  1. Can a TP claim HOH when parents live outside of the country (Canada)? TP at a minimum meets the more than 50% support. Thanks Special rule for parent. If your qualifying person is your father or mother, you may be eligible to file as head of household even if your father or mother doesn't live with you. However, you must be able to claim an exemption for your father or mother. Also, you must pay more than half the cost of keeping up a home that was the main home for the entire year for your father or mother. If you pay more than half the cost of keeping your parent in a rest home or home for the elderly, that counts as paying more than half the cost of keeping up your parent's main home. ^^^ Rule doesn't say anything about living outside of the country and I just want to make sure there is no issue down the road.
  2. Was the penalty paid from any refundable credit?
  3. If life insurance company uses your dividends to pay the policy annual premium and no 1099-div was issued so far, would this be considered a taxable event?
  4. I remember it being a mess about 18-20 years when it was first introduced , even if you mapped an expense to the correct tax line, the bottom line never matched. We thought it was going to make business returns a piece of cake, the firm dropped it and went back to preparing returns the old fashioned way.
  5. File all of them as 1120S (don’t be a hero and try to save them on penalties) it’s seems your new client is habitual non-filer. Most importantly, get a retainer and informed the client of the monthly penalty he/she is going to incur for the return being late.
  6. Can a tax return be amended more then once? I have a new client that will benefit doing so.
  7. I would request a copy of the sisters tax return, if the sister has a brood of kids and she doesn’t, that will make a difference.
  8. Two words: Joel Osteen https://www.irs.gov/faqs/interest-dividends-other-types-of-income/ministers-compensation-housing-allowance/ministers-compensation-housing-allowance I like how they use reasonable in the above link

  12. “This tax season is going to be a disaster in terms of our own client service, but likely nothing as bad as next filing season when those $2000 refunds turn into $40 ("but you already got the money in your paycheck" isn't going to cut it).” Same thing I am telling my single, no dependent clients, and maybe it’s not a bad idea incorporating something to that nature on the transmittal letter and highlighting it.
  13. Q: is everyone adjusting federal withholding for 2018? I did a projection for a client using 2017 wages and withholdings and things look good, but I know the withholding should be less.

  16. Speaking of texts, I sometimes have clients tell me, I sent you a text and you never responded, I am like really, as far I as know you are calling me on a landline.
  17. Next time send them packing, I once made a mistake letting a former tax client use my computer to access their files, didn't remember the login info, wanted to call tech support etc... Now I say no.
  18. No, not in the prior years
  19. Has someone here been successful and in stopping back to back audits? I have a client that has been audited for 2010, 11, 12, 13 & 14 and now 2015.
  20. Are your clients (non w-2) giving you a break down of earnings between periods? Now I have a question, if the TP is a W-2 employee all year this form would not apply correct?
  21. Thanks everyone, I decided to go temporarily with Avast, I say temporarily because I needed a software to remove various virus from my associates computer and now that they are gone I am just going to go with Windows Defender.
