  1. Is it too irresistible for some to avoid it... like me and anything chocolate? Darn it, now I want a cookie.

  2. My phone craps out and I wasn't getting my email pushes so I had lots of emails I didn't see. A late client comes in missing all 1099's but brings 12 monthly statements for each account to add up interest and dividends. If it weren't for the fact she brought me a collectors bottle of single malt to save and a second bottle of glenlivet to drink I would have been pissed.

  4. I just have to wonder why you actually want to keep her as a friend? She sure does not sound like a nice person, especially since you implied she neglects her ill mother. "Mom is upstairs...alone." The other things are questionable, but that is elder abuse, given the details provided.

  5. Columbus is credited for a lot of terrible things that teachers don't tell you. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/columbus_day

  6. If she were my *friend* I'd tell her that what she is doing is fraudulent, evasion of taxes, lying, and whatever other descriptive words I'd attach to the personal tactics of getting things for free like the hair in the food when dining out, and then I'd tell her that I'm not going to listen to it any more. After I said my piece, I'd hang up the phone or leave if this was a face to face. I would not want this person as a friend.

  9. Tell her she should stop telling you about her taxes because you are interviewing with the IRS as a special investigator. That should stop her in her tracks.

  10. I have always wonder how people can rack up so much wealth, it's usually the cheap ones that picks up a penny from the ground and takes the same paper lunch to work everyday.

  11. I just don't go there, have never gone there and have no intention of going there. I never argue politics or religion. Just not my cup of tea. I was glad when it got its own forum.

  12. I am wondering if my post is invisible. Anyway, Pub 17 Page 146 has the cans and cannots nicely laid out for you in a Table. Also see Pub 502. It does not sound to me as though the Fiduciary was administering allowable medical care other than transportation. I just had a client pick up the final return for his deceased mother. We certainly did not consider the time involved in his making final arrangements for hospice, etc; to be medical expenses. Only the amounts he paid with her money for actual professional medical care.

  13. If we are voting, my vote is -> don't close the political forum. It's always good for a chuckle or two.

  14. Jack, if you don't like the political forum, just don't go into it. I don't. What goes on there doesn't bother me a bit. I don't know anything about it.

  15. Jack: We have considered closing it. Still might. I'm not in any hurry to do anything though.

  16. CA doesn't conform to all the bonus depreciation either, so I have to weigh the benefit of accelerating depreciation vs. the pain of keeping separate schedules. ATX is now pretty good at making the adjustment, but I used to have to manually check and enter differences. In fact, I think my suggestion of 'can't you fix this?' got that function as an enhancement a few years ago.

  17. I sort of agree, is there was a 1099 last year, not given to me this year, then its my duty to question it. That's the point of continuity with a client and your advantage then them going to turbo.

  18. I think you are correct about Drake. They have figured out that the purpose of a tax program is to prepare an accurate tax return quickly. It doesn't need to be designed to launch a space shuttle.
