I want an extension!

I want an extension like all the big brokerages got. Now my clients are bringing me their Consolidated Forms 1099 and year-end brokerage statements with less than a month to go to complete all the returns I usually do in 3 1/2 months! Remember when Intuit got an extension to electronically file returns? I want a tax preparer extension. I'm the one my clients get mad at since I'm the one they see last. Clients don't remember that they received their brokerage statements in March instead of at the end of January or that some IRS forms weren't ready due to tax law changes for the second year in a row. That's my vent for the day.

I'm with you on this one! Between the corrected 1099's and the just-really-late 1099's the end of this season is already nasty -- and just going to get nastier. And you are exactly right that clients just don't get it/remember/understand/whatever that forms and statements are late therefore there is more for us to do in less time.

You should be getting an extension. You and your clients are entitled to it.

I usually insist on filing extensions for any client who comes in after March 20. Last year I moved it to March 15 because of the stimulus mess, and this year I decided March 10 was a good cutoff date. Glad I did that because I came down with a bad case of bronchitis this week so things are backing up a bit.

If you don't use extensions to control your work flow, you are cheating yourself out of valuable sleep & down time. I think it's much better to extend your hours but slow down your pace the last 4 weeks - this gives you valuable time to prioritize and be sure you don't overlook something important. I always tell my clients the last thing they want is an overworked, tired person handling this important task, so I'm not going to do that to them or to me. My recommendation is to file the extensions - and start doing it right now.

You are one wise person, John. I learn a lot from you. Just wanted you to know. Hope you feel better. --- Rita

BTW, those people in the empty bathtubs on the Cialis (sp?) commercials just make me sick. Who does that anyway? Sit in two empty bathtubs on the beach or in the neighbors yard, wherever they are?

Most of my clients are used to HRB where the preparers almost never put anyone on extension so they don't miss out on bonus money. And, most of my clients owe, so I have to do enough to calculate a reasonable amount to send in now. (Last year I worked a return with round numbers that seemed to have over 90% of her tax liability covered with w/h; unfortunately it was actually only 89.3% so she was very unhappy with me.) It's my clients that aren't understanding of my shorter than normal filing season this year. I just wish when they go around handing out extensions to brokerages and colleges or vote new tax laws in December so forms aren't ready when the filing season opens, that they would have to extend the filing season. Obviously, the government doesn't want to do that since they want to receive their revenues in the usual time frame. But, there should be consequences to our elected leaders; we shouldn't have to bear the brunt of our clients' wrath.

I wish I could rember the congress person, that on national TV the other morning, had the never to say that for 2009, they have until april 15, 2010 to change the laws. Just shows you how out of touch they are in Wasinghton DC.
