  1. Just received the following from the IRS. Dear Tax Preparer, The Return Preparer Office is changing the renewal cycle for all PTINs to a calendar year renewal. Even though you got your PTIN before the end of 2010, it will not expire until December 31, 2011. Open season for 2012 PTIN renewal will begin in October 2011. You will receive another message then reminding you to renew your PTIN before year end.

  7. I understand "new information" or a late K-1, but married in Sept 2010 and filing single for 2010. How is this justified?

  9. I, too, got a call yesterday afternoon from a client whose files were in the dead files, not literally. I haven't seen him since 2007 when I filed an extension for 2007. He wanted me to file an extension for 2010. He hasn't filed since 2007..oh, boy....in our discussion...by the way, I got married Sept 2010. Well, then we have to file either MFJ or MFS...He said no no single...how is this, I said. well, her tax preparer filed her single because I didn't have my stuff ready...how did he do this??? How do you file single when you are married? I suppose file single then amend later, but doesn't that admit the previous one was totally incorrect. Any thoughts?
  10. I wish I had more time to reply, but it is the season...on the 1099R input page, scroll down until you get to the pension/annuity area and start answering and filling in the blanks...use the simplied method...several questions you'll have to ask the client, but this should get you started, while on that page, go to support and get the publication that deals with this....
  11. Well, my client can't find his soon to be ex-wife to get her SSN. Married Feb 2010, never filed MFJ and so we are filing separately...I guess the best he can do is sign a letter stating that she disappeared. Any other thoughts?
  12. I have efiled two states at the same time with the federal. You need a tax preparer number for NY,,OH went fine without a designated number and CA doesn't need one either as long as you don't go over 10.
  13. I had this error this a.m. Is there a fix?

  15. My client is a railroad employee who was laid off last year. He drew unemployment(1099-G) from the US Railroad Retirment Board, Sickness and Unemployment Benefits Section. He also drew "other income" (1099) from the union. The union's letter to my client states "The is the amount of premiums you have paid on your policies from the dates issued to December 2010 is $3143. This is the amount that may be applied as a deduction for income tax purposes in connection with job insurance benefits paid to you in 2010. Any references pertaining to this would be appreciated.
  16. Same as Terry O...submitted 10 and received 10 ACKS...back to normal so it seems.
  17. Gettin' ready to roll.....this afternoon
  18. I am waiting for this form, too.
  19. The ATX software won't let me create an efile with a Schedule A. Does your ATX software let you? I am holding a stack of returns until I can create efiles.
  20. I tried to create about two hours ago and got the red warning that the Schedule A was not approved for efiling.
  21. According to what I am reading from a Edward Jones publication, the taxpayer may elect to defer the income into 2011 or split the income for 2011 and 2012 or include the income into 2010.
