The IRS can't match K1s. They tried once and it was a spectacular failure. I doubt they've had the resources or the will to try again. So if you want to amend, do it. And if you want to wait and hear, that's up to you. I would never file a second return. I only do amended. And you don't have to wait 6 weeks. It will take the IRS 6 weeks to even look at it. Amended returns take months now.5 points

Someone over on reddit swabbed ATMs and had lots of nice bacterial growths in his sample dishes in no time at all. Gonna have to start carrying a pack of Lysol wipes wherever we go. Lysol kills bacteria and viruses.4 points

Write to your federal representative and Senator NOW! Equifax still has not notified those people who were victims and has not said exactly what information was stolen. Sure, "maybe" they got birthdates and SS#s, but did they get the personal data that Equifax has amassed about our personal and financial histories? Until we know exactly what was taken, on whom, the IRS must steer clear.4 points

I've never done a second original either, only amended returns. I'd be concerned about the states' handling of second originals, so given the choice, I'd prepare amended returns. In cases where the amount of tax is small, and if it doesn't affect other calculations or items that may affect future returns (like some sort of carryover or basis), I'd discuss with the client and give them the choice whether to amend or not.3 points

I am also not haveing any problems with MWB and Taxbook Forum, but I access it with Google Chrome.3 points

Android Pay generates a second CC # so your actual number is not in the POS system. I'm going to start using it whenever possible. Restaurants in America are the biggest stumbling block. When I was in Canada recently all the wait staff brought a portable POS to the table so you can pay however you wish and not hand your card to someone who disappears with it. America is always behind the times on things like this, because short-term profits are God in America.3 points

In the last 6 months or so, the POS systems of Whole Foods, Sonic, Wendy's and Chipotle have been hacked. POS systems generally do not have good security. Shopping with cash is looking like the prudent way to go.3 points

Did you see that yahoo just announced that several years ago when their email database was hacked that every customers information was exposed which is 3 times the number that they had previously admitted to ! IT security experts are now saying that with hackers getting more aggressive and sophisticated that this situation is only going to continue to get worse !3 points

Probably it's real. The IRS has used Equifax for i.d. verification since 2011 or 2012, and so does the SSA. That's in the topic about e-services and PTIN renewals being affected by freezing credit because it stops these agencies from continuing through the process of identity verification.3 points

Filed a return last week. Today we get an updated (note: *not* "corrected") 1041 from a trust. All numbers are the same except for a new entry on Line 5. I checked; it makes a $91 difference in federal tax (did not check the state return yet). Can we still file a new "original" return (which would have to be on paper, I should think), or should we wait six weeks and amend? I have known for a long time that these particular trustees were incompetent bozos; looks like they picked a matching accountant. Sheesh.2 points

Thanks, all. My assistant is out next week (pre-arranged long ago) so we are concentrating on finishing up (and him printing!) all the big gnarly returns by end of day Friday. This one, if the client decides to act, can wait until after 10/15 at least. (Hey, by then my assistant will be back and *he* can do the printing!).2 points

Most of the POS kiosks I've seen in restaurants look and feel like they NEVER get washed when the table does. Greasy fingerprints and ketchup smears. Blech!2 points

Gah, I usually end up with the wait staff comes back too soon or too often, like after barely one bite and asks if everything is ok.2 points

I have only ever done one once in my lengthy career - that was just this April. I did it this time because it really needed to be done to fix a big problem a DIYer created.2 points

It's the way of the future and I love it. But is there a 'we need drink refills' button or a 'something's wrong with our food' button?2 points

So what, if their POS system with poor security is hacked ?2 points

Chilli's, Applebee's and Olive Garden do the same thing. There is a POS machine on the table and they expect you to use it (in my experience). If you ask for a check, they will point you to the POS machine. If you hand them a credit card, they will instruct you on how to use the POS machine to pay your check. Prints out the receipt right from the pos machine. Tom Modesto, CA2 points

The IRS signed a 7 million dollar, no bid contract with Equifax last week, to provide fraud prevention services to the Agency. The story comes from MSN Money Page if you want to look it up. REALLY? I just don't have words for how stupid this sounds. Perhaps the two will combine their databases and just make every American subject to ID theft for the rest of the world. OMG - this must be a joke. Yay! I'll have to add 'turn off your security software' to my recommended steps.1 point

UPDATE on my recent "unable to connect to server" issue for ATX 2016. Apparently, Norton released a security update within the last few days, which did not play nice with the 2016 software, so none of the fixes in the Knowledgebase or the forums works in this case. Eric (my original contact & Scott ( to whom it was escalated to) from ATX support had me up & running within a few minutes he accessed my computer. Also,, he put in a safeguard so 2017 will also be accessible. KUDOS to ATX support!!1 point

There is a button for "Call Server" that lights up a red light on your POS and alerts them that you want to see them. There are also games that can be played (for a fee) so you can hand it to a person who can't sit through a meal without electronic stimulation. Tom Modesto, CA1 point

If it turns out that there would be no change in the TP's 1040 with the filing of the Trust returns for past year, I would probably just file Trust returns from this point on and show the rental property as belonging to the Trust. If IRS got involved in a later year I would show "substance over form" and that there was confusion as to whether or not the asset was a Trust asset which was resolved during the current year. It has been my experience that IRS is not interested in "reinventing the wheel" if the bottom line tax situation would be the same.1 point

Both! Depending on which one is being looked at (fed or state). Which makes it way more confusing especially on a quick read while we're all trying to finish of the last stragglers.1 point

Clarity. I thought you were saying it was excluded when paid out, not when earned. I was in tax return mode.1 point

Has anyone else noticed this? For the comparison schedule to show Sch C, E, F, you get a popup saying you need ATX Advantage for this. But if you print the comparison schedule, it prints not only page 1 & 2 and Sch A, but also Sch C, E, F (without having Advantage). But this only works the first time. If you try to print this a 2nd time, it only prints page 1 & 2 and Sch A. Weird.1 point

Sorry, Catherine, I just now saw your post. But I see you found the answer. The Bailey decision more--or-less settled the issue. Eventually, even retired NC state employees will also pay state income tax on their pensions after all the "grandfathered" employees retire and then die off. Right now we are in the midst of a long changeover process. But you are correct. Your client will probably have a lower cost of living. Her state income tax may be less than the savings on her property taxes alone. Plus, there's tangible value derived simply by living in the "Variety Vacationland."1 point
