  1. What a s _ _ _hole question this is. I couldn't resist...sorry.

  2. I refused to click ok when that message came up a few times last season. It was my way of refusing to cooperate: "No, I paid good money for you to work, I'm not ok with this. Shut up."

  3. The only mailing I received from an individual tax client is a wedding invitation for her son....for March 24th on Staten Island, 232 miles away from me. They're just going to have to change that date!

  4. "But it has always worked before" "But X did theirs that way" "Really? To download and install, I need to click the 'Download & Install' button? Your instructions should be more clear!" -- Although I do somewhat understand. As I get older, I notice the things I "always" have done before, such as leave my keys in a certain spot, do not always happen. Can't explain it to myself as it must have been one of the kids, since they have moved out, moved in, moved out, moved in, moved out (current status). For those that "suffered" through this far in my message, today started off with an upset employer/customer. They have "employees" who are having trouble with a certain self prep tax program, as it is not accepting their one digit W2 control number. The employer is telling me the employees say the tax program requires a two digit control number... I used to be amused at being asked to provide free support for the software of others, but sometimes it is too much! (Sent the employer a snip from the IRS W2 instructions, pointing out the W2 is correct. Any issue with the tax prep software is something the employee needs to take up with that software vendor.)

  5. Add to the list the dreaded, "I just have a quick question."

  6. I don't dread the 'quick question' anymore, because one led me to being able to sell my house to their son without a broker, thereby saving a 6% sales commission.

  7. This fix appears to work once the program is closed and restarted after deleting the file.

  8. Hmmm, are you sure the IRS has accepted the returns or have they only been accepted by your software company? Official IRS filing starts 1-29 just wondering.

  10. If the new business interest expense limitation applies to rentals, there is an exception for small business with average gross receipts of $25 million or less, so I don't see how it could be a problem for most rental properties.

  11. I know nobody is busy, but since Form 1040 is still in draft, here's one: Church acquaintance needs 2016 return done and actually says: 1) For some reason, I couldn't get Turbo Tax to work. 2) It should be really simple. 3) The bank needs it for our refinance. 4) It's only illegal if you don't file, right? Not if you file and don't pay. That's ok, right? 5) It should be really simple.

  14. Just finished 1099s and the flood gates have opened for individual 1040s....Can't transmit until 1/9, of course, but already have several "W-2 only" clients wanting their returns done to beat the rush and have ready to send...Now I get to tell most of them that their refunds will be delayed until late Feb (EITC).

  17. Just because no Minnesota tax was withheld, does not mean the income is not taxable by Minnesota. Send it!

  18. When in doubt, send it out. Besides, the answer has to be yes.

  20. In ATX, the MD forms are not even ready yet. I take that back, apparently MD is ready as of this morning. Either that or I needed to run a forms update last night because I couldn't create the MD 502 efile last night.

  21. The IRS processes selected returns from big preparers in order to test their systems, so there are some lucky few who get to file early. It's call the HUB program.

  24. I have now discovered that if you don't click on okay when the box comes up and says the program has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close and instead click the red x in the top right corner that the program will not close and you can continue to work.
