But, see Don's explanation above of why the monthly checks are smaller.

Oh, gee, seems like something like that would be in there. Just have no idea what to look under. Explanations section, maybe?. I don't have the upper end version that includes Client Relate -- and that might be where it is. Letters to send for year-end planning, that kind of thing is in Client Relate. Let me know what you find.

I copied the PayPal button from the PayPal site and pasted it on my web site. Clients have clicked on it and paid me via check, so I know it works. Easy as Cut & Paste. Actually, I had a choice of designs, so it took me longer to choose which button than it did to cut & past the button!

My kids love Angry Birds, also! I have an iPhone and love it. Have many apps, such as my CCH IntelliConnect research mobile version.

I'm going to add one or two monitors and hope to find one that pivots to portrait shape to display a whole page without scrolling down. Also adding a scanner to work with Scan (and maybe Flow) and my old computer networked in. Already printing to .pdf for my file copies and for anything I received electronically. Having a friendly, local techie network all my equipment for the first time. Schedule in my paper Filofax. Have eFax, so faxes are already in my computer. Have FileShare on my web site. Last year, a carpenter client installed a large mail slot in my front door for drop-offs -- my clients and I love it (no, it was not barter and I paid via check). I have the mobile version (free) of IntelliConnect on my iPhone to have with me; IntelliConnect and Tax Prep Partner (trying for the first time the latter this year) work from within a tax return or even alone for research. Also have virtual tech support and off-site back-up w/VMS in Maine (the old ATX techies). An external hard drive and flash drives for on-site back-ups. OIH, so as well as my office line, I have a house phone with ringer off but caller ID so I can take a call from, say, my husband or sister who's ill in IL but let most go to voice mail, especially when a client's here but even when working alone and not wanting to stop right then. My husband stocks up on chocolate at Cosco before tax season (and then repackages in serving sizes so I don't destroy my hard work at keeping my diabetes under control !!). These message boards are invaluable for heading me to the right sources and for stress relief. That's all off the top of my head. Have to order a new computer now.

No, NY accepts federal e-filing qualifications.

I finally got mine today, but it took about 90 minutes. FIrst, I was getting HTTP 500, and after calling and being transferred and holding, was told my email was used by someone else -- doubt it. After three more tries, got past that hurdle. But, my address is 73 Eleven O'Clock Road -- used it so it would match my tax return, but eventually it asked me to go back and remove the punctuation. Then, I used my nine-digit Zip code to match my tax return, but it wanted the "-" that it did not want in my telephone number or else only five digits! And so on and so on. Very time-consuming. Wish I'd waited until 1 December to push my renewal to December, but will be out of town now through the weekend, mostly for tax courses.

From IRS.gov ***Attention joint filers with different last names. Please wait until December 6, 2010, to submit a PTIN application if: your last return was married filing jointly, you were the secondary spouse on the return, and you have a different last name than your spouse. We are addressing a system issue that has prevented joint filers with different last names from getting their PTIN. We apologize for any inconvenience.***

No, no, no to CIncinnati! If he's going to the Big East, he better go to UConn! (TCU is joining the Big East next season.)

I was thinking I had to pay about $3 to put the money into my checking account, so I left it there to pay NY/CT-ATP fees throughout the year. But, it was way back in February that I looked that up and made that decision.

Thank you for sharing, Catherine. :read:

I do have a PayPal button on my web site. Once a client went home and paid via her checking account on PayPal. It's pricey to get money out of PayPal, but one of my tax preparers' organizations takes PayPal for our dinner meetings and seminars, so I use it all up that way. I want to make it as easy as possible for my clients to pay me now, not have to track what I haven't yet received. So, I accept all major credit cards and PayPal. Most of my clients write checks, but I want to be able to accept any type of payment. I'm out in the boonies, so even going to the bank to deposit checks is a hassle and doesn't happen immediately. I think QB will offer an electronic acceptance of checks. I use the Intuit merchant services, because as a QB ProAdvisor I get some savings and it dumps the info directly into QB for me. I don't have a swiper; many of my clients are giving me their number over the telephone anyway and are not present in my office at the time I complete their return. It's easy, and I only pay fees when I make money. If I end up paying my assistant for her time to make bank deposits, then the small fees for accepting credit cards makes sense and saves me time &/or money. DollarsSenses.com

FIngerprints were not needed for EAs when I got my EFIN very late in 2007. I was waiting until the last minute (well, 45 days before mid-January e-filing opened) for reasons I won't put in print. However, I received my EFIN in something like 12 days or something surprisingly short. Don't expect less than 45 days, though, and get started now.

I'd amend whichever is to be the primary, let's say husband for talking purposes. Use husband's original numbers. Then make all the changes to correct the returns, filing status, revising his Sch C, adding wife's numbers, etc. I'd use broad explanations: combining two self-prepared MFS returns into MFJ, correcting Sch C, etc. Since it was self-prepared and not in your system, I'd prepare the MFJ return the way it should be, then call up the 1040X and use the husband's original information with your preparation as the amended information.

And, whether you believe in nature or nurture, Catherine is to be congratulated on raising a great daughter worthy of bragging on!
