  1. When I get email docs, I save them all to the client's current year folder, as they come in. And if the email contains any useful info, I print the email to a PDF in the same folder. Good naming conventions help keep this files organized (22 W2 X company, 22 1099R Z corp, etc.). You can merge them all into one PDF and rearrange the pages, or work with them as separate PDFs. All PDF viewing software has some ability to type on the PDF. I usually put a dot with pen tool by clicking or type some text or paste in an adding machine tape, like we used to do with actual tape and actual adding machine tapes. Electronic is far superior. I also draw arrows or ovals or rectangles around important data to make it easier to see for when I'm reviewing a return. I was always holding paper docs up in one hand to read them, now I just have them on another monitor, and zoom in as needed to read smaller text. Used to use a magnifying glass. And if a document is searchable, I can copy/paste EINs, SSNs, or amounts from the docs into the software. I prefer to copy/paste ID#s and addresses so there aren't any typos. And I just convert photos of docs to a PDF, after cropping, resizing and enhancing if needed. This work replaces going through paper records, removing staples, rearranging, etc. Clients who do better jobs of organizing and properly scanning their records, are rewarded with lower fees.
  2. No matter how you create a tax law, there will always be winners and losers, due to the complex makeup of the population.
  3. I use Kofax(formerly Nuance) to make a PDF into a fillable form. Sadly, however, those ATX Y/N check boxes are not square, so Kofax interprets them as a text field instead of a check box. I asked ATX to make them squares, but that will never happen. So clients have to Tab between the boxes and type an x.
  4. Sneakernet or are the other computers in your office networked to your computer?
  5. You can put ATX on as many computers as you want, but you can only login to ATX up to the number of licenses you own, and each user can only be logged in on one device at a time.
  6. Does the IRS even have forms that are laser printer compatible? They always used to be on crappy paper with perforated tear strips and therefor unusable.
  7. The problem is websites with differing requirements (uppercase, lowercase, number, special character) so that you can't just use 4 words, you have to do some substitutions. Websites may be well intentioned, trying to make you use more complex passwords, but they should all drop those requirements and instead require longer passwords. I've encountered sites where password can't exceed 8 characters.
  8. Not one that I use: J@ck@jwuth2f@p0w = Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. I like it because it's mnemonics except for the first word, Jack. I find all of these easy to remember.
  9. It's not like this isn't a societal thing. I've seen many offices with passwords on sticky notes attached to computers, and poor passwords are very popular. Longer passwords are better, and they can simply be a phrase or random words, with some substitutions of symbols and numbers (Allalongthew@tcht0wer).
  10. Well, in my experience, way more CP2000s are wrong than right.
  11. Be honest. CP2000s often miss things, and I hate it because it makes responding more complicated.
  12. Congrats and welcome to world of retirement, where oddly you might find that you still don't have time to do all the things you thought you would. At least, I haven't. But it has been less than a year for me. But do enjoying sleeping in!
  13. https://www.irs.gov/publications/p527#en_US_2020_publink1000219042 "Temporarily" usually means less than a year, even though the code is rarely specific on this, but you might want to search court cases on extended idle periods for a rental. Elections for unimproved and unproductive real property must be made annually. I'm not aware of any requirement that it must be made the first year.
  14. If he doesn't have a balanced set of books in some bookkeeping software, any errors are on him. No clue on the alleged credit.
  15. And you better prepare the IRS insolvency worksheet before you file because the IRS will ask for it. At least, they used to. I'm not sure if attaching the worksheet will avert a notice or not. And keep all the bank statements, etc. supporting the asset bases and liability amounts, on the day before the the debt was cancelled. Was the 1099-C timely or several years later, like often happens.
  16. Drake doesn't have a separate state K1 input? Just a column on the federal?
  17. It's all fun and games until you come out and find a dozen goats standing on your car.
  18. Or call support. They're not that busy this time of year.
  19. Tell them that they either need to pay you to keep the books up to date, or hire a third party bookkeeper that you can train and work with. And tell them that it'll be cheaper than paying all those penalties and interest and their lives will be less stressful, which is priceless. I don't know about changing to a fiscal year for an S corp but IIRC, you need a valid business reason and/or a deposit to compensate the government for deferred revenues.
  20. It's either there on the Elections form or you can use a blank election to type whatever you want.
  21. Maryland only requires officers to be listed for corporations. LLCs are not required to list owners or officers.
  22. I download all available articles of incorporation or organization and any subsequent filings from the state websites, if available. Fortunately, Maryland has a great website for this and most of my clients are in Maryland, but I have had some luck downloading from other states. Also, husband and wife are considered as one for taxes as they relate to stock or partnership holdings, whether the holdings are in their joint names or not. And an officer is an assigned roll, not an ownership roll. Anyone can be named an officer and you were doing that. The lawyer's being a real jerk.
  23. If they aren't in the return, simply add those forms. Or am I misunderstanding your question?
  24. Not if you download just the driver (.inf) and not an executable file containing the driver.
  25. You can rollback the driver in windows or download an older driver.
