  1. Aren't you glad that you asked? The children do not qualify him for EIC unless he marries the mother.

  2. Massachusetts amended returns go best when you drown them in paper. If you send in the CA-6 alone (which is, as Jack notes, the amendment form -- for ALL Mass. returns), the first thing you'll get back is a notice asking for supporting documentation. I have always sent in the CA-6, followed by a new Form 1, marked across the top "As Amended" and with highlighter to call attention. I also append a copy of the original Form 1, marked and highlighted across the top "As Originally Filed". With all that paperwork, the amendment goes through smoothly. It also means that you can use the "changed" line items on the CA-6 just for the crucial items (of which one is always "total tax"). Catherine

  3. Correct. Remember that the relationship to the filer is "other".

  4. Thank you. One last item related to this. The program may suggest they (Children) qualify for EIC. In this particular case he can only claim them for exemptions only, and not for EIC purposes correct?

  5. It sounds like your net setup is not installed properly. If the printer is set up at the server then you will need to run the NetSetup again from the work station, and make sure your printer driver is installed properly at the work station. Try a quick test and try to print something from your work station to make sure the printer responds properly. If so re-setup the work station.

  6. Good for you, JB! That's a lot in a short time so keep on moving whenever you can. Stand and march in place on the phone to use up a few calories. Marathons and dive trips to great places for me work for me in off season. Last September was 2 weeks in the Maldives and the Chicago marathon in October. I was 4th in my age group (old ladies 65+) out of 23. Could have done better but my I was with my baby (57) brother who had 2 potty stops for 15 minutes total. First marathon jitters, I guess.

  7. Hey, Joan, if you're not seeing enough bookkeeping, tax planning, whatever to take you through the year but are getting lots of calls for tax preparation, then put people on extension to take as many tax clients as possible. You can prepare a lot more returns in 12 months than you can in three. New clients where you need to review past issues, complex clients needing research, clients who come in after 15 March, any criteria you choose. Offer them a discount if they'll go on extension if you have to. Most effective if they don't owe and aren't in a hurry for what looks like a small refund or seem disorganized, would take up a lot of your time, need hand-holding, are already bringing in info in drips and drabs, etc. Save your most time-consuming returns for later so you can prepare as many as possible now. My first year, learning new software, I offered discounts to some of my nicer clients who followed me if they'd go on extension. Only one preferred their return by 15 April.

  8. I started getting calls in December; I already have appointments set with new clients and have seen a few already for 4th quarter estimates and projections. It's my first year fully self-employed and I'm scared & excited; excited by all the new calls, and scared I won't have the energy for them. And I may not make enough to cover the rest of the year. But I haven't really stopped at all except by ignoring the work on my desk periodically since Oct. 15.
