  3. Based on this status page for the IRS FIRE system, I'd say that e-filing of 1099s at this time is not available again until after Jan 8th. Whether using ATX, some other software, or online, don't they all ultimately go through the FIRE system or not? For example, Drake creates a file but I enter my own transmitter number and log in directly to the FIRE system and upload the file. With ATX software it's more seamless, but aren't they acting as the transmitter and still going through FIRE since they aren't going through MeF? https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/filing-information-returns-electronically-fire

  6. I read Kiplinger's Tax Letter every 2 weeks. They cover all areas including enforcement issues. Their lowest price is $38/yr and I renew for 2 years at $68. Also, every 3 weeks my barber gives me updates.

  9. There are brokers who do this for a living, such as Accounting Practice Sales Lori Newcomer, CPA, & Tim Price, CPA 888-553-1040 [email protected] But, some on this board can give you their personal experiences. Also, network through all your professional affiliations for contacts.

  10. Ah; sorry that I misunderstood. Once the FIRE system re-opens, you can file the 1099's, yes. Until then, you could still mail them in. And you can mail recipient copies out, as well.

  11. thank you Judy - I kinda thought not, but just trying to plan ahead if we can get these out or not. (Yes - the tax return was filed, with the promise that the 1099's would be issued, rather late than never.)

  12. I took this to mean the client's 2016 income tax return was e-filed in October, and now the client needs to issue 2016 1099-Misc forms. I think the question is can 2016 Forms 1099-Misc be e-filed right now, even though IRS is not taking individual tax returns electronically from Nov 18 - late Jan? I honestly don't know if they can or not, so I don't know why I am contributing here, except I have a weird need to know if the question was understood and answered.

  13. I recently subscribed to KPMG's Tax News Flash. It's way more than I need but I just skip to the relevant articles. Plus it's free. Long time reader of Dave & Mary Mellem's emails. I think you can subscribe by just emailing Mary at [email protected]. Forbes has some good tax writers like Tony Nitti.
