  1. I deleted every user that registered today. I hope we didn't have any legit registrations, but things were getting out of hand. I've also patched some of the SPAM protections and enabled some other security features. Hopefully that keeps the bots out... I'll be watching tomorrow morning to make sure the changes did the trick.
  2. Looks like I'll be shutting down the forum for a little bit to clean up the mess and patch the forum's CAPTCHA feature. Sorry for the short notice!
  3. I've recently learned through the joke that is our presidential election that they make pig lipstick and pitbull lipstick. I was, however, not aware of modem lipstick.
  4. If you have the same problems across all computers, wired and wireless alike, your suspicions may be correct. It might also be a failing DSL modem, failing router, or a damaged/noisy phone line.
  5. Also, there are a bunch of different software packages for Windows emulation on a Mac. My personal favorite is Parallels. This video demonstrates Coherence Mode, which is a great feature: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN9jNNeEd98 I haven't got any sound on this computer, so I apologize in advance if this video features obnoxious music instead of useful narration.
  6. Under the box where you write your post, there is a section called "Attachment Editor" Using the controls on the right, browse to the file you wish to attach and hit the Upload button. This puts your file into your attachment space, which is like a library of the files you've uploaded. Once your file is in your attachment space, you can use the drop-down-box on the right labeled "Manage Current Attachments" to insert a link to the file into your post, or to delete a previously uploaded attachment.
  7. There's nothing special about Apple hardware, except that it's pretty. My personal feeling is that if you want to use the OS X operating system, buy a Mac. If you don't, you're probably better off saving some money and buying a PC... unless the aesthetic style of the Mac hardware is worth the price difference to you.
  8. If Microsoft were to continue to fix Vista for 7 years as they did for XP, then I'm sure it could reach XP's level of stability. One issue with (32bit) XP is that it's only going to recognize a maximum of 3.5GB of RAM.
  9. I'm pretty sure the leader's name/nickname was Hannibal, and then the other guy was Murdock. I don't know if the van had a name, but it was awesome.
  10. Sorry for taking so long to respond.. The grand total (with three hard drives) was less than $850. This does not include monitors, keyboard, mouse, operating system.. I already had all of these. With only a single 250GB hard drive, the price would be closer to $720. With a single 500GB hard drive, the price would be around $830. I figured that although not everyone is interested in putting together their own computer, they might be able to benefit from the research I put into picking the parts. (I'm picky about nerdy stuff like this) Also, if you give someone a nice shopping list of parts with prices, you're probably less likely to be overcharged for the system. (it shouldn't take more than a couple hours to put together the computer and maybe another half an hour to install the operating system)
  11. This whole thread reminds me of a demotivational poster I just purchased for my office:
  12. I recently built myself a new workstation machine. I'm not sure if this will come in handy, but here's the parts list: Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811112158 Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817341012 Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128344 Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115017 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231122 Video Card (nothing special, but fine for a workstation. Went with this over the 8400GS because this doesn’t require a fan) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150255 CD/DVD Burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827151154 Hard Drives: (three of these) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822148262
  13. That description sounds like the web browser isn't loading the style sheets for the site. I would clear my cache and reload the page. The page should look about the same in Firefox, Opera, Safari, and other mostly standards compliant browsers (and even Internet Explorer should be able render it correctly) If clearing the cache doesn't help, I'd like to see a screenshot if possible.

I'm not saying you're old or anything but... no, I don't remember any of this :P
  15. It's been about 8 years since I've used Eudora so I can't really make any comparisons, but I do remember hearing that Qualcomm was creating a Eudorafied version of Thunderbird called Penelope. EDIT: Actually, it's a Thunderbird extension called Penelope. Links: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Penelope https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4772
  16. Republicans had a chance to have a real conservative candidate in this election, and his name was Ron Paul. The problem is that the Republican party is no longer conservative. A humble foreign policy is no longer part of their platform. Many republicans who spend their time watching/listening to talking heads instead of thinking for themselves don't seem to realize that having the US military deployed in 135 countries is the antithesis of conservatism. At any rate, there already is a -real- conservative party. The Libertarian party is the third largest political party in the US, and was formed in 1971. They're a bunch of crazy people who think we should have both personal freedom AND economic freedom, and not have to choose one over the other. Imagine that?
  17. If there are any Firefox fans around, you might want to check out the latest version. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/down...&lang=en-US You'll have to be patient though, they're trying to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most software ever downloaded in 24 hours, so the servers are a bit sluggish. I've been using Firefox 3 since it was still in Beta, and I'm quite happy with it. On the surface, the changes seem small, but performance has been greatly increased.

UMaine Presque Isle. It's embarrassingly ugly at the moment, but it'll receive quite a face lift by the end of the summer.

My feeling is that you folks can do whatever you like. Unfortunately, my project over the summer (to re-design and create from scratch an entire university website) is going to keep me crazy busy, so I'll be unable to participate or help out by adding features to the forum. PayPal Donations go straight into the account where the hosting bill comes out of, so the number and size of any donations are of no consequence to me.

    Hit 100 Posts!

Congrats on the milestone Only 400 posts to go before you make "ATXaholics Anonymous" :D
  21. For the most part, I don't think Apple had to develop Windows drivers for much at all. Since moving to Intel processors, most of their hardware is no different from what you find in your average PC, aside from the pretty case they pack it all into. As for rebooting, that depends on whether you're using Boot Camp to dual-boot Windows / OS X or if you're using Parallels to run Windows as a virtual machine on top of OS X. The latest version of Parallels for OS X has a pretty slick feature called Coherence Mode.. check out the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKsW0v90zRg I can't comment on printing since I haven't tried myself, but as PC and Mac hardware become more similar, I imagine those quirks are working themselves out.

Like it or not, there are going to be ex-ATXers here using different software. I've got no way to make sure people are using ATX software, and even if I did I wouldn't exclude them from the community. Adding some extra forums is really no trouble and has no effect on my hosting bills, which is what your generous donations pay for. At least with a sub-forum, it'll be all that much easier for you to ignore the posts. If any of the smaller other-vendor forums explode and start consuming excessive resources, I may be forced to reconsider, however.
  24. You might want to try installing the latest MS Jet 4.0 service pack: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114/

I can set one up temporarily to see how it goes. If it takes off, I could leave it there, but if it stagnates, I may remove it. What's their website address?
