  1. I have one client that is already asking when the K-1s are going to be available from the trust. To be fair, we have been gathering all the documents during the year for the final year of the trust and I have everything but the forms in ATX. The tax return is mostly done, but I have no CA trust forms and of course efile is not open yet. The Trustee is sick and tired of her half brother making demands on her during the entire process. It is a thankless job to be the trustee of a decedent trust. And so it begins...tax season 2024 arrives in 2023. Tom Longview, TX

  2. Be careful when saying "WISP" to an IT person. For them, it will generally mean a type of router that connects to a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP).

  3. It is not a new form or concept, been around for as long as I can remember doing taxes; and referred to in multiple replies to the OP above.

  5. My local IT business that I have worked with for at least 15 years, decided that I am too small for them. I was really sad, but they don't want one computer jobs anymore. They had no idea what a WISP plan is and they work with some other local CPA firms, so I guess I will just keep searching. I really want to change to a laptop with a dock soon, since I will be retiring at the end of 2024 and don't want to be tied to my gigantic desk. I'm going to try to sell it, since we will be downsizing and moving out of state.

  8. I think Catherine has someone that prepared hers or worked with her. It might have been Tech4Accountants. I took my template to my computer guy who has built my last many computers and configured everything including firewall, etc. We worked through it together as he has done this for other firms. I had to fill in the details about equipment the majority of which he provided, connected and secured. He is a cyber security expert so I feel pretty good about my WISP. We followed the IRS Pub. 5708. It took only about an hour so his charge to review and confirm some things was not bad. It will likely be my last straw and surely bring on retirement at the end of this 3 year license period, if not before.

  9. Someone mentioned Tech 4 Accountants. Anyone used them? Reliable? Cost effective?

  10. Worse than that. She went on and on about how she KNOWS we all make up basis figures to benefit our clients. I think at that point every practitioner in the room went through their mental notes of how many hours they had spent trying to come up with a reasonable basis for multiple clients. No Karen, we don't make this stuff up. We had a client with a basis issue, and he put an attorney relative on speaker phone to tell us that it was legal to use 90% of selling price as basis. "WHAT?", we all said, and demanded the code section. The call ended with us insisting the client go through records and give us the real basis. He produced it quickly--exactly 90% of the selling price for every single stock. Let Karen Hawkins blame us for that one!

  11. Bear in mind that there are some who don't back up anything. Worse yet, are the clients who keep everything, including banking and business bookkeeping on their phones. They make me shiver and cringe.

  14. UGH. One of our kids is dealing with a break in/theft, and the person who they can prove did it, is related to a muckety muck in their local law enforcement. We have given them our suggestion (ask the DA who their mutual aid agency is, which should be compelled to investigate), and get their landlord and renters insurance folks involved. Calm is over...
