  1. At least in my local county property tax records, one could make a good faith estimate by looking at the property tax bill. Those bills here allocate an amount to the building and an amount to the land. I suggest if your bills are similar, it might be helpful to look at the relative percentages currently and apply those to the original purchase price. It may not be perfect but I believe it's better than what you now have.
  2. A bloomin' murricle has occurred! I had 3, count 'em, 3 1099's accepted today after having filed them Feb. 22nd! Of course, the ones validated Jan. 30 and Feb. 20 are still hanging around as are the 941 from Feb. 18 and EF94XREG from Jan. 25. I looked into the Rejection errors for each and get the notice that there are no rejection errors. So what's wrong with these poor things? I am a "lady in waiting" (no snide comments, please, just eat your frikkin bananas).
  3. Thanks so much. I had no idea. Now the executor will have to do some research to get the data for this. All he provided was the 1099. By the way, on the 2006 return for the deceased (he died before it was filed), the POA was listed sort of in the place of the spouse. It was just on a label, not in a software produced form. I'm thinking that might be ok for a paper filed return but would look funny. What do you folks do?
  4. Now THAT is a great question! I have to say that my recent encounter with CS was actually reasonable although I was not pleased with the explanation that some 13,000 1099s were, in fact, accepted by IRS, including the 4 I called about, but ATX had to manually acknowledge them with no time frame in sight. There is also no way that I, independently, could verify IRS acceptance. It's going to be a looooong season...
  5. A deceased client has received a 1099-LTC with Box 1 amount of $10,000+. The form says that if the payments are on a per diem basis, the amount excluded is limited. The box "Reimbursed amount" is checked so I am assuming that there were corresponding expenses paid and that these payments are not taxable as under an insurance policy. There doesn't seem to be an input form for 1099-LTC; should there be? Should this just be reported under Sch A medical? The deceased otherwise has no Sch A items. This is my first but I suspect there will be many more in the next several years. I just wish I could afford it!
  6. Click on 4562, Pages & Worksheets, Detail Report, under Type on upper left choose Next Year Fed. You can then print the page. If you have more than one activity, make sure the one you want is selected.
  7. I've reconsidered and would like to change my Yes vote to a No.
  8. Okay, what IS the secret? I still have 6 out there, one from January. As I wrote in Chit Chat, there is always tomorrow, tomorrow, it's only a day awayyyyy
  9. I am sooooo envious! I still have 6 out there in neverland, one from January. Maybe tomorrow, tomorrow, it's only a day awayyyy.
  10. Whoopeeee! At 11:26, 11:34, and 11:36, about a half hour after my post, I received 3, count 'em, 3 1099 acks! There is an efile god...
  11. I have 8 validated returns, 6 1099's, a 940 and EF94XREG, going back to Jan. 17. I've emailed, called tech support and waited. Next Monday I pull the plug, print and mail.
  12. It's ORIGAMI. We'll improve your spelling yet...while you improve my tax knowledge!
  13. And I thought it was just MY clients! Who knew?
  14. If the tax withheld is 1.2% of the Local wages shown, you needn't do anything. From the Evendale website " How do I know if I am required to file a return? All Village of Evendale residents are subject to the tax and are required to register with the Tax Department and file an annual Evendale Income Tax Return. All non-residents with income taxable to the Village of Evendale that was not fully withheld by an employer are required to file an Evendale Income Tax Return." So, if he was fully withheld, he owes nothing and is not required to file. Nearly all employers in the taxing municipalities fully withhold the appropriate amounts and filing is not required unless there are other potentially taxable issues. If he was self-employed while living in Evendale, he would have to file and pay tax on net profit, for example. My guess is that he is fine without filing.
  15. Okay, for fun I tried to find where to update my information to see if I could change my password now and get it over with. So on the Contact information page, I see my login and 8 little stars for my password. Son of a gun! My Jan. 8 password is 12 characters long. The 8 stars is my very old password. Next I tried to search around for other new info and looked into E-File status, going where I've never gone before (fear and trembling). I tried myself and couldn't be found so tried a client who had been accepted. That info came up nicely. At the lower right corner was a help prompt and something to click on about a database. Curious me, I clicked on it. Next thing I get a message saying that my email (Huh?) was sent and I should check on the Taxwise Ack.../InterviewPlus... Sooooo, I just sent what is to be sure an unanswered email asking about this and how do I check it when I am not a Taxwise customer. I also asked if I, as an ATX customer, am unworthy. I am still waiting, 24 and 48 hours now, for earlier email responses to why, if the 94X issues are resolved, I still have 2 validated 94X's sitting around waiting for an ack. Hmmmmm....
  16. Uh oh, I guess my time is about up, then. I just checked my secret password file and see that I changed it Jan. 8. How soon we (I) forget! I suppose I will be in the same situation come Feb. 22! Hopefully I will survive...
  17. I've been intrigued and puzzled by all the problems so many have been having with MyATX. I finally figured out why I have not experienced any of this. On my "Favorites" list in IE, I have ATX KB. I do check there first whenever I have a problem to avoid the dreaded tech support phone marathon. And I check the other tabs about efiling and forms, etc. Well, I realized today that I never logged out after making it a favorite. It seems since I am always logged in, I have somehow bypassed the 45 day new password requirement and who knows what other issues. Now, don't tell anyone at the gates of ATX or I am screwed! But this just might be something that could help someone else. And please don't tell me if I am violating every rule about the principle of logins, etc. This works for me!
  18. I tried to use Adobe Pro, which worked fine last year, and got a message that something with ATX was copy protected or something. So I used pdffactory and all went perfectly. Goblins abound!
  19. Thanks to everyone with your suggestions, sympathy and related stories. It feels good, in a weird way, to know that I am not alone and it isn't just my imagination. It's now going to be locked when I'm here, at least, and we will look into a better solution this weekend.
  20. I work from my home office. Just now, within a span of about 5 minutes, my garage door opened. Looked around and saw nothing. This happened about a week ago, too, but only once. Soooo, I'm getting nervous that someone is messing with my mind (easy to do) and/or checking to see if their door opener works on other garages. That would make it easy to enter when I'm away or snoozing. If anyone knows how to reset the code or has other suggestions about this issue and would share them, I would be most grateful.
  21. Thanks for your sacrifice for us all being on hold. I am breathing a bit easier now. But isn't it strange to get a rejected message for a return that wasn't rejected? The English language isn't what it used to be.
  22. I got the same message and am baffled. I suppose it is another glitch to be resolved, hopefully soon!
  23. Thanks so much for the insight and guidance. Would you be my mentor when you have calmed down? I have consulted a number of resources including PPC's Specialized Industry Tax Guide but the specific issue of volunteers receiving tips from customers of a family business was not addressed. And clearly I am not a labor law expert. I called the Department of Labor to get a definition of "employee" as recommended by the Workers' Comp person. I was given a citation of Chapter 29 Section 785, "something, something suffer or permit to work something, etc." I could not find this but I think he was saying that a volunteer is considered an employee if permitted to work. I have shared the comments with this client and have sent to consult with the SCORE mentor they have met. I believe they will no longer be using volunteers as it appears those good intentions are fraught with problems. This business is clearly not as easy and straigtforward as I, for one, would like. I cannot change what happened in the past. I was seeking advice on how to handle and report the historical financial transactions. They did not come to me in advance to ask how to handle anything. They presented details of what took place. I was asking for advice/suggestions on the best way to report income. Anyway, thanks again for your helpful suggestions. The wise words of experts are always appreciated; that's why I come here regularly.
  24. Hello, New restaurant client, struggling (aren't they all) had a few family members and friends volunteer to serve customers. They received no wages but some tips and reported to owners. One received over $900! How is this reported for 941 purposes (if at all)? Since they weren't employees, they wouldn't receive W-2's, would they? They weren't 1099ers, I should think, either. Thanks for any insight. I will be calling the state for unemployment and worker's comp reporting. I don't see this issue addressed in their documentation, either.
