  1. One of the advantages of winding down, you can fire anyone you want and not feel bad about it.

  2. I've stayed virtual, so if they drop off or mail/ship unopened envelopes, at least I can use my letter opener and rip them all open and toss envelopes in my recycle bin and flatten out their documents in a mad flurry, all unobserved. Thank goodness, I do have lots who use my portal. I guess that's one of my criteria for firing/selling clients. I remember a strange old lady at HRB years ago that reported me to our manager and everyone in ear-shot in the office and probably to regional/national supervisors/whatever saying I shredded her tax papers! I opened each envelope and put envelopes in my wastebasket under my desk. All documents remained in her sight ON my desk. Our office shredder was in another room, so if I were going to shred anything, I'd save it in a pile until that client was done.

  3. I'm still trying to dig a pigmy. At least we know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.

  4. Years ago I intentionally began using mail and night drop to encourage my clients to leave their info during off-hours. Eventually email and text accelerated that process. The intent was always to keep my clients out of my office so I could get some work done. But I do miss one aspect of the personal interaction. As we sat there talking about kids, church, politics, etc, I’d be casually pulling all the boilerplate, empty envelopes, and pages “intentionally left blank” out of their stack and shoving it into the shredder. Watching the expression on their faces while that shredder ground away was always priceless.

  5. It's the time you spend biting your tongue while they slowly open all the envelopes. I even hand them my envelope opener. My fuse is getting short.

  6. It bothers me too because I used to always work with a CD in the drive. And, yes, I do still have a CD drive).

  8. Don't forget the dang sticky notes. Sorry, you don't need to write me a note that your W2 is a W2!

  9. There is a difference between assisted living, residential care with medical assistance, residential care with extensive medical assistance (memory unit, etc.), and skilled nursing care required around the clock, as for someone in a coma. The last is considered 100% medical.

  10. I've added disposal fees, staple removal fees, and more. Some clients learn & clean up their acts. Others just pay. Either way, I figure it's a win. Try it! If you don't have an easy way to burn it all, as does mcb39.

  12. Except it's not printing in the print manager. Perhaps a print preview in print manager will make it print.

  13. ATX has a service you can pay for to restore efiled returns if you've lost you database and don't have any backups. ATX backs up a return every time you close it, so if you backed up those backups you can restore them.

  14. Did you try print page? You do that while on the page you want printed. The trick is to change your default printer to PDF. While in Return Manager, go to Returns menu and choose Change Printer.

  15. I can't work anymore with music, even the elevator music. Back in my younger days, I could work statistics problems, long hand on paper while cranking up the rock music.

  16. I always preferred instrumental music during crunch time. Mike Oldfield and Two Siberians were my go to.

  18. Especially since their pile stapled together with the W2 note also contains a 1099-INT and 1098 and maybe their car tax receipt.

  19. Absolutely not true. I use Pro and have one that paid full price. If I don't enter amount on 1095A w/s for SLCSP that I had to look up, no 8962.

  20. I don't think so. I just amended 2022 and 2023 returns for client that had 1095A paying full price. The previous preparer did not look up SLCSP to give them the credit. IRS isn't going to be looking up info that's not on 1095A to see if there should be a credit.
