  1. Could be something funky happened when you moved 2007 returns to new computer. Any chance you still have old computer with 2007 and 2008 programs and could roll over the rest of your returns there and then export to a flash and import to new computer's 2008? Or, export again your remaining 2007 returns to a flash from old computer and import on new computer to 2007 and try rolling over to 2008? You get the idea. Something got corrupted. Maybe redoing a prior action will have it come through correctly this time....
  2. Is she there because she cannot handle her daily activities without help?
  3. Maybe even reinstall both 2007 and 2008. I have CCH's ProSystem fx, but couldn't pro forma at the start of the season from 2007 to 2008. Support checked me out and apparently I'd missed some 2007 updates. They said uninstalling and reinstalling was faster than downloading all the missed updates. Then, all worked as it should. They talked me through it and stayed with me until I'd pro forma'd a return from 2007 to 2008 successfully.
  4. Follow the directions for Schedule D for attaching quasi D-1s to Form 8453 to mail in while e-filing the return.

I stopped taking prior year returns weeks ago, meaning corresponding extensions for 2008. The people on time get to be ahead of the procrastinators in line during tax season.
  6. My prayers are with him. Our current priest was an army chaplain for many, many years and continued in the National Guard for more years until retirement.
  7. I have never seen a priest pick up the bill at a restaurant.
  8. Maybe a qualification for public office should be to actually try preparing your own return at least once!
  9. OK, so everybody, even the LLC, acted as if the parents still had use and benefit.... You've convinced me to change my mind. In the estate and a step-up in basis. Hope the estate taxes don't wipe out the taxes the kids save upon the sale.
  10. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
  11. That was what I went with after Lynn told me that the ML code Rra was for Roth IRA. They're very old accounts for this couple, so no problem with the time frame for opening the accounts or converting. No 1099-Rs, so I decided it was from their contributions those many years ago and not taxable. I made a note to myself. Hope I can decipher it if they receive any IRS correspondence! But it's only about $45 each, so hopefully the IRS has bigger fish to fry.
  12. Thank you, Eric, for your creativity as well as your technical expertise.
  13. Most of my clients are used to HRB where the preparers almost never put anyone on extension so they don't miss out on bonus money. And, most of my clients owe, so I have to do enough to calculate a reasonable amount to send in now. (Last year I worked a return with round numbers that seemed to have over 90% of her tax liability covered with w/h; unfortunately it was actually only 89.3% so she was very unhappy with me.) It's my clients that aren't understanding of my shorter than normal filing season this year. I just wish when they go around handing out extensions to brokerages and colleges or vote new tax laws in December so forms aren't ready when the filing season opens, that they would have to extend the filing season. Obviously, the government doesn't want to do that since they want to receive their revenues in the usual time frame. But, there should be consequences to our elected leaders; we shouldn't have to bear the brunt of our clients' wrath.
  14. My assistant just told me that BOTH the colleges her daughters attend had extensions until 20 March to mail the forms. At one college, the forms have been ready but the outside firm hired to process them is not going to mail them until the very last minute!
  15. I want an extension like all the big brokerages got. Now my clients are bringing me their Consolidated Forms 1099 and year-end brokerage statements with less than a month to go to complete all the returns I usually do in 3 1/2 months! Remember when Intuit got an extension to electronically file returns? I want a tax preparer extension. I'm the one my clients get mad at since I'm the one they see last. Clients don't remember that they received their brokerage statements in March instead of at the end of January or that some IRS forms weren't ready due to tax law changes for the second year in a row. That's my vent for the day.
  16. OK, so it was a settlement to the Roth IRA. Thank you for the translation. I'd sorted out all the other jargon but that. Now, if the client cashed or deposited the settlement check in their personal account, is it now a DISTRIBUTION from the Roth?
  17. Unless it sold inside the bankruptcy estate and was reported there.
  18. It's one of the smilies. When replying, click the icon that looks like Janitor Bob and scroll down for the birthday icon that KC made. I think she had to tell me how to find it, too.
