  1. Probably this is an illustration of WHY he's been unemployed for two years.
  2. Share that answer, please.
  3. I'm confused by your question, How does a lawsuit incur a casualty loss? Suggest you look at Pub 525 page 29, Court awards and damages.
  4. If this is a new retiree, a and c will be zero
  5. Have you looked at Pub 575? Or the worksheet at http://www.irs.gov/publications/p575/ar03.html#en_US_2013_publink1000227042 ?
  6. Bankruptcy, but do ask for the Financial Analysis Report. The IRS may know something the client hid from you, remember. While he can't bankrupt against taxes unless they are very old, it can give him time to pay it out over more time.
  7. Fried Pickles and ice cream.......is there something you are not telling us, Rita?
  8. And a good time was had by all, clearly.
  9. Frankly, for that big a difference, I agree with Dan. Was not aware of the passive loss issue.
  10. That is exactly what I reccomend you say. She may go elsewhere, or not, but the extension protects her options. She will probably go elsewhere net year, but if not, you can either fire her then or not, your call. Funny thing is, sometimes this sort turns into a good client, once they learn that YOU ARE IN CHARGE. I once had one like this, that I almost fired [and almost cursed out, something I almost never do] who ended up a personal friend as well as a good client.
  11. It's a fact, not a "forced rationalization". And this subject is one that I want everyone to be aware of. Because the one thing WE who do not live in Mass can do is make sure the story does not die the way they want it to, by posting about it on any group, and ask others to post, write letters, etc, so the heat stays on the politicians to stop ignoring this horrible abuse of this child by the government. NO education for over a year? NO visits from her family now, and only ONE HOUR PER WEEK before, with ARMED GUARDS present? As Cat said, "accused terrorist Tsarnev is incarcerated BY MASSACHUSETTS, and has been since the Marathon bombings last year. HE gets all the family visits he wants, medical care at HIS choosing, educations, religious visits, and more -- all at state expsense. This girl would see better treatment as an accused terrorist than as a "patient" under the care of Mass DCF." I repeat, the one thing WE who do not live in Mass can do is make sure the story does not die the way they want it to. And BTW, I couldn't care less what your opinion is. This is not about politics, this is about human rights and exposing this as the child abuse it is.
  12. I got married in Vegas, remarried that is. Don and I were out there for an IRS forum, in fact, and decided to do it as a reaffirmation of sorts. It was a lot more moving than I expected it to be, as I was just 18 the first time, so those promises involved meant a lot more after 35 years and raising 3 kids and all life had handed us over those years. I recommend it. But yes, Nevada does keep a record of it!
  13. That's one of the problems with not adjusting your fees at least a little every year, is that they come to think of it as a 'fixed' amount. In 10 years, almost everything has gone up, including many of our costs, like software, ink, utilities, etc. Now, if you had raised his bill $20 then given him a $10 Discount, not only would he probably be happier, you'd have $5 more.
  14. Or just tell him that 'rate' is a compilation of a lot of different calculations, and most differences involve rounding differences at each step, only the final number is carried out to that level. And that you will be happy to show him a worksheet detailing it, BUT not until May, and it will cost him $XXX due to the time required.
  15. Don't know for sure, but if you call them tomorrow [i just tried and they are closed now] at 212-713-8000 they should be able to tell you.
  16. Don't forget to double your normal fee!
  17. She should talk to an attorney. Of course, it may work out well, she may get extra SS Benefits, etc. But for sure she should not just ignore it. A steak and chocolate? It sounds like you deserve it.
  18. He called at noon, to cancel his 2 pm appt? Which was the second time? Let him beg, he does not deserve you, Joan. Tell him he can see you after May 15th.
  19. I agree, Rich. It's the one's who bought tax software and don't really know what they are doing who are "bad preparers". The ones filing phony deductions and imaginary kids using the same address for hundreds of returns are major criminals, and those need to be sent to prison for a long time. Where they could share a cell with the worst o their clients.
  20. My roses are blooming like crazy already. One positive thing about central CA. No winter at all.
  21. OK, my daffys and crocus were always the first thing to bloom.
  22. Washington, D.C. (April 2, 2014) By Michael Cohn The Senate Finance Committee plans to hold a hearing next Tuesday to discuss how to protect taxpayers from incompetent and unethical tax return preparers. The hearing will be led by the committee’s new chairman, Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., who took over after the departure of former Senator Max Baucus, D-Mont., who was recently confirmed as ambassador to China. In the hearing, senators are scheduled to “examine the risks to taxpayers from tax return preparers who lack proper expertise or engage in unethical business practices and discuss ways to protect consumers.” The hearing will be divided into two panels. Witnesses on the first panel are scheduled to include Internal Revenue Service commissioner John Koskinen, National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson, and Government Accountability Office director of tax issues James R. McTigue Jr. On the second panel will be H&R Block president and CEO William Cobb, Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners chair Janis Salisbury, Brigham Young University associate professor Dr. John Barrick, National Consumer Law Center staff attorney Chi Chi Wu, and Dan Alban, an attorney with the Institute for Justice who represented the three independent tax preparers whose lawsuit against the IRS succeeded in invalidating the IRS’s Registered Tax Return Preparer regulatory program. The hearing will be webcast at this link http://www.finance.senate.gov/hearings/hearing/?id=331dea1b-5056-a032-5215-1df389f40a67 starting at 10:00 am ET on April 8.
  23. This is a 3 Kleenex video, but so beautiful I just have to share it
  24. Done! Thanks for this link, Marco.
  25. No, today it's been every one I try. Not a big deal, just irritating. I'll email you the ones I was trying to post so you can see what the problem is, I know they should work.
