  2. TAS has issued a schematic diagram, resembling the London Underground Maps, that traces the various paths the tax return takes, starting with pre-preparation and then through the IRS system of screening, processing, refunds, collections, appeals, litigation and alternatives. Although. I think the intentions were good, designed to help the taxpayers understand the complexity of how their return is handle, I doubt that many would take the time to work their way through any of the labrynthine schematics, or that any would even be interested. On the other hand, it might help su explain to clients what is happening with their return. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p5341.pdf

  3. Or since a rental was involved, do they have a partnership and would a 754 election be required?

  4. I am simply wondering if since the husband owned 3/4 of the house if the house is inherited 3/4 of the depreciated value or does the widow inherit it at the stepped up market value which is of course much higher? This is a reminder of why I am considering folding the tent.

  5. Tax Pro Today has an article about 2019 Tax Software enhancements https://www.taxprotoday.com/news/the-2019-tax-prep-software-comparison-guide?feed=00000158-3f5d-dcbd-abf8-ff7f12270000 Curiously Wolters Kluwer does not have any mention of ATX ?

  6. Before doing any math, I would want to know for certainty that the widow actually owned 1/4 share. How was the sales contract made out? Were any of the wife/widow's funds used? How is the property titled? Was the property retitled into both names when they got married, (showing intent to share ownership)?

  7. I regularly make estimated payments. Because my income comes in irregularly I have for years attached a 2210 explaining this. No problem until this year. The PPS rep waived the entire thing explaining that the 2018 tax changes were largely the reason. The Service appeared to me to have completely ignored the 2210 I sent noting I had incorrectly computed the form and simply dividing my total income by four. Go figure.

  8. It comes into play for a LOT of things. For instance, I still have not gotten back on e-Services, because I would have to unfreeze my report(s) for the time it takes for them to identify me via third-party information. (Well, that and the fact that e-Services says my cell phone is not in my name when AT&T says it is in my name; maybe tied in with the freeze, after all.) There are a lot of places that check credit reports without extending you credit, just for identification purposes. If I really want whatever it is, I ask them which company they use. The guy behind the desk never knows. If it's biz hours and he can ask corporate, I unfreeze that one until approved. Had to do that to add my kid on our cell plan. It's a real pain. One year a tax return was filed with my SSN, so I had to print and stand in line at the PO. Last year I was able to e-file again. You never know when you'll be hit with fallout.

  9. ATX sells an add-on for this called PaperlessPlus, but I've always been happy scanning/printing PDFs to client folders, since 2003.

  10. You can get IRS transcripts quite a ways back. I recently downloaded 2009-2017 for a self-preparer who hadn't been carrying forward his NOL. Still waiting for the IRS to get around to processing this. It's been over 6 months.
