  1. Congratulations Joan.....and, yes, it is strange that we have not heard from JB. When we do; I sincerely hope the news is good.
  2. Just since I posted the message about the discount, I received a call from Taxslayer. They are definitely recruiting. I will take a look at it for future reference; but am wondering how he knew that I used ATX this year.
  3. Just received an e-mail from Taxslayer Pro offering a $200 discount on complete program. However, as Joel said, I,also, always intended to stay with ATX if they stayed with us.
  4. Quickfinders page 6-6 (under strategy) says "Do not include any amount deducted on line 29 of Form 1040 in figuring the medical expense deduction on Schedule A." Pub 17 on page 142 says "See chapter 6 of Pub 535, Business Expenses for more information." This was a very good question though I have never had an instance when it wasn't more beneficial to take it on line 29; generally because of the 7.5% limit on Schedule A.
  5. I'm betting that if anyone can do it, Julie CAN.....she has been a longtime supporter of her husband's art career and appears to be extremely knowledgeable in her field. Working together, they should do well. (Incidentally, I have a California artist as a tax client, but, of course, it is not Julie's husband).
  6. I renewed Max today. I knew all along that I would renew if it was offered. However, because I respect the opinions and comments of KC and others on this board; I feel much better and more optimistic about it now. TRX called me again today about 5 minutes after I had renewed. Samantha said, "Since we see that you downloaded the program.....etc." The thing is that I never downloaded the program as I never had DSL until two weeks ago. Samantha promised to send me a disk so I could take a look at it. The other thing is that Kathy promised to send me a disk over a month ago and it never arrived. If Samantha delivers, it will go on the pile with the rest for future reference. I feel confident that ATX is everything that I need and more. If they continue, I will be happy as generally the only support that I need is this forum and my research materials. If ATX goes down, I will probably retire. Just thought I would come forward as I have not revealed my intentions to the board; but have been very carefully reading all of the comments that the rest of you have made.
  7. You are probably right KC; on all counts. Perhaps it is just getting old (along with me). I did increase rates pretty much across the board this year. Like John, some were with the hopes of getting rid of certain clients. I had a few that had to come in and pick up their unfinished work because they were not willing to pay until they got their refunds. DUH! I found collections to be a big deal this year. I did consider not continuing for 2008 at all until ATX announced the renewal and a lot of my faithful encouraged me. Now, the economic stimulus calls are "off the wall"! I am pleased with the Income that I generated this year; but I also know that I earned every penny of it and will either have to cut back; turn down or get some help.
  8. Actually, I often use those "horrible" vertical input columns for W2 entry. Habit or preference, I am not sure. In all cases, I agree with all of you as to the improvement of the quality over the years. I now have 9 years on my hard drive. And, yes, the price increase has not been out of line with the added quality. However, some of us small home office sole preparers have to say "enough already". How much more can our small market bear? (And, I always did like that roar of the tiger on startup.)
  9. Absolutely! I am staying here. I go over there to check from time to time but as others have said; nothing changes much. Leaving this board for that one is similar to going from High School to Grade School. I would be willing to help them out, but very few of the questions there have been nothing more than basic. Eric saved us when our ship went down. Why would we abandon now.

    ATX Service

I have all of my disks as well as floppies from Parsons. Remember those couple of years when some of us ATXers were sending copies of disks all over the country to anyone who asked for one?. This was with the blessing of "The Company" before they started offering the $20 back year disks.
  11. Yes, isnt it strange how many working people are only getting $300 (myself included). Also, people on extension who are getting refunds are in absolutely no hurry to get their information in. I find it hard to understand and wouldn't you think that they would be worried that the government might run out of $300 and $600 stimulus checks?
  12. Pretty distressing stuff.!! What else will come out before the May 31 deadline for early renewal? Am beginning to wonder if I will use ANY program next year. Am finding it hard to focus on completing extensions.
  13. I also have the slowest speed; but is amazingly faster than dialup. We were also told by Verizon that we would never have it, but it is coming in (basically through the back door) as they have a "secret" switching station in our area. I was all set to go with Verizon when I discovered that my ISP had the service (Juno) which allowed me to keep the same address, etc; plus I have liked their email format for years and have even bought stock in the company. BUT, I never knew what I was missing until now.
  14. I hope I never have to. After only four days, I am living in fear that they are going to "take it away". Of course, I don't expect to get much work done for a few days. Thank you all for understanding.
  15. Many of you have heard me say often over the years that nothing other than dialup service was available to me in the small portion of the suburban (rural) area where I live. WELL......last week I was checking around and found out that my dialup ISP was offering DSL and that I qualified for it. Still don't know why because none of my neighbors qualify as yet. However, I have it up and running as of Thursday night and it is wonderful. The installation was flawless and so far so good. I was able to update ATX in the blink of an eye whereas I used to have to walk away; get ready for bed, cook a meal or something while the download took place. I know this doesn't mean much to most of you; but to me it is a windfall and a great occasion.
  16. Of course, we will pray for you. My husband and I are in our 48th year. God Bless you and your family.
  17. Julie, I thought it was really nice seeing your "real" picture. As we go back a long way together and I know of what you speak about the old board; I have had my share of darts and arrows too. It always "seems" that there is at least one person who is out to make you look wrong (whether this is real or imagined). I am not savvy enough to know how to upload a picture of anything so I admire anyone who can. And, I always admired that you used your entire address as a sign off on all of your posts. Anyway, keep the picture. I am just a pink glob that I guess is supposed to signify a woman. The main issue here is the strength and knowledge of the posts and how much they help me and others as well.
  18. I got one last year wanting me to merge with them as (hidden threat) they were planning on opening an office in my area. (rural). This year I got the same one as you, Eli, offering either the franchise or the possibility of purchasing my business. Sorry, it's not for sale. Also received one last year from Liberty Tax, but nothing so far this year. I don't advertise so they must be getting the names from the IRS list of local e-filers.
  19. I am 100% with Julie in recommending Medlin. Check it out at www.Medlin.com. Dennis, from Medlin is often on this board. It is very simple, very comprehensive and very inexpensive.
  20. No, it is not deductible on WI and is adjusted back on to WI income by using the Schedule I. As far as I could tell, the software did it automatically in every case that I had this year.
  21. Isn't the purpose of Like Kind Exchange to defer the gain. In that case, wouldn't the basis of the new camper be the full $23000 so as to defer the gain on the "sale" of the motorhome. Anyhow, I don't think you have a like kind exchage here, you have an adjustment of basis on the new camper because you did not "sell" the motor home, but traded it in. Therefore, the adjusted basis of the new camper would be $15000. But, don't take my word as gospel as my brain seems to have turned to mush in the past couple of days.

    TRX Pro

I got an email from them today asking me if I had downloaded the software. Told them I have dialup and cannot download it. They just emailed back and said they are sending me a demo disk. Also got an email from TaxSlayer today. Kinda makes you wonder how they all get access to our email addresses.
  23. Greed will bring them in. Had a client whose son had not picked up or paid for his 2007 Return. I had amended 2004, 2005 and 2006 for the self-prepared client. He didn't take the Retirement Savings Credit. Had no idea what it was. Anyhow, I told him he had to pick up and file his amendments by mail and that 2004 was going to drop off at midnight on the 15th. I think his refund was $279. Well, Mom finally showed up yesterday; paid for her amendments and the son's return. I told her that I wasn't going to attempt to amend any of his back returns because he wasn't very responsible about how he handled this year. Guess what! When ack came back for son; he had a nice big I debt indicator code. No wonder he was in no hurry. He knew he wasn't going to get the refund anyway. It sure gets OLD sometimes.

    ACKS

I just filed my first extension which had two states. It went through fine and the last ack I had out there (from yesterday) came back on the same transmission. Fed came this AM; state just came now. So there is hope out there.
