  1. Older article, still pertinent, has code sec & reg references: http://www.journalofaccountancy.com/issues/2008/nov/depreciatepropertyinlikekindexchangesconsistently.html

  2. You could get a return transcript. Have your clients sign Form 2848 and call the Practitioner Priority Line and ask what was changed. For the record, the IRS always sends letters when a refund is changed. Now whether the USPS delivered it or not, is another question.

  3. I don't usually, but I started studying for EA in May so I held off until I passed all the exams and got my certificate. I started with CE for that designation this week.

  4. My CE is spread throughout the year, and begins with the IRS Tax Talk Today webinars which are offered on an almost monthly basis. My state society offers CE in late May/early June. I always attend a 16-hour year-end tax update in early December. Most years I get about double (or more) the requirements per IRS/NAEA.

  5. I have the 80hr over two years requirement. But I try to get 40 each year. I do a little in spring and summer but most in Nov/Dec. I do a lot on line (some live).

  6. Different practices, different cultures. There is no slow time in my practice. And what the heck is a "vacation"? I do try to get mine finished up early in December to avoid that "if something serious come up". And no - it is not at all like our derelict clients. I am not asking anybody to go out of there way or to work overtime nor do I cause undo stress on anyone (other than myself) by letting my CPE compliance drag on into December. Fact of the matter, some of the best CPE is available in December.

  7. Have you actually seen the IRS correspondence your client received? If you are simply working off information the client gave you, it's possible she may be the potential victim of some sort of scam or ID theft effort.

  8. She should be able to call and request that they explain the changes they have made, and with her permission you should be able to listen to the call. OR you can get a signed Form 2848 and call and request that the change be explained to you. OR you can submit the 2848 to the CAF center, wait a week or so, and look at the account transcript on line which should explain the changes. If they have changed her return to a refund, I am not sure why you need a 1040X to get her refund. They should send that automatically. Of course, they usually include an explanation when they notify you that they have changed the return. Are you sure thay you saw the entire letter - front and back?

  9. I'm getting them too, and my reporting year end is June 30th. I purchase an unlimited webinar package most years so I'll do some tax-related courses between now and the end of 2016 before the next busy season gets rolling.

  11. Maryland didn't notify me (personally) that the rules were changing, but they posted on their website that in order to prepare taxes you needed to be a CPA, EA or to pass the exam they had prepared. Before the Love case, the IRS didn't inform me either but their website mentioned that you had to pass the tests if you wanted to prepare taxes for other people. Are they required to notify tax preparers o tax preparers need to know the requirements? Another question, if you have been doing taxes for so long, why don't you sit on the exam which is a very simple exam you don't have to explain how long you have been doing taxes?

  12. There are lots of cases where something designed for the PC loses functionality on the Mac. Excel for Mac is another good example. It works well overall, but some minor functions work differently on the Mac and those quirks can be very annoying in some cases. As has been stated - each has its own strengths and weaknesses. The key is knowing which is which. "Knowledge tells us a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom consists of refusing to use it in a fruit salad."
