  1. One "common" issue, with printing, is the Windows Registry containing/retaining invalid printer information. There may be some sort of printer clean up tool (I have no idea), as I manually clean up the printer section from time to time. For most, uninstalling ALL printers, then reinstalling just the printer(s) you are currently using, will get things going again.

  3. Just off the top of my head because I think I've only had one of these: Isn't box 10 free of federal tax already and the 2441 is just showing the IRS that you used it for child care? You don't get a credit when the money was already tax free? I could be completely wrong. The one I had of these - the ex claimed 100% of the child care because the child lived with her so he was sort of screwed and got mad at me. Again, it's been a few years so it could be wrong.

  4. Just got done with ATX support. They said the latest ATX update will happen in 2 days and it will include the program automatically flowing the QBI info from the K-1 schedule into the 199A worksheet. Fingers crossed this is true.

  5. The manual method is to use the Windows registry editor's search/find function. Some of the places to look (directly): \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\PrinterPorts \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers If you delete a bit of printer information you need, you can reinstall the printer. The issue is printer software not having a complete proper uninstall. (For instance, while searching for the common registry locations, I found remnants of Microsoft XPS printer, which I never use and had already uninstalled.)

  6. Yes, Abby is correct. One child can have zero expenses, as long as she/he is qualifying: from 2441 instructions To qualify for the credit, you must have one or more qualifying persons. You should show the expenses for each child in column (c) of line 2. However, it is possible a qualifying child could have no expenses and a second child could have expenses exceeding $3,000. You should list -0- for the one child and the actual amount for the second child. The $6,000 limit would still be used to compute your credit unless you have already excluded or deducted, in Part III, certain dependent care benefits paid to you (or on your behalf) by your employer. AND above I meant wages on line 7

  7. I don't think that's true. I always list all qualifying children whether any care was paid for them or not. Never had a problem.

  8. For insurance purposes, I don't think it matter whether the child(!) is your dependent or not. I don't know why she is putting him down as a dependent for the Marketplace, but she can consider him a dependent for insurance purposes until he is 27 now. If he is making too much for marketplace insurance, can she carry him on her policy at work?

  9. $27,500 is only 228% of the poverty rate. I think you'll be ok if you allocate the numbers on the 1095-A to the kid. I had to do it last year with a mom and a [No Longer] dependent. Well, I had to allocate 1% of the credit received to the mom and 99% to the kid because of something wonky with ATX, but I was able to allocate 100% of the other columns to kid. It was torture, and I sat here for hours reading the Instructions to 8962. There's a thread in the ACA Forum. Hope this helps. As far as mom being covered by ER, that's how my situation and yours are different, my mom had Marketplace insurance, so I may be missing something painfully obvious.

  10. Be sure to complete the 2441. The box 10 amount goes on the second page and, as others have said, nets out of the eligible expenses. IF you don't show the expenses on the 2441, then the box 10 amount is added to wages on line 10. Sometimes people don't give you the daycare expenses saying. "I used dependent care benefit for that" Yes they did, but it needs to be reported on the return.

  11. Quite frankly Lynn I get soooooooooooooo exasperated by these folks like her I really am lost for words. Her excuse "I did it for financial reasons". This after I clearly explained she could NOT carry sonny as a dependent ANY LONGER ! She had already slipped by a year. I am going to direct her back to the exchange to see if there is any way to rectify this mess. There's this also to consider. If a dependent their combined family income will exceed $ 80,000 plus. Further how does play out as she is company insured. It is no wonder the hair on the rear of my head grows less each tax season !

  12. True! The odds of a scammer going to a preparer who finds this group must be small, but still possible.

  13. cbslee - get well soon! That screeching sound when I ask for a year end brokerage account 1099 "Tax form", and instead get 100 pages of various interim statements.

  14. One other possibility, creation of W -2s is a favorite tool of scammers.

  15. If same FEIN, watch for / handle over withholding of SS. Could be (off the top of my head): Different SEIN. Employee is subject to more than one state tax jurisdiction, or I suppose, structure change only requiring new SEIN. Multiple local taxes, too many to fit on one W2 (think Ohio). Should only have one Federal and State information. Same "company", different SEIN (multi state liability). Third Party Sick Pay Change in payroll processor (a paid processor is not going to want to prepare any report with pay information they did not control) Change in payroll software, failing to merge the data.

  16. Yes, I have seen where a company changes payroll company during the year, and employees get two W-2's, I would ask the employee to double check his wages are correct, sometimes is lack of communication.

  18. What Jack and Hahn (and others) said. Get the documentation NOW. Sure, send it in now (likely they won't notice it). Heck, I'd even write the letter now (or at least make notes, as you presented for us here), while it's all fresh in your mind. When (not if) the cp2000 shows up, you'll have everything for rebuttal.

  20. Taxpayer is wrong that amount was withheld on a after-tax basis. It is pre-tax (including FICA). If she has two or more children in care, she is allowed $3k per child on the 2441, $6k for two. Since she already received $5k tax free, she can claim the credit for the excess $1k. If she only has one child in care, no credit.
