Rich, many of us will be holding you and your wife in our thoughts for successful surgery outcome. Family always comes before work, in my opinion.6 points

I think you stole that one from me! Its posted behind my desk in a nice frame. right next to another that says. "I don't like charging friends for services but after long and exhaustive research I have determined that my enemies won't do business with me."4 points

I don't believe in hiding out. I would have no trouble telling a client that shows up unexpectedly, to call me later on in the week to schedule an appointment. But if they convinced me [this would take 2x the normal fee] to do their work today I would add to my engagement letter. "Since your information has been presented so close to the filing deadline, I will use my best professional efforts to prepare your return accurately but You must acknowledge that I will be presenting you this return without it going through my normal review process. You agree to hold me harmless for any errors that would or should have been apparent to me if I had more time to review the final returns. Additional fees will apply if an amended return needs to be prepared."3 points

Joan: My wife is having surgery for Breast Cancer tommorrow. I haven't gotten anything done for two months since this process started. I will still bill my late clients a premium, but I will be giving those that got me stuff earlier a break... Your client has got to pay. Sorry. She has had those receipts since January. All she had to do was drop them off. Maybe she will next year..... Rich3 points

My phone craps out and I wasn't getting my email pushes so I had lots of emails I didn't see. A late client comes in missing all 1099's but brings 12 monthly statements for each account to add up interest and dividends. If it weren't for the fact she brought me a collectors bottle of single malt to save and a second bottle of glenlivet to drink I would have been pissed.2 points

Even if helping a client keep more of his own earning increases poverty,it would not be appropriate to cause someone to overpay his taxes to decrease poverty. If there is a problem, it should be handled by changing laws, not by failing to take advantage of existing laws.2 points

Business clients Wednesday and Thursday. A full day of CE on Friday. Funeral and a flu shot Saturday. Jump out of a perfectly good airplane with my two children Sunday.2 points

I tell this "type" of person ( usually hairdressers) "Don't tell me anything I have to testify in court about" - -usually shuts them up.2 points

Something else to consider when evaluating other software is whether or not the company gives access to the prior year programs and how many years are made available. People file late, we file for carrybacks, and the need for amendments always comes up. Those long time users that renew with their existing software vendor will continue to have access to the back years and be able to file 3 years through the MeF as long as the return qualifies for that, obviously. However, for those of you considering a move away from ATX, if you don't renew with ATX for this coming year you will lose the ability to efile through the ATX's system. I know that Drake gives access to all the years back to 2001, but what about the other main vendors (Ultra Tax, Lacerte, Pro Series, and CCH for Taxwise and Prosystem fx) ? How many back years are made available?1 point

It may be common, but ATX has some ground to make up in the customer confidence department.1 point

I have a half-dozen or so from whom I had heard *nothing* since extensions were filed -- not even email notes from reminders I sent in May. Three of them called yesterday and I told each of them to bring/send papers but that no work would be done until after the 15th. Two of these clients need independent contractor 1099-MISC's sent out... I have two left from whom I need bank info for payments, and signature forms, before filing. Otherwise done. A couple to whom I sent electronic review copies and got signatures and after today will get everything printed and mailed out to them. Our returns are usually the first done every year, as a test for the new software. This year I think they got delayed 'til early April for some late document (notice of a corrected statement to come? -sounds about right; there were lots of those this year, for scads of people). As for me, I am out of my office this afternoon with an accounting client and this evening for a twice-a-year meeting of the pistol league team captains and league officers. So if any of the remaining three call after noontime, they will get my voice mail.1 point

anyone who has unpredictable income should go on extension. Let me list a few reasons. You might file in april and have a refund applied and then you lose a few big clients and could really use the money. You file in april and take bonus depr and then find this year much more profitable and want the deductions in 2013. And the biggest reason is you have to fund your Keogh when you file so what if you max out for 2012 in april and then have a real need for the money in 2013? by filing an extension you don't have to fund till you file. My returns is done in January but I hold it till now in case my situation changes.1 point

OK Jack. You're prohibited from making any political posts until you can verify that your return is done.1 point

Agreed! But, frequently taxes will follow their own type of logic. Just not the kind that most humans will understand.1 point

NY HAS no logic, its possible to be a resident of the city but not the state. remember, taxes aren't logical.1 point

I feel your pain! Have you gone to your Trashcan and tried to recover that file?1 point

I just have to wonder why you actually want to keep her as a friend? She sure does not sound like a nice person, especially since you implied she neglects her ill mother. "Mom is upstairs...alone." The other things are questionable, but that is elder abuse, given the details provided.1 point

Having been through a divorce and then a custody battle (that was really about child support; he didn't want his son!), I do not believe in divorce. I do believe in murder.1 point

DIVORCE vs. MURDER A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I'd like to buy some cyanide." The pharmacist asked, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?" The lady replied, "I need it to poison my husband." The pharmacist's eyes got big and he explained, "Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband, that's against the law! I'll lose my license! They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife. The pharmacist looked at the picture and said, "You didn't tell me you had a prescription..."1 point
