Hi folks -- Some of you probably recall my request for advice a while ago with some elderly clients in their 90's. Well, the husband passed away last Thursday and I went to the funeral this morning. The widow was so glad that I was there, and I got a chance to meet her nephew with whom I'd had some dealings by phone. I declined to go to the cemetery or the lunch afterwards; as the only non-family-member it didn't feel appropriate to attend. Both widow and nephew have the name and number of an excellent attorney to help them through probate once they're ready to face that, and a "to do" list was faxed to the nephew and mailed to the widow. They'll be calling me once they're ready to turn to paperwork issues. But since folks here had offered help and support, I thought I should let you all know of this piece. Second client this year to pass. First one I'd never met, though -- worked through her daughter (also a client) who held POA, and I'd just done one return for her. We had a huge monstrosity of a console record player (monaural, way before stereo) that could play all those speeds. We only had 33's and 45's, but the other two settings were there. Sometimes we'd play something too slow or too fast on purpose because it was so funny. There was a big spindle cover to accommodate the 45's. And I do recall the little plastic inserts for 45's, too.

I mentioned a music album to a younger friend a couple of years ago. He interrupted and said, "You have albums?! My -parents- have albums!!" I let him live. Barely.

Sent to me by my cousin Norma (the graphics didn't paste in): Came across an interesting phrase yesterday. 'FENDER SKIRTS.' A term I haven't heard in a long time, and thinking about 'fender skirts' started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice like'curb feelers.' And 'steering knobs.' (AKA) ‘suicide knob,’ ‘neckers knobs.’ Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some older person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you. Remember 'Continental kits?' They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental. When did we quit calling them 'emergency brakes?' At some point 'parking brake' became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with 'emergency brake.' I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the 'foot feed.' Many today do not even know what aclutchis or that thedimmer switchused to be on the floor. Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the 'running board' up to the house? Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - 'store-bought.' Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy. 'Coast to coast' is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term 'world wide' for granted. This floors me. On a smaller scale, 'wall-to-wall' was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure. When was the last time you heard the quaint phrase 'in a family way?' It's hard to imagine that the word 'pregnant' was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company, so we had all that talk about stork visits and 'being in a family way' or simply 'expecting.' Apparently 'brassiere' is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just 'bra' now.. 'Unmentionables' probably wouldn't be understood at all. I always loved going to the 'picture show', but I considered 'movie' an affectation. Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure '60s word I came across the other day 'rat fink.' Ooh, what a nasty put-down! Here's a word I miss -'percolator.' That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with 'Coffee maker.' How dull... Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this. I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like 'DynaFlow' and 'Electrolux.' Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with 'SpectraVision!' Food for thought. Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening kids with castor oil anymore. Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most is 'supper.' Now everybody says 'dinner.' Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts.

I've actually had the opposite problem. A couple of the topics keep showing up with the little orange box for "new" posts -- and when I click on the box, it brings me to the last post, which I read (and which was marked as read) the last time I was online. It keeps happening with the same few posts, too.

The tax school I was at today said that sending the closing statement with the 8453 will not be allowed. Paper file return with HUD-1. One suggestion they gave was, if the client otherwise would have a refund that they are eager for, leave out the credit, e-file, then paper file an amended later. They also said that the IRS estimates up to 72% fraud on the $7500 home purchase credits, which is why they now require the HUD-1.

One concern I have about the S 510 (and similar) is that they aren't TWAIN compliant, and I think that means they won't work on a network. And that means that either I have to do all scanning myself, or the scanner has to hook up to Gwen's computer so she can scan for me (she's been my official scanner the last two seasons). Has anyone been successful in hooking an S 510 to a network?

Thank you!! I had been clicking on the word "reply". The old format had a bigger clicking area, I think. Combine that with a fussy mouse (trackball), and the times I tried I must not have been in quite the right spot. So I thought that facility was missing.

Eric -- I've noticed one thing that I miss from the prior format. Maybe there's something I've missed, and if so please tell me! We used to be able, in the topics page, to click on the list of "replied" to see who had replied. That doesn't work anymore that I can see. It was handy when checking to see if I had replied to a particular topic (but wouldn't have been the last one and therefore listed as last reply). Sometimes I don't remember if I sent in a reply that I'd meant to send, and the quick list was faster than going though all the responses looking for myself. I'm not narcissistic enough to enjoy that. :blush:

Thanks, KC. Just posted a much-abbreviated version on Facebook after sending the full shebang to my girls. Neither of them can -stand- the whole Twilight series (good for them!), but they should still know.

I did as well; FedEx dropped it off about an hour ago. It's the standard ATX; nothing says TRX about it at all. I haven't loaded it yet and probably won't until Friday at the earliest. I have total tax office (first time for more than Max) and we'll see how it goes. Catherine
