  1. Make hay while the sun's shining. Besides, I'm headed out of town for a night Thrs/Friday because my daughter has her doctor appt in Rochester. We'll stay at the hotel and go shopping and eat out. Nice little get away. Gotta do something with the girls while schools out. Even though we'll have to stick needles in her while she's there. She's looking forward to swimming and getting good eats.
  2. I worked for a man once that put his last name and "CPA" on his license plate. When someone asked if CPA stood for cut, paste, and assemble, he promptly removed the plates. But I don't think he wrote off the car. But I like the shirt idea. Now she's trying to tell me she "knows" that she can write off her mileage to the shop. Afterall, she says - it's her shop. On and on it goes. I really need to start pre-screening for hair dressers.
  3. I would not consider this a business. No different than investing in a stock, making some money, and deciding to try again. Clearly investment in my mind. He's still at his day job. Buying 2 more houses isn't making him "in the business" at this point.
  4. I've actually been waiting for this. Client put a big advertisement painting on her car and now wants to write off the car. I'm thinking we can write off the cost of the painting. We can write off the actual mileage used for business. (She cuts hair.) But I'm a little sketchy on writing off the whole thing.
  5. start looking for new software..........
  6. Rarely does any one take the time to separately value mineral rights or timber when purchasing or transferring property. I think he's out of luck on that side of the transaction.
  7. Sadly I can tell you all about the Jodi Aires trial that I am watching while the program loads, while the depreciation loads, while the print function loads, while the program crashes, while the computer reboots.......I've never watched so much tv. Not because it's interesting either.
  8. Doesn't there have to be a written plan in place regarding the expenses and reimbursement. Other wise, the TP should have been 1099-d for the auto lease payment
  9. This is a qualified disability trust. This is the first year. In settling the case, the attorneys were paid close to $700,000. Those expenses create a huge loss. I was originally thinking that this would create an NOL to carryforward. Without over riding anything, ATX calls the atty fees "non-business" and excludes from the NOL calc. Does anyone have any thoughts on this one? Thanks.
  10. Agree with 39 years. I have been doing well with my depreciation so far, and it seems to be filling in for the most part. Had trouble with milage flowing to schedule F. I'm not sure what the trick is, or if it's just that the moon and the stars have to be lined up just right.
  11. May I ask what the shop is for? Is it a solid building on a real foundation, or a tin building on a floating slab?
  12. While you have the return open, under the efile heading, there is an option to "attach pdf" with efile, or something like that. Just click on that and a new screen opens that lets you pick what form you want. I always save to desktop in case I have to find it again. there's a warning about password protection which I ignored. Then I went straight ahead to efile the return, and it all worked. It seemed pretty easy after I put off doing it for a few days. I'm not real high tech here.
  13. Well - I'm not much help yet. But someday I'm leaving cold, snowy New York and I'm moving to Hawaii. However, for a small fee, I will travel there for you today to learn about Hawaii's tax law, and I'll let you know......soon......
  14. I don't know what it is about the print function, but if I am going to bomb, it is when I click on print. Always save before hitting print! And BACK UP every night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not just on ATX's default. Back up on a separate disk or thumb drive.
  15. I was also wondering what that was. Thank you. Although I like the second answer the best.
  16. Sounds like income to me. The obvious question is, why was debt forgiven if she can make payments? Mute point, probably.
  17. My backup file is vacant. I have not backed up to external drive since Feb 16, which is not the end of the world, but you know how many returns you go thru daily. You are right. backups should be everyday. And Sunday afternoon I sat here thinking i needed to do one, and then got busy working and forgot. Monday was doomsday. Now I'm re-doing a weeks worth of work. As if I weren't already a week behind to begin with Lesson learned!
  18. Where oh where did it go? I had lost the whole program last night. Now I cannot find my database. Was too dumb to do a full back up a couple days ago when i should have.
  19. will give it a try Was wondering if I needed to try to re-install/update windows.
  20. I have been doing “ok” with the software. No major issues. Each time I was booted out, I was able to get back in. But today my whole computer froze in the middle of me selecting print options in a corp return. Used task manager to stop program. Could not re-open program after that. Tried to repair from disk. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Tried to download updates from websites. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Tried to set my computer back to this morning when program was working fine. Rebooted. Nothing. Tried to uninstall and reinstall from disk. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Tried to uninstall and reinstall from website. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Tried to download updates again. Rebooted computer. Nothing. Error says windows stopped working. The program just won’t get anywhere. Stays on blue window and then says windows stopped and closes. Earlier noted 2 errors and a message: Error 1706 Error 1603 Cannot find “atx2012.msi” I see the installation process “extracting” msi files. Not sure what any of that means. Using Windows 7.
  21. How can SS withhold from the son's benefits? It's not his responsibility to repay his mom's overpymt? Make SS correct.
  22. That's my little buddy in my picture. He comes to work with me every day and is laying on my desk right now - on someone's papers. He peed on a couple of w-2s when he was little, and peed on a couple clients too. But now he's better at letting me know we have to go for a walk. Which gives me an excuse to get out of the office every few hours. I'm spoiled. Not too many people can bring their dog to work with them.
  23. After you breeze thru the very simple PA return, you will wish we all lived in PA. Usually they withhold exactly what they tax. If he's a simple w-2 then you will probably have a zero return. The ATX program may open up extra credit forms, but he won't be eligible. Not sure about your state, but many states give you a credit for taxes paid in another state, so look for that. I live in NY near the PA border, and have quite a few clients working in PA. NY gives a credit for the tax paid to PA. If there is local tax withheld, PA no longer requires that the local returns be filed if they are withholding exactly what the tax is - which they are.
