  1. Just name it 2nd qtr and go forward. Try it and ignore the red warning. If you are not e-filing them, there is no issue.
  2. I am attending this seminar with 4 lady tax preparers with smartphones. I am TOAST!
  3. Can't hide for a second on here!!!
  4. He rode up on his unicorn and told the truth...
  5. We require a copy of the account statement from the college. You can only claim amounts PAID in any given year. 1098-T information is worthless.
  6. For him, you are way too cheap!! Add an aggravation factor.
  7. Cancer should have known better than to pick a fight with Marilyn!!
  8. How about making your fees for filing them late the same as the IRS penalties?
  9. How about the phrase... "...did know or should have known..." in Circular 230?
  10. It is a phishing e-mail. Delete. Do not respond. We have 7 different company e-mails here at the firm and all have received the same e-mail. If you wish to incur another computer cleanup and virus removal, then click on the link.
  11. I would like to hear if anyone has had to defend the filing status and verify marriage or lack of during an audit. Anything else we say has no value. Until it passes the scrutiny of audit, we cannot say it is "acceptable" or "accepted."
  12. Not fraudulent. Before this latest ruling, legally married same-sex couples were (still are) required to filed Federal returns as MFJ or MFS. If a same-sex couple were legally married in a state that recognized it, then move to Ohio, the State of Ohio did not recognize their marriage, so the tax returns for the State had to be single. Traditional married couples had to file State of Ohio with the exact same status as their Federal return. If MFJ on Federal, then MFJ was the only option on State. This ability to file married for Federal and single for State of Ohio is a major tax break for the same-sex couples due to the structure of the tax tables in Ohio. Many couples would benefit filing separate or single with the State but file joint with the Federal. Before the latest ruling, this was an unfair tax advantage given to same-sex couples. With this latest ruling, the unfair advantage has been removed and now same-sex couples must use the same status on State of Ohio as Federal. For the record, there were already lawsuits being prepared by groups representing traditional married couples in Ohio to demand equality. Now it is a moot point.
  13. In Ohio, this ruling eliminates the requirement of filing same sex couples as single for State of Ohio return, and married for Federal. This was an unfair tax advantage for same-sex couples as OH says you must file the OH return with the same status as the Federal. Now the playing field here in OH is level again.
  14. There is only one of those addresses that is proper per USPS. USPS protocols are only for the ADDRESS. When I enter a corporate name, I use the official corporate name. No more, no less, no confusion, and easy standard to comply with. But again, resistance to proper protocols is strong. No one wants to take the time to think.
  15. Apparently you are not up to speed on USPS protocols. No punctuation at all. Problem solved. On tax forms, there should be no punctuation other than a hyphen in a hyphenated name. NO PUNCTUATION and use approved abbreviations. Again, problem solved. All will be the same if protocols are followed.
  16. If you follow the USPS recommend address protocols for ALL instances of using addresses, they will all be the same. I was taught proper address protocol in High School. Although USPS has changed some of them slightly, the basic rules are still the same. This is NOT rocket science. With us, as professionals, dealing with important and personal financial situations for our clients, I believe that knowing the proper protocols for addresses would be something that a professional should know, keep updated on, and utilize at all times. This is NOT rocket science. Working at the firm for 11 tax seasons, (over 30,000 returns) and at my private practice for 18 years (over 2,000 returns) we have collectively seen 3-4 instances of CP148A. Rant Over.
  17. I volunteered as well. They will probably not ask me to help. I told them I wanted the full working version BEFORE it was released so I could beat it up. Did that for TY 2013, and I think I irritated too many people in the hierarchy of ATX such that my name is "poison" in their ranks. I suppose being a very vocal person to them about the many areas that have been promised to be fixed for four tax years now, that are still a problem, is not the kind of people they want participating.
  18. Patience young grasshopper, patience...
  19. Two reasons come to mind. Apathy and incompetence. We see so much of those things when dealing with State tax departments.
  20. I always customize master forms on all states to mark that box. In fact, I do not know of any state where the marking of the Federal 3rd party authorization is automatically acknowledged or carried over to the State. My thoughts are that by statute, the State box must be marked independently.
  21. I see a much bigger threat to those tax offices that do not have on staff someone who is current with modern proper system security. This is an absolute necessity, especially if you have an internet presence. Like it or not, all offices need a Geek, either as a tax preparer as well, or just an I.T. professional. I grow weary of hearing: "I am old school and I am not changing" as if it is a badge of honor. Actually, it indicates a lack of initiative to be the best at what we do, and embracing the changes that are happening almost weekly in our profession. Those "Old School" people can ride in the back of the bus while I, and others who are upwardly mobile, are driving the bus. Very soon, those in the back will not be able to even ride the bus and will be outside watching. <<<Rant Over>>>
  22. There are no words... The Supreme Court has usurped its constitutional powers just like our President has. The Supreme court is not to rewrite laws, but to rule on the constitutionality of them. Penalty now means tax. States now means Federal Government. God help us till January of 2017! It is a sad day for America.
  23. Your vocabulary is transcendent!
  24. I don't get that message. Not sure why you are getting it.
  25. I only have 17 years of efiling, but I have had the exact same lack of anyone ever asking for an 8879. At the firm, same thing.
