The Tax Book lives on my desk... and I keep a couple of back years' versions, as well - for those late or non-filers. Answers those "what WERE the rules on this two years ago?" questions. The state book I only replace every three years or so; just not enough changes (that I see). Good CPE, too, at good prices.

I have absolutely NO interest in cloud-based software of almost any kind. If tax software becomes only cloud-based, I will retire and go back to doing my own returns by hand.

Form 3921 Exercise of an Incentive Stock Option
Catherine replied to Lion EA's topic in General Chat
Here they are. Eric, is there a way to delete our old attachments? I was able to delete some that were no longer linked with posts but for most I could find no way to get rid of them. Form 3921 pg1.pdf Form 3921 pg2.pdf -
Form 3921 Exercise of an Incentive Stock Option
Catherine replied to Lion EA's topic in General Chat
Let's see if I can post these two pages. There are also detail pages of transactions I didn't scan. These are my quick-reference pages for options. ISO's also can lead to "phantom income" for AMT purposes if bought and NOT sold in the same year. There's a great book called "Consider Your Options" by K A Thomas that goes into great and gory detail about all kinds of options, that I use for greater-detail reference. That's why I wasn't going to post it all here; there are entire chapters of stuff and I was going to talk Lion through the pieces she needed. OK; I have too many files and can't upload these pages. Will post this, delete some stuff that's been saved here, and come back to add the 2 pages. Catherine -

Like I told Lion, it's a bunch of stuff. Will try to scan and post here tomorrow. Sorry; wasn't trying to hold out on anyone! -

Hey, look at that; a keyboard with integral real-time printer! (Yes, my inner nerd is showing; I know.)

client won and immediately sold boat at loss
Catherine replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
There is some boat equivalent for Kelly Blue Book - heck, there are ads run by boat sellers. It should not be too difficult to establish a reasonable and verifiable FMV for the boat. -
Ultimately they are going to drive us back to pen and paper. Erasable pen!

Jack is right that no conversion is seamless -- but if done carefully, no conversion need be a tear-your-hair-out nightmare, either. Read the instructions carefully, back everything up (maybe more than once in more than one location), try a test case that's easy, try a test case that's complex. If those look good, go for it! But definitely check everything afterwards. When I converted to Drake I had several assets that had small errors. less than one afternoon took care of the whole of it, though. from start to finish.

Elderly couple in northern Maine looking for someone really good to help them. SFR's, past-due returns, amended returns - not clear what exactly is needed. Both are competent but he has always been careless and she has always let him handle all the "tax stuff." Adult daughter has durable POA for finance, so there is help/backup. It looks to her as though they filed incomplete returns and left off huge deductions (property tax, charity, medical) and have huge amounts "owed" to the IRS that are not really owed. State of Maine in similar mess. Payment of preparer fees NOT an issue. Anyone want to bite? Or know someone? Please send me info by private message. Parents of a relative-by-marriage but close enough that the elderly couple is NOT comfortable with me being directly involved. Thanks!

Same as depositing from your computer; take a picture and send it in. HOWEVER -- most phones do NOT have the security on a desktop so I don't recommend this practice.

Nah; bookkeepers and accountants will be among the LAST jobs to go away.

My sympathies to your friend! I concur with rfassett: the estate has the obligation to pay debts, NOT the family/heirs. However, they *will* in all likelihood be pressured to do so.

I have several corporate returns in the works, with HUGE holes in the info needed (Form 3115 info for one, one client can't find details on a $2k+ asset purchase that is NOT in QB that I suspect is either 2015 or she used a personal card by accident, etc.). And I'll be at the NATP conference from tomorrow through Saturday. Argh! I will see Independence Hall and take my cross-stitch project with me for the train. Breathe. It's OK. I hope.

Ah, but where is the authority for the BANKS to give money to an entity NOT named on the check? If this is so, they have written themselves authority to steal at will. It needs to be repealed/overturned/stopped. If someone sends a check to the wrong agency, they'll just be stuck with late payment penalties and interest.

Then there is no other option than to jump off a bridge... Actually, I think it works the same except if the annuity has been annuitized you *have* to take the annual distribution amount they give, and make up any deficit with the other.

I should raise my rates... sometimes I think I'd make more money running a retail cash register, with less aggravation.

I have seen this several times. Shame on the bank that took the check and the one that honored the check.

When a client comes in one year obviously pregnant, and the next year with a six-month-old in a car seat carrier, I feel justified in not asking for the birth certificate. DOB and ssn, yes.

Because there are FAR too many social workers who cannot add 2 + 2 and come up with 4? Or - being used to gaming the system to get services - will tell folks who "really need the money" to finagle the numbers to come up with big refunds, not realizing (or caring, perhaps) that it is tax fraud?

I thought Medi-Share was specifically excluded from the ACA. Which says nothing useful about your question, unfortunately.
