Usually, it's not the zip code, it is the STATE that is the problem. A typo that changes MA to MS or vice versa, for example, is easy to make, and easy to overlook, too. I've sometimes caught myself putting in my state out of habit, too, when the employer's town name is the same as the name of a town in my state.

And please note that you do NOT change the code on the 1099R, you report is as received. You then add the 5329, and claim the exception to the penalty there. Doing it that way means no nasty letters from IRS later.
-
No real 'fix', but if you delete the 8879, then add it, the numbers should be the right ones, I believe. Might be easier than going in and actually changing the numbers, as all you need to do is delete that file then click the efile button to get the program to add another 8879.

Since you have no way of knowing whether the check was good when she got it, you have to assume that it was. She had the check, so unless it was dishonored in 2007, she has to report the income in the year she received the check.

Those are, in many cases, the people who built up our business, and in some cases still send us occasional new clients. So giving them a free ride on this is an easy decision.

Speaking of way too long, please don't include the way too long original quote with your nice pithy response, unless it is waaaaay down the page. And if you do include a quote, consider if you can trim the quote down to just the relevant part you are responding to.

If you send me a message telling me which one you want deleted, I will remove it for you.

The 'Billion' part is excellent, and would stand much better by itself. Second part is full of errors or half-truths.

How very true. They make the rules, they interpret the rules, and if they feel like it, they often ignore their own rules. But the next level up almost always 'rubber-stamps' the results. That is just how it is, and there is very little you can do about it.

Cyndi, if he gets the wooden flash drive covers worked out, I'll be eager to buy some of them. Please email me when that happens.

That link should be just what Tom needs. I'm not interested NOW, because I am way too busy, but later in the season I will be looking at them.

But it's not Tom's client, it's Ceintax's client. And I'd be willing to bet the idea of having it in her name was to enable them to bid on jobs as a minority business. Be that as it may, just because she did not give him a 11099 should not be the whole reason for denying that it was her business. Or if it was, then the income should have gone to the hubby. Here, she's left with the income, just not the expenses. That is crazy. It may be worth a try, but I'd be sure and get a retainer, Ceintax.

One winter morning a husband and wife in Denver were listening to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the snowplows can get through." So the good wife went out and moved her car. A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snowplows can get through." The good wife went out and moved her car again. The next week they are again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park...." Then the electric power went out. The good wife was very upset, and with a worried look on her face she said, "Honey, I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snowplows can get through?" With the love and understanding in his voice that all men who are married to blondes exhibit, the husband replied, "Honey, why don't you just leave it in the garage this time?"

I'm not going to take a position on how the IRS will finally come down on this, but I will say that if you do take the costs as 'start up' then you have to use the IRS rules for startup costs, and amortize over 15 years. The fact that the website will clearly change many times over the next 15 years would be an argument for direct write off. However, if you think about it, Cyndi, many 'start up costs' are for things that will change before 15 years are up. I personally think many of these really are 'advertising', and should be written off. However, if a business spends over $5000 on a website, the very fact that it was that major an issue, would be an argument for capitalizing it.

Just claim his interest that he paid. It's not a problem when you claim less than they reported, only when you claim more than reported. No need to send anything to Sirva. Just report his sale, based on his contract, on the D, and take the §121 exclusion if applicable.

Did you use the Vacation Home tab to allocate it? It's always worked for me.

I agree, this is return of capital, and you should reduce the basis accordingly. I'd show the income on Line 21 worksheet, then back it out on the blue lines at the bottom of the same worksheet. That should reduce the chance of a letter questioning why it was not included.
-
After you input the K1 info, then add the 6198, that is where you calculate the limitations. The program will keep up with any suspended amount, and roll it over to the next year. You enter the 6198 limitation amount on the worksheet section right after the Line 20 boxes.

Nope, you have it backwards. You put it first on the E, and when you put the percentage on the E, that form sends the remainder to the A automatically.

Cyndi is a member here already. You can send her a personal message, if you wish. Just click on the Members link at the top of the page, look her up, and then send her a pm. Her name on here is Alpha.

No penalty, however, it will delay processing the return until they get the W2s.

Last thing I want is any video, I want something I can read. I read much faster than any video talks, and can skip what I don't care about. Why the heck do they ignore their own Home page of the support link, where ATX used to post important news, with links built in, if needed? Now, they hardly ever put anything there, and when they do, it's more liable to be an ad for something they want to sell us, than info about the program or updates about forms, etc, which we actually NEED.

I get it too, so they are probably doing some server maintenance work. Sunday night is a logical time, since there is really NO good time this time of year, but perhaps the number of users trying to access at this time will be lower than most times.

On the input sheet, does it show the items it should in the section for the L items? Could it possibly be that you did not check the box at the top of page 4? Just trying to think of reasons it might not have the info it needs to print that......
