  2. I can round up a couple cousins that will not only let you co-sign, but make you feel good about it. One is married to a guy who wears muscle shirts all year and I am thinking about getting him sleeves for Thanksgiving. Or barbells. C'mon, Bart. We are twins.

  3. We each must use whatever the software provides us, but I give Drake a huge edge on this feature (as well as many others). I write a macro for the 8283 one time, then any time I want to produce the form, its runs with a single keystroke. Once the macro is written, I just modify the name and address info for the next one, so I wind up with a separate macro for Goodwill, a different one for KF, another one for Community Foundation, etc. This helps considerably because I see Goodwill receipts from 4 or 5 different locations. I have to keep a cross reference for the macros, but that's just a matter of filling in cells in a spreadsheet and printing it out each time it's updated. I'd like to buy everything from my clients for what it's actually worth and sell it back to them for what they think it's worth. Wish there was a macro or master form to set THAT process into motion.

  4. I am still digging my way out from under work, plus the managing of my parents' estates. But I have a reservation in Gatlinburg, which I think gets me to within driving distance (not as short a distance as I would like, but doable) so I am planning to be there if at all possible.

  9. That is exactly what I told my kids (well 24 years) when I got home after figuring out the 1% / 99% allocation deal. It was made sooooo much worse because ATX wouldn't allow zeros in column f of 8962 and it took me forever to realize that was the hold up. And when the clients picked up, they really had no idea what I saved them. Yes, I made it very clear. $8,778. It's burned on my brain. Did the returns three ways and gave them copies of all. They didn't like the $475 charge for two returns. Let me tell you, I didn't either. They came in two days ago to pay me (yes, I extended credit after all that). They were all smiles and appreciative. Yes, there was hugging that did not end in death. I feel better about it. But HOLY ACA H*LL.

  10. Hello. Sorry to be a dunderbrain, but are we really having a 'gathering' this summer, or is that a long-standing joke? OR . . . is it invitation only, which would be completely understandable. I don't want to show up and end up as fertilizer. Cheers!

  11. Classic example of when to use a 3115 to correct the depreciation expense claimed. Since this will increase tax due,I believe you still get a 4 year spread forward to pay any additional tax.

  12. I'm a fan of macros/scripts. I have AutoHotkey running all the time and have used it for macros in ATX, but if I had 4 or 5 different locations for Goodwill, I would still lump them into one Goodwill donation. Our rules is if there are more than 5 donees, the 5th one is listed as a donee "& others". Our reasoning is if it doesn't change the tax and it would survive an audit, it's a waste of time to do.

  13. I don't use ATX. I have a check box to pro forma to next year. So, the clients that take in boxes and bags of stuff each month, have 12 forms that roll over for me. Very little typing after that first year. And, I can duplicate forms in the current year, a huge help if they always give to Goodwill or whichever charity. I probably have a "master form" method, but the check-the-box method makes it really fast for me. I still need to charge more, due to "education" time. This year EVERY client received a FMV Guide.

  14. I know isn't it great (eye rolling snark) if my taxpayer underestimated their income for 2017, got an advanced premium credit of 12K for their HI and then get to deduct it all on their tax return saving themselves from paying back the APTC of $11644.00 that they didn't qualify for in the first place , as their income was too high. I can take it above the line on 1040 but if I check the box to not take the PTC on 8962 ATX will not let me Efile.

  15. In master forms I added 4 records for a total of 5 and customized each record as shown below. You have to restore the FMV field when you're done, but that was the only way I could get the 'Were goods or services exchanged...' question to appear. I guess the programmers think they're doing us a favor by making parts of the forms hidden until we make entries, but I hate it!

  16. I couldn't buy the amount of clothing my clients give away every year. And if my "Misc Household" stuff was worth what they are claiming, I'd KEEP it. Oh how I wish this was gone. Love the "H8 8283 Club!"

  17. Welcome to the H8 8283 club. One of the biggest PIA's in prepping TR's. This was brought up her about a month ago. Some preparers including myself will lump several of the receipts from the same institution together. If the IRS wanted to crack down on this, they would probably throw out 90% of the claims. I have been in some of the thrift stores and the selling prices are much lower than most people are claiming.

  18. This has been going on for days, and the clients are not my favorite to begin with......... and now I will lose any money I hoped to make on this return. I have filled out everything in pub 974 at least twice and I am ready to throw in the towel !!! I don't think the iterative method can be used as this is way more than a $1.00 difference. Back to clawing my eyes out!

  19. Pub 974 is a real bear; just tried to skim it. Not only is the iterative Method pages long, but the Simplified Method is not even close to being simple or short.

  20. The IRS only checks that last name on the return (only the first 4 letters actually) so you can put any first name on a return that you want. I'm guessing return was filed under mom's Social Security number and last name but daughters first name. Sounds like a horrible preparer.

  21. Just for curiosity, I would ask to see a copy of the return in question. The preparer could of put in "Karen's" name instead of her mom's. He could also have entered the father as the deceased. The combination of the two errors would have produced the check. Another possibility, Karen signed the return as a fiduciary on form 56.

  22. You guys are the best. It is not my problem and my client knows that. I haven't been asked to solve it nor will I offer to. Not unless I'm hired. She called because her stepdad received a paper check at his address with the wrong name on it (not "in care of") and the preparer was rather rude to her. He said "I've done your parent's taxes for 25 years and never had a problem until now. Just cash the damn check and give him the money. It's not like it's income to you." She was offended. So was I. That's not how I do business. I've known the family for a very long time, long enough that I went to the Mom's funeral last year. There may be snakes but not the stepdad. And not the daughter. One of the reasons I follow this board is to see what you all see in your offices. It's always helped me to read about some crazy thing you've never had happen. I learn from that. From you. For me - this was one of those things. Take a break but don't go away. I appreciate all of you.

  23. Sorry, cain't make it. That's family reunion season and several relatives in dire straits are depending on me to co-sign their bank note renewals. Too, although I am allowed to leave the state, I don't like to get much further away from home than Little Rock. Good luck with your barbecue'n and stuff.

  24. I'll be having a hip replaced this summer, and maybe spinal surgery, too. Doctors are still arguing about the source of my pain and weakness. Have already had x-rays, an MRI, blood work, etc. Rheumatologist, who was holding out for spinal stenosis, went to a conference and changed his mind to hip. But internist, who agreed with the orthopedic surgeon re hip, is now concerned about the source of weakness on my left side, so he's sending me to a spine specialist next week. I'm concerned about the source of PAIN on my left side. If I have a hip replaced and still hurt, I will not be a happy camper. At least one hip needs to be replaced soon, but maybe there is something I need done first. Anyway, I won't be at Rita's in TN nor at Appalachia Service Project in TN, KY, WV, VA, or NC, and might miss hubby's family reunion on the Cape. I didn't sign up for the CCH User Conference at the Fountainebleau in Miami Beach, because I don't think I'll be doing a log of walking this fall. Luckily, I'm pretty comfortable sitting (especially on a heating pad) so can prepare taxes and do anything else at my computer. I look forward to the live stream from Rita's back forty!
