  1. The son's estate will be responsible for the paying of his debts. If there are no assets in the estate, then the creditors will not be paid. That is not to say that they will not try to coerce Mom into paying, but unless she was a co-signor on his debts, she has no obligation to pay them. The life insurance proceeds, naming her as beneficiary, are not part of his estate. Life insurance proceeds are only part of the estate if a beneficiary is not designated.

  2. I have seen the check written to a state, sent to the IRS being stamped with "DEPARTMENT OF TREASURY" over the name written on the check then processed. Intentional Apathetic Ignorant Stupidity cannot be healed.

  3. I dunno about you all, but my bookkeeping income has declined over the past five or six years. Closed businesses don't need bookkeepers. Retired business owners don't need bookkeepers. People are not opening businesses here. Well, if they are, they've heard that I'm mean and they don't want me, even if I charge less than others. And I do. And I am. Insert sound of cracking whip here.

  4. I should raise my rates... sometimes I think I'd make more money running a retail cash register, with less aggravation.

  5. I have several corporate returns in the works, with HUGE holes in the info needed (Form 3115 info for one, one client can't find details on a $2k+ asset purchase that is NOT in QB that I suspect is either 2015 or she used a personal card by accident, etc.). And I'll be at the NATP conference from tomorrow through Saturday. Argh! I will see Independence Hall and take my cross-stitch project with me for the train. Breathe. It's OK. I hope.

  6. I don't doubt that our profit margins are higher than most. Our most used equipment is our big ole brains and we got em free from our mommas. And daddies.

  7. However, bottom line, I do believe that most of us actually like what we are doing. That other world isn't all that great either, at times.

  8. "I found the authority in the regs several years ago." Thanks good, to know. TP will be issuing a new check to the state and have the IRS apply the credit to his 2014 tax return. MAS

  10. Actually, the taxing bodies do have the authority to do this. I've had several cases where the client has sent the payments to the wrong agency. The last time it happened, the IRS deposited the IL check and sent a bill for the remainder and Illinois sent a refund of the overpaid amount. IRS can even adjust a check down in amount if it is made out for too much. I found the authority in the regs several years ago.
