  1. the insurance reim is just that, a reimbursement. enter the expenses on sch A then see line 16 of the medical worksheet to record the reimbursemnt. The care givers are not employees of the children, if anything they are employees of the Mom but more info is needed such as are they paid directly or through an agency?
  2. if the parents paid for the schooling housing doesn't that make it a second home and thus the student did live in the parents home.
  3. Mark your choice on the option tab of the letters
  4. it that why political contributions aren't deductible?
  5. DID YOU mix up survivor and deceased?
  6. that box wasn't checked but i guess substance over form applies. -Thanks
  7. I don't know why you would even enter the 1099 since thats only part [usually] of a taxpayers income. As Don said, i only enter them if there is withholding. I realize the irs wants us doing their imput for them but even if a 1099 is lost in the mail, the income still should get reported.
  8. and the government doesn't match the 1098? i thought they were based on when paid like a mortgage 1098, and not based on due dates or applicable dates etc.
  9. Nope, just someone who hates to owe money and pays bills when received. [except mine of course, i get paid out]
  10. client paid tuition for 2010 and 2011 both in 2010. the 1098-t reflects this. the total amount is way over any limitations. Can i take the 2011 tuition on this years return? Seems like the client gets screwed by paying the tuition for 2011 early in December 2010.
  11. Agree with George M, i have never sent copies to other states since i started efiling. I have some returns that file in over 10 states too
  12. They are not added to basis on a refi, the are amortized over the life of the mortgage, i just know what code to use, i have always just lumped it with the 461 code but was wondering if there was another to use
  13. SSSH Jainen what is it 7 in the morning where you are? don't you ever sleep?!?
  14. what code do you use when amortizing refi costs? they are not just points but also legal, title and other charges.
  15. NO paid schooling does not qualify once the child is eligible for public school, in your case yes it applies
  16. I Believe a lease buy out is a capital transaction since he is selling an intangible right to occupy the apartment. also any moving costs can be used as an offset as well as any of the money that represents payment for leasehold improvements, [carpet etc.]
  17. opening might take a while if you have it set to check each time for updates, i manually check 1 or 2x a day only. otherwise mine has been pretty quick this year. Saving is about 5 seconds a return.
  18. is it the 2% reduction for 2011?
  19. yes the amount that he paid taxes on. but personal loses arent deductible....did he hold these as an investment?
  20. THIS Election is available in atx in there long list of pre-prepared elections. its a great feature
  21. POSTED ON THE ATX SITE: Posted 5:30pm Problem: You are attempting to send efiles, update a form, or update your program and get an error message: "Transmission error: an error has occurred" or "update failed" after connecting to the servers. Solution: Please try again in about 30 minutes. For efile, you will likely download your acks, but you cannot send us efiles. Our primary internet provider had an outage. Our systems failed over to our secondary provider. The ATX services did not fail over as gracefully as normal.
  22. if you get a W-9 from everyone you pay then you have the info needed......really too much extra paperwork
  23. there has been talk of making it a requirement that any finacial emails be encrypted, not sure if its just a NY thing or federal but it is coming
  24. BETTER TO just say TAXES incase you ever send out just a state or a payroll etc
  25. you can purchase encripted flash drives that need a password to open. and after 3 attemps it automatically erases the data. We have a lot of clients in the same industry and even in the same buildings in NYC so a staff might visit 3-4 a day collecting quickbooks data etc. it would be a disaster to leave one clietnts data at anothers location. We use Ironkey that was developed for the military and came out about 5 years ago 2 gig wqas about $100. i know they have cheaper ones out now.
