  1. If he's incorporated - yes. And they won't like that answer. Technically, if they have not filed for exempt status with IRS, they are not exempt and must file tax-paying return. I had one of these a few year ago, but income was very low and I convinced them to get the exemption status going so we could at least call it "applied for".
  2. I think this is a case of what I want vs. what I know........... Boys (now in their 20's) live in their mom and dad's old house. M&D have moved. 1 of the boys is fully disabled and requires home care. M&D fully support him financially. (and social security.) M&D own house, pay taxes and utilities on house. Older brother lives with him and works part time making about $11000 in 2015. I believe the disabled son is still a dependent of M&D. I would like brother to also be dependent of M&D, but I think he has to file on his own. But I wanted to post this in case anyone had any other thoughts on it.
  3. I'm glad you shared that. I visit some of our local schools each year and speak to either the business/acctg students or the economic students. I tell them a little about different jobs and careers they can pursue with accounting degrees, and then I talk to them about taxes. All the taxes that we pay - school, property, sales, income, etc, and we talk about what the money pays for. I will use some of the info from this article in my next "class" this spring. thanks!
  4. ahhh....yess....it is cafe plan
  5. No such item on the pull up for box 14. Box 12 D is 401K, but they have not changed her gross pay amount. Not sure what this is. (And neither does the client....)
  6. I have never been so busy on the 15th! I'm usually at the grocery store by now.

  8. I hope he's reporting that $2 income and paying tax on it. Not too many deductions on that one.
  9. It makes sense to me. Tighten the withholding so that tax withheld is what it should be, and be done with it. It would save such a hassle for so many people, and would effectively get rid of the snake-oil tax preparers such as HRB
  10. I only had that happen a couple of times this year, but in the last couple of weeks. Earlier in the year, no problem. I wondered as well
  11. Because I'm getting really tired of opening envelopes. Really? People don't even look at their W2? I wish I were so trusting and simple.
  12. well - if they are only W2 people, and have refunds, the IRS is happy to keep their money. Maybe the IRS thought they were getting a little tight on funds, and sent out notices to such non-filers to up their pot a little.
  13. it's like the fox telling you to close the barn door.............
  14. Ha - my secretary refers to her own spidey sense when she knows it's going to be a troublesome client and we should just say "no".
  15. Generally - timber is gravy. And subject to capital gains tax and that usually isn't a bad thing. Unless the purchase contract detailed timber vs. land being purchased - which no one ever thinks to do - then there's not much cost basis there. Or if the taxpayer is in the business of managing growth and cutting of timber, then its more complicated. But in your case, the kids were - well - taking the gravy. The fact that people don't want to pay tax on the sale of timber is one of my pet peeves. Come on- you didn't put a dime into it, and you just collected how many thousands of dollars as a pure gift of nature. And you can't pay tax - let alone only cap gain tax? (I know - grumble, mumble.....)
  16. oh no - who moves to NY???? Yes - NY IT-203 is pretty straight forward. But you if end up with specifics, post again!
  17. Got it working this morning.................................thank goodness!! What a kick reading all your responses.
  18. Never fails. in the 11th hour, there is always printer trouble of some sort. In years past we've had last minute overnight orders of toner or drum. Sometimes it's lack of paper. This year it jammed. It has been cleaned out. And it won't clear. It's a simple little printer. There's nothing stuck in it. Turned on and turned off. Unplugged. All the usual. Come on little printer. Just a few more...............
  19. "I broke even on my business." "I am doing this for a business, not as a hobby." "I'll be in tomorrow to pay my bill." My favorite - "I forgot my checkbook."
  20. On the efile screen, my efile says rejected by processing center. But on the line item for that client, it says transmitted to EFC, and won't go to rejected. just sitting there. I tried to delete the efile but it won't let me. not sure what to do with it.
  21. Catherine - I hope things turn around for you. But you know - clients are like gum stuck on your shoe........
  22. ATX has done well. Just a couple small complaints there. I have just had some PITA's this year - new start-up corps, s-corp with no basis, more out of state clients than usual, bankrupt clients with leins, client getting audited, new HUD loan for a client, 2 new attorney clients and you all know how they are, someone asking about women-owned businesses, sick kids, sick dog, sick me, now all this snow!
  23. this is what i'm starting to look like this year.....................
  24. This is an ATX thing that could be fixed. Since I have to input the taxpayers age, why doesn't the HSA worksheet know that my taxpayer is over 55 and take the higher limit.
