  2. Turning off your anti-virus software is like walking outside naked....no one wants to do it and no one wants to see you do it. Turned off my antivirus and restarted my services and everything is fine. I guess if I only have to go through this every 3 years it won't kill me. Tom Longview, TX

  3. I'm doing the opposite; getting rid of my biz clients and just doing personal. I've only enough clients to work very part time and one of my more complicated returns decided to go with someone in town. Actually the partner that just inherited a bunch of money and rental properties decided to go elsewhere. I was dealing with the partner that used to make all the money & had the complicated return. We had a long conversation & I told him not to worry; I was trying to retire and doing so by attrition. This season I'm only working a few hours a day.

  4. You do have to combine the two forms, but you don't necessarily "add" column B. You add the amounts in Columns A and C. Form 8962 has instructions for Column B, which are different if the forms came from different states or the same state. You do add Column B for different states, but for the same state, you may need to recalculate the amount (at https://healthcare.gov/tax-tool if the state doesn't have it's own exchange).

  5. I am starting to get millennials in the 16 to 18 year old range, mostly kids of my clients, who are filing their first tax returns. I have to make a conscious effort not to laugh when I watch them try to sign their names in cursive. They get a pained expression on their faces and it takes forever. Many just give up and print or make an illegible mark. I'm afraid that within a another generation cursive writing will be lost art.

  7. I can relate to kids not being able to sign in cursive. Even some young adults in their early 20's cant. Fortunately our school system has brought it back and my gkids are learning how to write in cursive.

  8. "Turning off your anti-virus software is like walking outside naked....no one wants to do it and no one wants to see you do it." Somewhat. Turning off save and accurate AV is not wise for most. Not turning off the heuristic garbage foisted on unsuspecting users is worse than going outside nekkid. Heuristics are simply wild guesses as to what someone might create in the future. They are the cause of most false positives, and issues like Tom likely had. The ability to correct an issue by turning off something proves the something was worse than useless. How much time has Tom spent on this issue, caused by lousy AV? Worse yet, AV which does nothing all year is good, since most don't do stupid things, but AV which is often popping up "warnings" (usually false positives), just to get renewals, is robbery. I will say it forever, use the AV which is part of your OS provider's offerings, which is updated almost daily by the OS, and don't waste a cent on third party AV. OR, at least, update your third party AV daily, and hope they are not defrauding you (and everyone else too) with their false positives.

  12. The toys most likely did not increase in value "over time". Therefore basis of gifts would be equal or greater than sell price. Taxpayer is entitled to making a reasonable estimate. Unless the toys were collector items, I would accept a reasonable estimate of basis = sell price and call it good.

  13. The individual sold the toys to raise money for college and I would say did a bangup job. She has no clue what they cost so I would submit the basis is zero. Even so this is now merely a technical discussion as I have just about completed entering them on Form 8949 and Schedule D. Her income is well below the level at which the capital gain will be taxed. She is not in any form of business as these were simply items accumulated over a period of years and as noted the money went toward her first year tuition. I am really glad of this outcome as she is trying to advance her station in life. And Ebay did send her the 1099 with every item listed with selling price.

  15. The program doesn't allow you to create two. We always just add the two together and let the stone land where it falls. IMO, the 8962 is one of the most difficult forms to understand. At least, they gave us more leeway this year.

  18. My favorite is "Why is my 401(K) distribution included on my return? I already paid the tax (pointing to the withholding box). It shouldn't be on my return." Some people are convinced they are "paying" the tax twice and can't grasp the concept that the withholding is just a prepayment of the tax that is going to be due, not the tax itself.

  19. Because my return still won't efile. I tried without deleting & re-installing (rejected). So then I deleted the 1116 & reinstalled. Still rejected. My form update report shows I have Version 115 which is supposed to correct the functionality so the return wouldn't reject for error code 004-003 but that is what is causing it to reject!
