  1. You know this isn't true if you don't hear anything about it besides through an email forward. Gun owners would be going nuts. I know I would be.
  2. Yes, that's right. As for the original question, I'm not sure I understand the problem. I don't use the View New Content feature, so I'll have to do some poking around. EDIT: ok, did a little poking. I didn't even know the "View New Content" button was there in the old version of the forum software. It looks like what it does is shows you where new posts are made since your last visit. When I tested it, there were a number of new posts, then I logged out, logged back in, and checked again, and nothing was listed there at all. If I log out, wait a few hours, and logged back in, only threads with new posts since my last visit would be shown. So, it seems to me that read/unread status doesn't affect the "View New Content" feature. It only compares the date/time of your last visit to the dates/times of forum posts to show you a list of anything that's happened since you were visiting last. Now, I'm not sure if this behavior can be changed or not, I'll have to do some more poking.
  3. "Grok" from Stranger in a Strange Land has even made it into the dictionary, although the definition is somewhat lacking. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Grok
  4. Wondering which of his books it came from, I Googled it. I'm in between books right now, so I think I'll pick up "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" this weekend.

On the topics page, in the column that shows the number of replies/views for each topic (Stats column), click on the number. For example, if it says "6 Replies" click the number 6, and it'll open a little popup window with that list of people along with the number of times each person has posted in that topic.
  6. It is, and should always be met with a heavy dose of skepticism. Especially on the internet.
  7. Wow, watch New Moon for free?! I guess I'm not the target audience for this kind of trick. Yuck.
  8. I would be amazed if a program that runs fine in Vista 32 bit didn't work in Vista 64 bit. It may not be an officially supported platform, but I'd be willing to bet that it works just fine. Every single 32 bit piece of software I use (that works in Vista) works perfectly in Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit. If it MAX doesn't, they need to seriously get their $#!* together. The memory restriction on a 32 bit operating system alone is a huge reason to head to 64 bit as soon as possible. Computers with 4+ GB of RAM are becoming very common. EDIT: I'm talking about software applications here. Hardware drivers (for printers, scanners, sound cards, cameras, etc) are a different story.
  9. If it weren't for that pesky four letter search term requirement, I would have searched for "TRX". Instead I didn't use any search terms at all. The search returned ALL of your posts from that time period, and I quickly skimmed the topic titles for anything relating to TRX. Advanced Search is here: http://www.atxcommunity.com/index.php?app=core&module=search I typed Margaret in the box for Author, and used the date range boxes to limit the time frame of the results.
  10. Posts about tax software boring?! Never! The posts are still there. I found the threads using the Advanced Search option to get all posts made by you between April 1, 2009 and May 31, 2009. Here are links:

I realize that the header still takes up a lot of space.. there's just so much up there now, that because of the way it's structured, I can't change it much. But now, in comparison to the way it used to be, there should be very little difference in where the pinned topics start (bottom two red lines) The header logo is bigger, but at the same time, that top location went from three rows down to two, saving space. The Breadcrumbs and pagination take up more space than they used to, but the removed headings for the pinned topics "Important Topics" gave back most of that space as well. So while things do look bigger, it isn't very far off from where it was before. With a little more tweaking, I'll be able to make it even with where it was before... although it may still not "feel" like an improvement. Happy Thanksgiving! EDIT: Oh! One last question. Does the Donations tab fit up with the rest of the tabs at the top at 800x600, or does it drop down to the next line?

I've tweaked the ATX Community theme just a little bit to try and use less vertical space. The following graphic shows the current difference between the old layout and the current "ATX Community" skin. The top two horizontal red lines show the difference between top of the Topic List. The bottom two red lines show the difference between the top of the first post. Removing the headers for "Important Topics" and "Forum Topics" reduced the difference considerably.
  14. Congrats, Margaret! Also, that's not the only recent milestone! The ATX Community just hit 1000 members :)

    Forum Tips

Google Search the ATX Community One of the problems with the internal search is that it's unable to search for words with less than four characters, making it difficult to find threads containing a particular state abbreviation or common three letter acronyms like EIC, NOL, AMT, etc. The Google Search doesn't have this limitation, and is also quite a bit faster than the internal forum search. The only drawback is that you don't have the same level of control over the searches (searching for date ranges, or posts by specific users)

Web software like this forum needs to be constantly updated so as to not become vulnerable to hacking. This was a major version change, and unfortunately the older version is no longer being maintained. You'll be happy to know, though, that these major upgrades don't happen often, so it'll likely be quite some time before the next big overhaul. Please, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask here or send me a private message!

Pick up reading where you left off When returning to the forum after being gone for a while, threads with new unread posts will have the following icon before the thread's title: Clicking that little image will take you to the first unread post, right where you left off reading. Alternatively, if you just want to get to the end of the thread in a hurry, clicking the member's name under "Last Post Info" will take you to the last post in the thread.

Oh no! Well, it seems that your function keys are not working as they should. Sometimes keyboard function keys have secondary functions associated with them, but they're all different. These secondary functions are sometimes printed above, below, or on the front side of the function key. There should be a way to toggle between primary and secondary functions--it's usually some button on the keyboard that does it, but it's hard to say without actually seeing your particular keyboard. Figuring out that issue would make switching between Normal and Full Screen mode very convenient. You can usually exit Full Screen mode without using F11 by moving your mouse to the top of the screen to expose the browser controls and right-clicking to find the appropriate menu item. It may take some searching to find the correct spot to right-click.

Hmm, that's very strange about your F11 thing. It should make the browser do something no matter which monitor it's on. What Browser and version are you using? I checked IE 8 and Firefox 3.5 and it did work for me. Some fancy/new keyboards mess with the operation of the function keys, so maybe try finding the option using your browser's menu? In Firefox, it's under the View menu. Not sure about where it is in different versions of IE (Tools menu, maybe). I just realized that CleanCut wasn't available for anyone else but me. That's fixed now.

The drop-down menu at the very bottom left-hand corner of the website. Breadcrumbs are the path to your current page, for example: ATX Community > ATX Community Forum > General Chat > Forum Upgrade Full screen mode makes the entire website go full screen, removing any hint of the browser interface, so your whole screen space can be used to browse the website. The Address bar, Back/Forward buttons, tabs, all of that is hidden until you bring your mouse to the top of the screen.

Yes, the icons to the left show if there are unread posts in each forum, and inside a specific forum, the icons on the left show if there unread posts in each thread. As a test, you can scroll to the bottom and click the link that says "Mark Board As Read" From then on, any time a post is made in any thread or any forum, the icon will change to show you. In the CleanCut theme, threads with unread posts are also in bold. I understand about the dual monitors. In fact, one of mine died over the weekend, and I felt claustrophobic using only one until I could get a replacement. I will look into the possibility of creating a smaller template. I might have to remove a few features, such as the breadcrumb, or things of that nature which take up vertical space in the header. I do have two other suggestions for you though. Try Google Chrome, its interface is very minimal, and leaves more room for actual web browsing. Or, try the full screen feature of your current browser. In Firefox and Internet Explorer, I think the shortcut key to toggle full screen mode is F11.

Unfortunately, the old theme is incompatible with the new version of the forum software. There is now a choice between three themes. The default theme is called "ATX Community (large text)". There is another version of the same theme available, called simply "ATX Community" which has smaller text. I have also added a theme called "CleanCut" which is totally different. I don't think any of these will be much of an improvement at 800x600 resolution, but you can look through them and pick whichever works best. Themes are changed with a drop-down box at the very bottom left-hand corner of the site. Margaret, what size is your monitor? 800x600 seems to be less and less supported for software and websites as larger LCD monitors become more common. Maybe a larger monitor at a higher resolution (20" at 1024x768, maybe) would give you the best of both worlds? (big picture plus more screen real estate) EDIT: OldJack, tried to send you a PM, but couldn't. Must have disabled your private messages?
