  1. Whose last words were, "I just drank WHAT?!?!"
  2. That was just a baby reply to the side issue of Daylight Saving Time.
  3. Oh, Rita L -- my most sincere sympathies on your computer problems!!!! Mine are nothing by comparison -- a several-year-old Dell with a slowly failing keyboard. Shift key stops letters from coming up at all, space bar is flaky, and m's and n's don't always show up. A client loaned me another keyboard but I'm too far behind to try installing it; easier and maybe faster to keep fixing and fixing all the drop-out letters and lack of capitals. Good for you, though, for sitting shiva with your daughter-in-law; some things are just more important than tax forms. Sympathies to everyone else who is having issues with computers and health. As for me, on Wednesday I re-tweaked (sprained) my left hip and have been in reasonably bad pain ever since (couldn't get out of bed Thursday morning without help). I've still been _very_ lucky, as today it's down to a nasty ache and I'm trying to wean myself off the high-dose motrin I've been glugging since Wednesday noon. Have been alternating working sitting down until it hurts too much, then working standing up until my wrists give way, and getting headaches from the weird angles with the monitors. More glitches than usual this year, too -- I've used Gruntworx in the past very successfully but this year it hasn't been indexing my pdf's properly (same scanner as last year so it's not the scanner). It did such a BAD job getting three accounts of stock trades into Excel that I re-scanned those three accounts at a higher dpi level and re-submitted -- and it left off ONE ENTIRE ACCOUNT's worth of data. So I have to call them on Monday and bitch them out. Every time this year that I feel like maybe I have a handle on the work flow, it spirals out of control again. It's been just horrid. For next year I hire help. In November, so I can get him/her trained by January. Catherine
  4. Quoting our favorite, Lazarus Long, again: "When a place gets crowded enough to require ID’s, social collapse is not far away. It is time to go elsewhere. The best thing about space travel is that it made it possible to go elsewhere."
  5. We have a friend who goes ballistic over Daylight Saving Time and eventually he decided to set his watch to the Universal Time signal and just subtracts hours as needed depending on the date. While he's more than a little carried away, he is also extremely intelligent and incredibly well-read, and it's fun to listen to him always. But he points out that Daylight Saving Time (NO "s" at the end of saving, BTW) was intended to save energy during the war. It has been amply demonstrated that instead of saving energy, it costs energy. So we should abolish it just on that fact alone. Plus, WE don't get gipped an hour of sleep during tax season!
  6. I'll reply to this thread after 4/19, when I have time to do it a little bit of justice.
  7. Anything you subsidize, you get more of.
  8. Torvill & Dean; always the best Hat Trick
  9. Chill, please. Lots of folks post lots of stuff that isn't useful. Jokes. Responses to jokes. Boasting about our kids. Griping about other members. If we banned people for "no contribution of useful information" there'd be no one left. If you can't stand someone else's presence here, either IGNORE them, or go sulk in a corner on your own. I didn't put up with this kind of nonsense from my girls when they were little, and it's even less appealing from a supposedly mature adult. Don't we all have enough REAL issues to deal with this time of year (any time of year)? So, OldJack and Bees Knees and anyone else with a chip on their shoulder -- get a grip. Please.
  10. I have a student who needs to file an Indiana non-resident return -- which means paper filing. ATX is telling me A) that I need to add an IN-BAR form as the last page of the return, and that the IN-BAR form is not approved for paper filing. Can someone shed some light on this, please? TIA, Catherine
  11. ‎"Give me all your money or you're geography!!" "Don't you mean... or you're history?" "Don't try to change the subject!!"
  12. Since the Code V amount is the _difference_ between FMV and what was paid, it essentially brings basis -up to FMV-. Look up the stock price on the date of exercise at one of the historic stock price sites, and use that. Document your sources (copies of the W-2 with Code V amount, screen shot of historic price, any documentation from employer). It's defensible and I think meets the "reasonable" standards.
  13. Moon rise about 6PM on the east coast for Saturday.
  14. I used to make all my own clothes (back when there was no such thing as the "petite" section in the stores). I still do lots of mending and alterations and make things when I can, or help my girls with their projects. I have a few cross-stitch projects floating around, half-done. I knit and crochet but am better at teaching those things than completing projects on my own. I have re-upholstered chairs (including a channel-back wing chair that my grandparents bought in 1926 -- I finished it the day before Gwen was born (and she turned 18 yesterday)). I have a lovely small collection of sewing machines (including a treadle machine). I garden (and can some of what I grow), I bicycle, I play fiddle, in the winter I shoot in a pistol league and in the spring I shoot in a rifle league. Used to do martial arts, too (Wah Lum style kung fu, 15 years) but gave that up a few years ago. And for the last year I've been running a monthly US Constitution study group. I keep myself kinda busy, I guess.
  15. Me, too -- half Italian and half Irish. I tell people "quick temper, holds grudges"! (Well, only the first is true - but it makes folks laugh. And then try to surreptitiously edge away without me noticing.... )
  16. Happy St. Patrick's Day to all -- and Gwen turns 18 years old today!! Catherine
  17. I have to use an IE tab in Firefox or I can't get through. The only thing I use IE for is Windows update stuff. It's got security flaws in it big enough to drive a truck through.
  18. I had a couple pieces of garlic ciabatta with some extra sharp Cabot cheddar cheese, and a cup of tea. It wasn't enough and I really need to get some lunch stuff in here. I'm hungry for dinner already!
  19. Janitor Bob -- you've sure earned your forum moniker today! Hope that "good ole Jeb" pays for the mess he made and goes elsewhere next year. Here -- give him the brick wall to knock some sense into his head!
  20. I see a Constitutional battle brewing founded in Amendments 9 & 10.
  21. Honest. A real, honest-to-goodness turkey. HUGE bird; it circled the house in a lazy meander, looking for munchies at the garden edges. I got a couple of pictures and the kids next door said it chased them. It has now wandered off, but it was a terrific break to a day that has otherwise been crazed, irritating, and not very productive (hence the previous two descriptors). Will post pictures later when I have time. (Maybe in May, at this rate!!)
  22. I posted on the "other" ATX forum and got nothing. I should have looked here first!! I'll have to uninstall Adobe X and go back to version 9-point-something. PLUS change my settings so it doesn't automatically upgrade itself!!
  23. We live but to serve. We serve to live. We serve liver. With onions. One of those --> or something like that, Terry D!
  24. I found him on a different forum and asked Eric to add him to our list. I could only get a static version -- perhaps he has the magic answer for you! All I can say is that Eric is terrific.
