  1. I have a local banker that always tells his customers that social security is never taxed. Then when they withdraw extra IRA money, and their taxes go thru the roof, guess who gets the grief..........
  2. I've been overwriting the bottom line on the input page of Sch E and deleting the 8582 - on returns that are not complex and wouldin't really need one any way even though the program insists it be there.
  3. Well - I just talked to him and he informed me they were never married. So, that gives me a new twist.
  4. I'm just grumbling about it too. Seems cumbersome. The mileage worksheet is slow acting, and to click between assets makes the program skip around. Also, I don't like getting efile error for unassigned assets. I don't always want to get rid of assets and like to keep the record of them on the computer.
  5. Been using it for a while. Kind of a pain, because you need extra info and have to fill in extra dates, etc on the fee-collect form. I charge $25 more to use this service figuring they take $15, and my extra time is also worth something. Be careful of people who owe money to the IRS, that they haven't quite told you about. The IRS will hold the refund, and you will be chasing the client afterall. This happened to me when a client who's corporate tax return had delinquent taxes and the IRS took their personal refund. I wasn't doing the corp return and was not aware of the problems. Also be careful that your bill doesn't change on you - especially this year with the new ATX.
  6. My client divorced "lisa" a number of years ago. He had purchased a house that they lived in. According to their divorce agreement, she was to pay him $40,000. She never paid him. He got a lawyer. Now - maybe 5 years later, an agreement has been reached for her to pay $15000 over time. I believe that this is completely outside of the tax return. However, can he deduct his (outrageous) attorney fees on schedule A subject to 2%
  7. Hmmmm- i am thinking the w-2 is wrong. The housing allowance was supposed to be out of that gross w-2 amt.
  8. First I'm having a hard time making my W2 clergy work. They report roughly $50K on W2 by $30K of that is housing allowance. On line 7 shows up as $20 like it is supposed to . (marked clergy on w2 input. used box 14 to indicate housing.) But, error report says matching error on w2 detail vs. line 7. Regardless - i am getting EIC. I am thinking that the $30K of housing allowance should not be excludable from income for EIC, Doesn't seem kosher. But EIC worksheets just refer back to sch C. Has anyone dealt with this. Appreciate it.
  9. I can't rollover any one that has any meat to their return. I can rollover simple W2 clients, which I have about 10 of. Not exactly paying for the software yet, but keeping the lights on. I never thought that by this date we would still be dealing with such mickey mouse problems as rolling over a return. this is very frustrating.
  10. As if I don't have enough printing problems, I bought Staples multi-purpose paper and my printer does not like it:(
  11. Everytime I try - boom - we're shutting down. This has been very very frustrating so far.
  12. I do not prepare too much payroll. Beyond the very basics, I'm at a loss. But a client asked me this this morning. He hires union guys and makes contributions to their pension. Other than checking the box "retirement plan" does he have any further reporting on the pension contributions as far as the w-2? thanks.
  13. Yes sometimes people are a little rough on each other on this forum. I've been beat up before myself. Hey - sticks and stones. But I don't think this guy said anything rude to begin with. And haven't we all been on here complaining about ATX this season. Spell checker? Use of English? Reallly? Seriously?
  14. I can't figure out the letter thing for the life of me, and I don't really appreciate that I have to.
  15. We charge a flat fee each quarter to prep forms. If we have to calc any payroll (to let client know paycheck amt) we charge hourly for any additional time, we usually doesn't amt to much. I hate payroll and ATX has made it worse. I think I'm going to start wiping my hands of payroll and let the bigger companies take it. It's not worth the hassle. You think you are doing your client a favor, but I don't see them bringing me any chocolates.
  16. Ok - beneficiaries inherited the property. I don't think I have my mind around tax season yet:0 Thank you!
  17. mine still are not rolling over.....
  18. Older man dies. His real estate goes to the estate. Can't get it sold. 2 of the beneficiaries "take ownership" of the estate. (This is all I'm getting from the atty at this point.) Our county website shows the new owners with zero dollars paid for the property. An estate income tax return must be filed for other incomes. But this came to light in the conversation. What do I do with it?
  19. I don't like the 2 separate packages either. I don't do much payroll and it is just more monkeying around for us.
  20. I don't like the new design, but thinking that they are moving toward touch screen capability.
  21. It just really gets me that I fork over such a pile of money to them early - and they have basic software problems. a shell problem doesn't have anything to do with the IRS. Honestly - next year i'm looking at changing software.
  22. yeh- but why is it there. No one else has warning points under theirs. That I see. As you can see - I'm just a mild-mannered little pup.
