Since the tax year is young, install ATX 2011 on the new computer and copy the database folder from the old computer. On the new computer, open an existing client and resave it, then create a new test client and save it. Then install ATX 2012 on the new computer and roll a return that you didn't open during your 2011 tests. If that opens and you can make changes and then save, you should be OK. Roll over all the returns from 2011 and voila.

I have Arch, LLC form 1065 and Arch, LLC 1099misc files from 2011. If I click on "roll over manager", I only see the entry that uses form 1065 not the one that I created to issue 1099-misc to subcontractors. Can you roll over any of clients that don't use the regular forms (1040, 1065, 1120, etc)? I have no other issues with the program, in fact I have been able to roll over several clients and I have been able to create and prepare the efile file for several clients.

This is my suggestion to the original poster. Go to proseries and download their software for 2011 for free. Make a network installation and notice how fast or slow it is. By the way, was ATX 2011 fast? Is it still fast? Many things could be at fault here. The teaming of the NICs (please monitor the traffic with a snifter). Memory or powerwise, I don't see any problem with the server or workstations. Cat6 is perfect also. Have you installed according to the recommedations by ATX? It is my understanding that you first install on the server, then you install on the computers pointing to the first (server) installation and then you run the programs locally and access the database from the server. You seem to be running the program from the server and that could be the issue. Another thing to check is your batch file (that's where it tells me that you are running the program from the server). I think you want to run ATX similar to a Citrix server and that might be your issue. Have you thought about a Citrix Server solution? Is the domain controller on site and ready to authenticate the admin account? I would also disconnect the network from the internet and test with the AV disabled on the server and a workstation. Do you have a firewall within the network or do you have DMZ? Try checking the traffic on the firewall or router. Please share with us your finding.

One thing to keep in mind is that the EIC was designed to help people who live with little money. That should not be a problem when preparing their returns if you fill out the worksheet. Plus, remember that this person will get about 10K in refunds and that's also included on their yearly "money to spend".

Who said that we need W-2s to prepare tax returns? We need them for efiling, correct? Who said that we need 1099s to prepared and efile tax returns? AS LONG as the client has accurate records of what he made world-wide, we should be able to prepare their return. Tax Payers have the choice to efile, correct? What's wrong with HRB to advertise that they can prepare returns with paycheck stubs? Thanks,
-
Paper file? We are required to efile.

I will deal with this issue next year. For now, I will use 2011 to print labels. I know I will miss the new technological advances that ATX 2012 offers but I will be OK.

Each time you go to the Internet you have the risk to be hacked. No one denies that. No matter what browser you use to navigate. ALSO, each time you cross the street at a traffic light, you risk to be hit by a car. No matter what means you use to cross.

Jack, I customize the name field on 1040 when depedent's name is long and Humberto Ramirez-Hernandez is trancated on the print out and I don't want the tax payer to be calling because I didn't type the whole name. I have noticed that other software companies automatically change the font to a smaller size and the print out is complete. Can you ask for that?

How about when the undelete command was purchased by Microsoft and released with DOS 5? If I am not mistaken it was purchased from Symantec.

What matters is when the distribution is released from the administrator. In any event, you will get the 1099-R with the date of the distribution then you compare and pay penalty or not.

Thank you for the info. I am going to visit Sears when shopping. I have not been there for a while but I will start going back.

Meeting your EITC Due Diligence in a nutshell (updated)
Pacun replied to ILLMAS's topic in General Chat
Jack, I have never seen an EIC tax payer who sends his taxes to be prepared in another state. I have seen that they drive 4 hours to NY from the DC area to have them prepared but they never mail their documents. (I think they believe every one else steals, except themselves.) Jainen, I agree with you, Schedule C fraud is more than IEC fraud and I am talking about net dollars. Why is EIC fraud more newsable than Schedule C? This is my anology. If you don't see the money, you don't miss it. In other words, if I have to pay 6K in taxes, it will not hurt me if all that amount if withheld from my paycheck. It will really hurt me if I have to pay 4K (less) from my checking on April 15. Using that principle, EIC fraud is more newsable than Sch C fraud because the IRS is giving money to people that the IRS already collected, whereas Sch C money was never seen by the IRS and, as a result, it hurts less. -

I agree with you John. The risk is high and the burden to document everything makes it a "not so attractive business venture". In the past, I have turned away many schedule C tax payers. Not necessarily because I don't trust them but because I want a piece of mind (and that's the way I have decided to run my business). I think I will be happy when EIC tax payers don't return next year because I will have to spend so much time in the interview. Do you know how many ways I have to translate (to Spanish) and interpret the questions asked by the due diligence? That's without mentioning that most of the time I don't get an answer tto the question but instead I get a whole story about other tax preparers not asking so many as I do. As someone mentioned, we have been doing this for the last two years, but I just found out that another tax preparer around the corner has been audited about 3 times and the IRS has found nothing wrong. I wonder how you will feel when you have your "not so smart" client when the IRS agent has pulled a chair next to you and the agent is auditing your interview! -

Thank you Marco for posting. If the penalty is $500, I wonder what the formula is for charging our services. Let's say that you prepare a return for someone who uses the standard deduction with three children and makes $50K. How much will you charge that person? How about if that person makes less than that and will get EIC for $300? How much will you charge this person since you have to deal with EIC due diligence. -

I am going to do payroll for my friend and his employee. The C corp pays online and the payroll company has access to the corp's log in info and pays on line and the money is taken out from my the corp's checking account. The question, should my friend call the payroll company and ask for the log information and give that information to me or should he create a new account? Any other payroll info that you want to share will be useful since this is the first time I will be preparing payroll.

I think you are in compliance. I think the wrong address is probably the issue here. I think you should call the IRS. Depending on your situation and how deligent the H and R block preparer was (which I doubt because neither him or you noticed the wrong address), those $370 could potentially make your return and your parents' return invalid based on the fact that you could probably or potentially have had provided more than 50% of your o.... I think you should check this area with your supervisor or your tax preparer.

Lion, you are right. RTRP is just like an unenrolled preparer used to be... he can only represent its own returns at certain levels before the IRS.

Heartbreaking--NY court: Lap dances are not art and are taxable
Pacun replied to Elrod's topic in General Chat
MAS, how come you have so much information about lap dancers? I think you are stress free while you gather this information. -
Can you transfer the original return to the other computer? I wonder if your computer is the issue.
