less tear filled than mine had been. I owe them lots of candy. -
I understand. I have had a lot of state returns that I have never prepared this year. I was happy to find that MS does not require a return with gambling winnings with state taxes withheld. They just keep the taxes. I have too many clients that gamble all over the country and then need a ton of state returns done. They are sorry when they win in Nevada or SD, since they don't get a credit from NE.

It appears that the second tech fixed my database problem. It took all afternoon between the two techs, but it was well worth it not to have to format my hard drive or get a new computer. He had to try multiple methods to get it to work again, but the last one did it. I have to go back and redo my preferences and resync the efiles, but that's a small price to pay. Now I just have to get my computer tech stopped from coming in the morning, since it apparently was not my computer. -
They are pretty straight forward. You put in the income and adjustments that pertain to Nebraska and it works out the percentages.

Thanks, Jack. I will call them back now. My other programs seem to be working. -
I closed a return and suddenly couldn't open anything. I rebooted my computer and still wouldn't open a return. Atx has been on my computer for 92 minutes and can't get a new database on. There have been hundreds of temp files building up in the database. He's blaming my computer. He says it is running slow for some reason. Stand alone, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, 12 Gb RAM. I could just cry. I probably will. He says I may have to reformat my computer and restore everything. Maybe I should just go buy another and just put atx on it. Oh but the database is messed up how can that work?

I'm pretty sure that I went to the master 1040EF form and checked the tadxpayer declines purchase of protection plan.

The title is "Just for smiles." Some of us appreciate a short break, but I knew from the title that it was not a tax posting.

Primary residence sold, qualifies for exclusion but ...

I am sorry for your loss, Karen. -
I got my annual call yesterday from a partner in a partnership wanting to know when it would be done. I told her that her that once again, her partner didn't get my the information in to to me until there were three drawers ahead of her. She said, why didn't you call me and tell me? I told her that she should be checking up on her partner, since she knows that this happens every year. I suggested once again that they go to a larger CPA firm so that this wouldn't happen. I am not going to kill myself because her husband's CPA is going to make them go on extension if they don't have the K1 by Wednesday at 12. I know that I am too cheap, that's why they don't move it to her husband's CPA.

That is the funniest thing that I've heard all day.

This was a new IRS reject. ATX says that the IRS is going to stop the error and that we should try to hold the returns until at least 6 PM tonight.

I agree. Nebraska estimate vouchers won't even fit in an envelope without being folded.

I wish that I didn't fell like I have to give them a deadline, but I've learned from the past that if I don't have a firm cutoff in advance, that they will push me to the very last minute and then still expect it done. For the most part, my extension clients will always be on extension, because they refuse to file in April. Since the season started so late last year, I had more extensions than ever.
-
My cutoff was 3/17. I put it in my letter and must have frightened my client's to death. Almost everything was in before that. I am still waiting on a few K-1s, but at least now I can work and know what I have to do.

I had a perfectly good client that is another client's daughter; then she married Mr. I know everything about taxes and how to deduct anything. Since they turned their old residence into a rental house, he declared that they have a business and that they can deduct their trips to Florida, Mexico, Wyoming and Missouri as investment expenses because they are "looking for rental properties".$4,096.76 for travel. They threw in a page from a website from some guy that wrote a book of deductions for landlords that says that you can deduct long distance travel for your rental activity, including meals, airfare, etc, "If you plan your trip carefully, you can even mix landlord business with pleasure and still take a deduction." It goes on to say that IRS auditors look at this and that they need to properly document their long distance travel. They are documented by receipts that they have written "rental search" on. So I printed off IRS pubs, etc. to show them that the travel would need to be capitalized if they ever found what they were looking for. I'm glad that they are trying to do research, but they are too cheap to even buy the guy's book. Maybe it would have been more explanatory than his website trying to suck them in. I'm sure that I will be in for a fight when they come to sign, but I'm prepared to show them the door. Her daycare is suddenly showing a large loss this year now that she is married. Lord knows what crap is in there that I don't see. Thanks for listening. I just want to get this one done and off of my desk.
