  1. Atx's website is down and apparently the servers are down, also.
  2. I put in my client letters this year that anything received after 3/15 might go on extension and anything after 3/25 was definie. I have been working like a dog and am still not caught up. Too many complications this year. Thank God I fired some last year or I would be in more trouble. I already changed my letter for next year and moved the date to 3/13.
  3. None, the federal energy credit doesn't apply to appliances. Try energystar.gov.
  4. I will be praying for both of you and your families.
  5. Excellent point on the capital gains rates. He read the brochure that the investment company sends out with the 1099s and thought that the treasury interest portion of his mutual fund shouldn't be subject to state tax. I really appreciate you taking to the time to respond. I learn a lot just reading your responses.
  6. Thanks so much! I thought that was correct, but they had me convinced that I was wrong.
  7. I hope that I have not been messing up for years, but do you go through all of the IRA withdrawal 1099-Rs and look for US govt interest and pull it off of the state returns? I don't see anyplace on the input form to split it out and I can't find anything in the state directions that refers to it at all. The client is sure that I need to go through and figure it out. Please be gentle if I'm wrong, because I am at the end of my rope this year. Thank you.
  8. Just received a call from client with CP2000 for a 2008QCD. Return definitiely shows QCD, but the letter is totally ignoring that and is charging them tax and penalty for nonfiling. The 1099R was reported correctly on the return. Has anyone else received this letter yet? I checked my other returns with QCD's and they are all showing the same method. I hope that I'm not going to receive letters for all of these. What a pain. Oh well, I told them that I'll take care of it after the 15th. Thanks! Bonnie
  9. I am still using them, but if no one is watching it, then it probably only helps the few of us that use it.
  10. I would file, because I don't know that the IRS pays much attention to the taxable box. If you don't, it will probably generate a CP-2000 down the line.
  11. Brent, I wish that I could help you, but it is not happening to me. I am still using XP and am not on a network. I hope that someone else can help you. Bonnie
  12. He is a really cute puppy. I haven't had a dog since I got married, but we have a cat who thinks he is a dog. He thinks that every time the doorbell rings, it's for him and comes running. Enjoy!
  13. I just had to replace a video card last week and it started out as the monitor acting screwy.
  14. I will feel better, when I don't have to get up at 6 every morning to get my son up and drive him to school. He will be able to drive soon, but I will still probably have to wake him up, because he can sleep through anything and unless I move him out of the house, I will hear the alarm before he does. (I know he is spoiled and I'm an enabler.) I just hate working until 12 or 1 and then can't wind down to sleep and then getting up early, but I'm an owl and have always hated mornings. Hubby gets up at 4:30 for work. I don't know how he stands it. Bonnie
  15. I love to see how other people mangage their practices. I am so down already this season that it takes everything I've got to drag in here. I need to learn to say no and stick with it. I've been trying for four years to not accept new work, and every year clients send me their kids, parents, or they start new business and don't understand that I can't keep taking on more work and still get finished. Oh well, back to work. I am going to use some of these ideas. Thanks! Bonnie
  16. Terry, I definitely agree with you. He had no other income while he was alive, so it shouldn't be taxable. They were living off of deceased wife's life insurance. He was finally awarded the SS and then died before he received it. I am showing it as non taxable on both returns. It was received in his SS#. It would end up being taxable on the 1041, because there was a 401K found from his deceased spouse that is now taxable to the estate and would then make the social security taxable. It is a very sad mess. Thanks for your answers.
  17. Lump sum social security disability for 08 and 09 was received 13 days after taxpayer died. It wouldn't have been taxable if he had lived, because he didn't have other income. Do I have to report the entire amount as income on the 1041 or part of it? I have read Pub 559 and the 1041 instructions and don't see anything, except that income is treated as the person was alive. He has minor children (his wife died three years ago) and I don't want to make them pay more taxes than necessary. Thanks!
  18. We have had so much snow this winter in Omaha that the kids have had six snow days already. It's very unusual in the city. I can't imagine how many the small towns have missed. It is snowing again today. Our inflatable Christmas decorations have been buried for ages. I finally quit going and digging them out every day. I haven't seen this much snow since the 70's and I enjoyed it a lot more then. We have a huge eight foot high pile of snow at the end of our driveway that will probably be there until at least April. I swear I'm retiring to Florida. Bonnie
  19. If you didn't give him copies before of his personal property tax return and depreciation schedules, you need to give them to him now, whether he has paid you or not for current work. You should always provide a copy of the returns to the taxpayer. If he already has copies, you are not required to provide him with another copy, unless he pays you. Your files are yours. You could have block his number so that he can't call you anymore when this is through. If he continues to harrass you, I would call the police. Bonnie
  20. It has always taken a long time to receive ACKs on 1099s. I don't worry about it unless it's toward the end of February.
  21. You crack me up. I needed a laugh. In response to Ralph's question, I went through an audit several years ago on real estate professional and even with five commercial properties, it was a very hard sell. My client was retired with no other source of income. Make sure that your client keeps a log of hours and mileage to prove that he had the hours in. You never know when your client will get picked for an audit and he had better be able to back up his return.
  22. I have had to reboot my computer several times, because it takes so long to open and when I check the status, it doesn't appear to be doing anything. I don't know if it is really frozen or if it is thinking alot. I have some more memory to install in my computer, when I find the time. Maybe that will help. Bonnie
  23. I don't normally buy extended warranties, but I do buy them on computers that I use for work. I've used my Dell premium warranty to get a hard drive and a motherboard replaced in 24 hours during tax season. Bonnie
  24. Good to see you back, JB. At least you have your 1040 express answers. I don't have mine yet in Nebraska. Bonnie
  25. No, this happened before the audit began. I didn't have a POA until the middle of the audit when I took over for the client. Then I had to keep telling the client to quit calling the agent.
