  1. Well, yes, that's what I meant. Prep in ATX, check them for errors with AccuWage, then log in at the SSA and file there. But that process puts a "Created" efile in the ATX efile manager, which then just sits there doing nothing. That's all I meant. But perhaps you actually fill the W-2's out online at the SSA. I like going through the error check first to make sure I haven't messed anything up or missed anything.
  2. Twelve pages (but nice colors!). I am reminded of bits from the MacNelly tax cartoon I've posted here before: Requested by the Department of Agriculture: How many talking chickens do you own? Names? Do any of them play the oboe? and Number of Parakeets subtracted from Gross Rotated Income (Plus Line 27 - unless greater than 12 miles) They forgot to address the issue of claiming pets as dependents, and the differing treatments of cats, dogs, and tree frogs. Yikes.
  3. What fabulous news!!! Congratulations to your daughter -- you must be so proud!
  4. I've been waiting for responses too, Pat. But I did recall from last year that they do take a while. W-2's never change from "Created" status, though, since they go through AccuWage and then are filed with the SSA and don't go through the EFC at CCH. (Is that enough acronyms for one sentence? Sheesh!)
  5. Mass de-coupled from the Feds years ago but maintained those old forms for base calculations. So the statutes read "the base for calculating XYZ is the result from the 1993 Form 1040 Line blah-blah calculation". I think it's 1993. Circa then, anyway. And not only is Mass. not exempting the first $2400 of UI the way the feds are, they are recapturing the COBRA subsidy as income as well. It's going to be fun getting those amounts from clients! Catherine
  6. One thing to keep in mind is that some states (MA for one) is NOT exempting that first $2400 from taxable income. I'm going to have to check flow-through numbers carefully, as I've seen plenty of instances with ATX over the years where numbers do NOT go where they're supposed to go. Catherine
  7. What I do is put the pdf's in the computer folder for the client. I open the pdf on one monitor and have ATX open on the other monitor. There is a company (Copanion, I believe) that makes a product called GruntWorx (someone here recommended them last year; possibly KC but don't quote me). You upload your bare scan to them, and they organize and tag it all by document type. All 1099-INT's together, all K-1's, etc. Catherine
  8. If you can pass the practice tests with margin, you can pass the SEE. Remember, the Gleim books use prior tests as their source material. Catherine
  9. It must be your charming smile!
  10. I used the Gleim books and CD and thought they were GREAT preparation. Work on them enough, and you'll start to find the mistakes in the prep materials (they use former exam questions, complete with the original mistakes). That's when you'll know you're getting the hang of it. I also really liked finding out that it was when I went back and re-visited a question that I got it wrong. That gave me the confidence to answer - move on; answer - move on, during the real test. I passed all four sections (four back then; three now) first try. And a number of those sections were on types of returns that I had never yet done in "real life" (corporates, fiduciaries, etc). Catherine
  11. Finally called them. Same # as for the 4419 -- 877-477-0572 (though it doesn't -say- so anywhere in Pub 1220). In case anyone else needs it.
  12. I have several 6847's to fax in, and for the life of me I can't find the number they get sent to. I've looked in my files, on my desk, online, at irs.gov -- no luck. It's really hiding from me. Anyone have it? Thanks, Catherine
  13. They take the cake. Several cakes, in fact. But no one would be eligible for EIC in that bunch. Thanks for pointing out a possible circumstance, though, as it's not one I would have thought up.
  14. kcjenkins, on 18 January 2010 - 03:00 PM, said: Reject Code 541 (7,368) -- When the filing status equals Single, HH or QW the age of the qualifing taxpayer must be older than the age of each qualifying child on EIC - or - When the filing status equals MFJ the age of the primary or secondary taxpayer must be older than the age of each qualifying child on EIC. And I am my own grandpaw.... I actually know a family (no one young enough to claim as dependents!) where wife is more than 40 years younger than husband and younger than all but -one- of husband's children. And that man's eldest daughter is married to a man almost 40 years younger than she is. Very weird family. NOT clients, thankfully.
  15. We've had all kinds of firewall issues here lately. My firewall took a snit at something and decided to ban ALL outgoing and incoming messages from several programs, and would not let me manually release them. In the end, I had to uninstall and reinstall the firewall and that seems to have worked. My daughter's computer just did the same thing a couple days ago and the same solution -- uninstall/reinstall -- was needed. Two different firewall programs, to boot. Go figure.
  16. Or use them instead of ice melt.....
  17. Good for you!! I'm still in the throes of W-2's and 1099's and haven't tackled any 1040 returns yet.
