  1. Just get a new installment plan. They get automatically canceled if you file a balance due return and you have to get a new plan. I have clients that have to do this every year. It's hard to catch up sometimes.

  2. we pick and choose, usually the income amt per state is below their filing threshold and the refund would be less than our fees. Don't forget to take ht withholding on schedule A. Some of the states might be part of a composite return, read carefully, if so then you don't file but get to take the resident state tax credit.

  3. I do about the same as Mike and Lion. We pick and choose but let the client make the ultimate decision after explaining the client's exposure if ignoring to file. I have that little small voice in the back of my head with everyone of these though with the "what if this client had other income in that state that he conveniently forgot to tell me about?". The exposure lottery just took a bad turn. As an example, I did a client's return for several years before I learned he did business in another state. The type of business was in the veterinary area. Who would have thought that this Vet, who had an office in PA, would fly out to North Dakota once a month to do work there? No office in North Dakota. Just set up at one of the local farms and take care of every one in the area from there. You just do not ever know for sure. I guess I made too many assumptions and did not ask the correct questions. My point is, be very careful with the filing threshold issue. The rest of the story? I started asking the right questions and now we are filing in five states for this guy. Clients do funny things that defy logic. But that is what keeps this business interesting.

  4. Thanks for the replies. It sounds as if options are available and I will research when the paperwork arrives. This is a first for me in all my years of practice. Guess I've been pretty lucky with clients. There have been some wrinkles along the way but this is by far the most expensive situation. I took her on last year as she is engaged to a long time client who finally convinced her she would do well with professional assistance. Hope I don't disappoint! And hope I get paid... (I will, no worries, but it may be a while)

  5. However, if she cannot make payments (insufficient cash flow) definitely check out the OIC option.

  6. jmdaviscpa, thanks for referencing the KB # again and making it easy to find and uninstall again. From my list, that update came in again on 10/6, so about 2 weeks ago on my list. I also have my update settings to allow me to review the updates before installing.

  7. I lay it out for the client who almost always decides not to file state returns with tiny amounts and pay me for prep. Of course, I require resident state and any other NR that they would do withOUT the K-1; for example, I include the K-1 input in CT and NY for my NY commuters without even asking. I'm very clear on which states require them to file, how much I project their refunds to be in all states, and where losses now might help them when selling later in states. I make the client decide. I need to start putting that on paper over their signature. Mike: do you have a form they sign or a paragraph/bullet point in your engagement letter re NR state returns that you would share?

  8. Another "Thank You" to jmdaviscpa. I just shared that info with my tech support and he was happy to get it. He had actually called me because of the issue, just as I was reading that board. I was able to tell him which file to remove and he can use that for all the other clients who do not want Win 10. This board is awesome.

  9. I had an IRS reject (using ATX software) because the husband had an IP PIN and the wife, who supplied the tax info., did not know it. Husband called, gave me the number, refiled with no problems. It was not intutitive on where to list the IP PIN and the "jump arrow" did not take you to the place on the return to enter it.

  10. I think everyone should have an IP PIN. Then ID thieves would need two numbers to file fraudulent returns.

  11. Dear MsTabbyKats: You have my prayers for a full and swift recovery. I am very glad you found a good buyer so quickly; the last thing you need is to be worrying about a business. Take care of yourself, and keep posting here! We will support you, listen to you -- and you can take pot shots as those of us who have not (yet?) high-tailed it for the nearest faraway place from taxes. Margaret said everything else I would have said, and she said it better than I would have.

  12. I believe if you cancel your reserved copy (if you had reserved a copy) of windows 10, then uninstall KB3035583, and then hide KB3035583. you should not have a problem. Microsoft re-released KB3035583 not that long ago so I had to hide it twice. You uninstall updates at Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\View update history. You hide an update by right clicking and choosing hide.

  13. MsTabbyKats, Margaret expressed beautifully and exactly my sentiments in her post above. I wish you well on your journey through treatments, that it is without complication and is as pain-free as is possible, and that your return to full health is swift. I, too, hope you will keep in touch with us here even though you will no longer be practicing.

  14. Dear MsTabby Kats, I am so sorry to hear of this development. I certainly pray for the outcome predicted and congratulate you on your decision to step away from unneeded stress. How wonderful that things with your practice worked out so well and so quickly! Sometimes it seems this was just waiting in the wings and right choice. I do hope this doesn't mean we won't still be hearing from you. When you are back to normal, do let us know and let us support you on the journey. And let the buyer know of this great group, too. Hugs from afar...
